It’s so easy to get caught up in the tale of the top earners — that 5 percent of the population who pay 59 percent of all federal income taxes but earn only 32 percent of the income.

But what about the 45 percent or so of our fellow citizens who pay zero? Shouldn’t they share the, uh, “credit,” too?

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but aren’t all these “roads we built” and “schools we paid for” and the cops and firefighters, etc. — aren’t they available for use by the rich and poor alike? Isn’t the illegal immigrant headed to pick up a government-subsidized rent voucher driving on the very same roads as the hardest-working plumber or most successful doctor?
