If It's So Easy to Run a Business on Leftist Principles, Why Don't Leftists Do It?

Our nation is saddled with a tiny cadre of Leftists - who unfortunately hold many key positions both inside and outside of government. These Leftists assert with great - though completely unfounded - authority that they know best how private businesses should do their thing.
Leftists think they know exactly how every little facet of the giant, endlessly faceted private economy works, which is remarkable, considering their enormous disdain for it.
President Barack Obama in his first autobiography described his few scant months spent doing actual (private sector) work thus:
“Like (I was) a spy behind enemy lines....”
And famously, recently uttered the unbelievable:
“If you’ve got a business - you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

How would you tell it? ‘The family’ voted on that, too. We voted which men were the best, and these men were sentenced to work overtime each night for the next six months. Overtime without pay - because you weren’t paid by time and you weren’t paid by work, only by need.
“Do I have to tell you what happened after that - and into what sort of creatures we all started turning, we who had once been humans? We began to hide whatever ability we had, to slow down and watch like hawks that we never worked any faster or better than the next fellow. What else could we do, when we knew that if we did our best for ‘the family,’ it’s not thanks or rewards that we’d get, but punishment? We knew that for every stinker who’d ruin a batch of motors and cost the company money - either through his sloppiness, because he didn’t have to care, or through plain incompetence - it’s we who’d have to pay with our nights and our Sundays. So we did our best to be no good.
“There was one young boy who started out, full of fire for the noble ideal, a bright kid without any schooling, but with a wonderful head on his shoulders. The first year, he figured out a work process that saved us thousands of man-hours. He gave it to ‘the family,’ didn’t ask anything for it, either, couldn’t ask, but that was all right with him. It was for the ideal, he said. But when he found himself voted as one of our ablest and sentenced to night work, because we hadn’t gotten enough from him, he shut his mouth and his brain. You can bet he didn’t come up with any ideas, the second year.
“What was it they’d always told us about the vicious competition of the profit system, where men had to compete for who’d do a better job than his fellows? Vicious, wasn’t it? Well, they should have seen what it was like when we all had to compete with one another for who’d do the worst job possible. There’s no surer way to destroy a man than to force him into a spot where he has to aim at not doing his best, where he has to struggle to do a bad job, day after day. That will finish him quicker than drink or idleness or pulling stick-ups for a living. But there was nothing else for us to do except to fake unfitness. The one accusation we feared was to be suspected of ability. Ability was like a mortgage on you that you could never pay off. And what was there to work for? You knew that your basic pittance would be given to you anyway, whether you worked or not - your ‘housing and feeding allowance,’ it was called - and above that pittance, you had no chance to get anything, no matter how hard you tried. You couldn’t count on buying a new suit of clothes next year - they might give you a ‘clothing allowance’ or they might not, according to whether nobody broke a leg, needed an operation or gave birth to more babies. And if there wasn’t enough money for new suits for everybody, then you couldn’t get yours, either.
I wouldn’t give them the credit for having the courage to steal from anyone. They elect other people to do it that have the legal monopoly on the use of force; force that, if you resist, becomes overwhelming and deadly in short order, all while the takers hide behind the “social contract”.
I despise these people, but not as much as I despise the people that aren’t the takers, but those who are deriving their sense of self-righteousness for “caring” by supporting policies of theft from their fellow American.

You can see the legacy of this Communist philosophy today when you eat at many restaurants in Beijing. They practically make you serve yourself.
Western standards of customer service haven't really taken hold in much of China yet, for all their fervent embrace of capitalism at the small- and medium-sized business level.
Agreed. Ben and Jerry’s and Progressive Insurance need to turn their day-to-day decision making over to Worker Committees.

Depending on your definitions, about 60% of new businesses never turn a profit. It looks like the lazy leftist losers are out there - temporarily.

If you look at many liberal businesses, you will find businesses that depend on government regulation for their existence. I was told by a professor in a university public health program that I should support government regulations because they set up jobs for inspectors, systems providers, and other compliance people—these were the jobs occupied by all the graduates of the program. Of course, if there are no private businesses upon which to enforce regulations...
I guess you could call Ben & Jerries ice cream company a liberal business. They sell a non-essential, relatively low cost luxury product that has sold well due to quality and variety. However, when the company tried to hire a new top executive on a liberal salary, they found few applicants. Top execs might often vote liberal but they sure are greedy when it comes to their own pay.
A number of finance industry businesses headquartered in NYC are populated with liberal employees but are ruthlessly conservative in operating principles. It helps if your public image is “compassionate” when you are out to bleed every possible dime out of every last person on the planet.
Many of the post-microcomputer revolution technology companies have liberal founders and management. They don’t face the regulatory burden of old-technology companies like steel mills, mines, transportation companies, chemical or oil refineries, etc. When your income stream is strong, it is easy to be arrogant about politics.

They do! They’re called Google, Progressive Insurance, et al (Apple, MS?).....I’m sure there are dozens of more specific examples. Oh! Solyndra, GM (Volt, etc.).....
The delusion that organizing a successful business is a light and trivial matter, and that therefore businessmen are parasites, has been rampant on the left since at least Marx.
Lenin got a dose of reality when his first attempt at restructuring the Russian economy along Communist lines was a complete failure — hence the New Economic Policy, which worked better as it had capitalist features, but was still disastrous, as it didn’t have enough. (And this leaves side the other, related delusion that one can be smarter than a reasonably well-functioning market, which is shared by leftists and the “wizards of smart” on Wall Street who run up multi-billion dollar trading losses.)
