(CBS News) Sources say investigators have found key evidence in dumpsters and trash bins outside of James Holmes' apartment, including a shipping label from an internet ammunition store called BulkAmmo.com.
Investigators also tell CBS News they have recovered a surveillance video of James Holmes picking up approximately 150 pounds of ammunition at a Federal Express outlet in Colorado.
They've interviewed a UPS driver who says Holmes had 90 packages delivered to his workplace on the University of Colorado medical campus.
And sources say over the past several months, Holmes spent about $15,000 as he was putting together his deadly arsenal -- guns, chemicals, explosives, and ammunition.
"Through the Internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition, more than 3,000 rounds of. 223 ammunition for the assault rifle, 3,000 rounds of .40 caliber ammunition for the two Glocks in his possession and 300 rounds for the 12 gauge shotgun."
Holmes did most his shopping on Internet sites. And he was clearly in a hurry.
A receipt from TacticalGear.com shows on July 2 -- two-and-a-half weeks before the shootings -- Holmes purchased a bulletproof vest and other equipment. He paid extra to have it shipped by 2nd-day air.

Indeed, I have verified the same with more than one fireman. I had considerably more guns and ammunition than this guy(back before the boating accident!)which is why I was asking. Even packed in ammo cans it won’t “explode” in a fire like TV and movies portray.

Foremost, my prayers go out to those innocent people who were killed or wounded by this criminal.
I fear that beyond the tragedy of this incident, the left will try to do what Fast and Furious was unable to do.....eliminate the Second Amendment.
If you live in Wisconsin, don’t think that only internet ammunition purchases are tracked. I am a veteran, spent my career in law enforcement, was a member of the SWAT team and was also trained and worked as a bomb tech. My faith is the guiding principle in my life so I guess you could say that I fit the profile of a person “Big Sis” would consider a person of interest. She probably has copies of every ammunition purchase I have ever made and monitors my computer and phone with regularity.
I only share this because in Wisconsin, at least where I purchase ammunition, I am required to produce my Photo Driver’s License (although I don’t need any ID to vote...go figure) and the clerk punches a number from my license into her computer beside the register.
I’d be curious to know if other states have the same mandate for ammunition purchasers.

I read a while ago (I think it was before the '08 elections) that in Alaska people were buying ammo by the pallet load straight off the freight docks.
Same thing exactly happened a few years ago in Australia....leading to total gun confiscation and control.

THE $500 million national gun buy-back scheme has failed, Queensland's foremost police weapons expert says.
Inspector John McCoomb says gun laws introduced after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre have sent the trade underground.
"Once they're on the black market, they're there for anyone to buy," he said.
He said that "with the right contacts", it was still possible to buy semi-automatic weapons like the Armalite (AR-10) rifle Martin Bryant used in the massacre. Inspector McCoomb, who heads the Weapons Licensing Branch, said Australians had handed in only a fraction of the weapons in the community.
So far, just over 643,000 guns had been surrendered nationally, about 131,000 of them in Queensland. It was impossible to calculate the number of guns in Australia but 643,000 was a fraction of just two brands of now-illegal guns in the country. "About 800,000 (semi-automatic and automatic) SKK and SKS weapons came in from China back in the 1980s as part of a trade deal between the Australian and Chinese governments," Insp McCoomb said. "And it was estimated that there were 1.2million semi- automatic Ruger 1022s in the country.
"That's about 2million firearms of just two types in the country."
Insp McCoomb said police realised there were abundant illegal firearms for people to commit public atrocities.
On November 1 last year, gang members fired a hail of bullets at a Sydney police station using high-powered 9mm automatics or semi-automatics. Five police were inside. This barrage of shots in a city street was exactly the sort of scenario the buy-back was supposed to stop...

While probably true, the left already has their narrative "framed", with plenty of innocent bodies to dance on. This is perfect to keep "Fast and Furious" on ice for years, while providing a month's worth of Sunday talk show materials. Plenty of people in the government now know every moment of his life, as opposed to the president's life, which is the greatest secret of the universe. They spilled everything about Joe the Plumber overnight like it was no big deal.
This is another chance to manage the situation for their political advantage. I'm sure tomorrow we'll find out somehow it was Bush's fault.
Meanwhile, we'll see wall-to-wall coverage of hearings in the senate, which they can control. But the bottom line for us peasants in flyover country is the same as for Flight 93: die while trying to take the nutjob out, after you've been disarmed, or die cowering after you've been disarmed. In both cases, by some odd coincidence, the same two keywords pop up, "die", and "disarmed".

I noticed that the site, bulkammo.com didn’t carry one of my favorite calibers in lots over 200 rounds, and then not surplus ammo or remanufactured surplus components, although there are both out there. How long has that site been going, and who owns them. Their prices didn’t seem great, either.
If they do draw a connection to OWS Black Bloc, you can bet your bottom dollar it’ll be hidden by the media as long as possible.

bulkammo.com has been around only a couple of years. They get good marks for service, and prices. Their 5.56 price is comparable to targetsportusa, however, BA isn’t offering free shipping; TSU is saving me a few bucks.

gusty, I am considering a “red dot” holographic sight. Supposedly where the red dot is the bullet will strike. You also keep your field of view wide open (which is why I prefer iron sights).
