Worker on nuclear sub set fire so he could leave early, Navy says

A civilian laborer set a fire that caused $400 million in damage to a nuclear-powered submarine because he had anxiety and wanted to get out of work early, Navy investigators said Monday.

Casey James Fury, 24, of Portsmouth, N.H., faces up to life in prison if convicted of two counts of arson in the fire aboard the USS Miami attack submarine while it was in dry dock May 23 and a second blaze outside the sub on June 16.

Fury was taking medications for anxiety and depression and told investigators he set the fires so he could get out of work, according a seven-page affidavit filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Portland.

It’s going to be repaired.

Oh, I heard they said they were not going to repair it initially—costs too much and it is not a new sub.

It’s amazing that we live in a world where a single person can make such a colossal screw-up. A trader blows five billion dollars, a guy almost wipes out a French bank, a captain grounds a billion dollar ship, a single person does 1/2 billion of damage to a sub, etc.

I’ve worked for companies where it took the combined efforts of dozens of managers over years to screw up at those levels - but we’ve become much more efficient since then :)

Actually that was a thought provoking thought. It doesn't take much to create huge damage today, does it?

I did work for Social Dynamics, 335 Newbury St, Mass. when they were under contact to review the state proposals for programs for the retarded, so I am somewhat familiar with issues regarding care for the retarded, Oopsie - make that “Developmentally Challenged”).

Have you considered that nearly all such conditions now have ‘constituencies’? Allowing government to do “charity” 9using the word as the Founders so did) is both a violation of the Constitution and has boosted the cost of care for such people and their families?

That caring, compassionate government trough feeder delivers “help” at some four times the cost of non-governmental charities?

As for my having a “narcissim complex”, do I post like a Libtard, and am I a HalfRican lke Obama? Didn’t think so!

But, you are totally correct about the Trough Feeders drooling far more than they normally do whenever the concept of “Thought Crime” comes up for discussion.

PS According to the wet dreams of the Trough Feeders, being a FReeper is proof positive of clear and unambiguous need for their “intervention”.

PPS I merely said that those who are less than stable must not be allowed in sensitive areas where their abnormality could cause immense damage. That sub fire is proof of the accuracy of my position. There are many areas in society where our fellow Americans can find productive work without endangering others either physically or financially.

To close on a positive note, genetic advances hopefully will prevent the many genetic damage caused “diseases”.

You can back-track all you want, but your original post without bringing in all the government “trough feeders” argument, and “charity” arguments paints a much different picture of your views on the subject. Your first post was quite candid, and your second post brings in subjects that have nothing to do with your original statements.

Also, I’m unsure of where in my post I supposedly mentioned “trough feeders” drooling at “thought crimes” - thus, what are you proposing that you agree with me about? I don’t believe I said any such thing. Where did I mention “trough feeders” ANYWHERE in my post to you? Where did I mention “welfare” of any sort? It’s the attitude you displayed in your post, the total disregard for people with very real conditions, not to mention your delivery.

As for genetic advances in medicine being able to fix “genetic damage” caused “diseases” - that’s just a drawn out way to talk about Eugenics without mentioning that word. Many problems such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD are NOT genetic conditions, and are a direct result of environmental pressures.

Basically, I don’t think there’s anything you can say that will detract from your original statements about “drugged nutters”, “retards” and “all the other detritus on two feet”. It makes your POV pretty damn obvious - bringing in other arguments, and your apparent “experience” working with “retards” and government programs doesn’t make what you said any less ignorant, and despicable, IMHO.

Incidentally, I agree with the FACT that not everyone is a good candidate for all jobs. The whole idea of “equality” for everyone is a joke. Someone with a low-IQ can’t possibly be a rocket scientist, for instance. A woman who wishes to be a firefighter should be required to pass EXACTLY the same tests as the fellow male applicants with no “special considerations” as the people counting on you are depending upon your ability to do your job effectively. If you’re working on a nuclear sub I’d understand the requirements to be much more strict than if you’re painting a truck, for instance. THAT I understand, but that’s NOT what you said, nor how you said it.

Thank you for injecting some common sense into this thread. Just because someone is taking medication for depression, or anxiety does not mean they are “drugged nutters”. I appreciate your enlightening folks on this topic in regards to security clearances, etc... With all of the returning service members who are having a hard time dealing with PTSD, Depression and Anxiety and need meds to help them re-adjust you’d think people would be more educated about the true causes, and results of said conditions. It’s sad that they are not.

There was no “back tracking” in what I wrote, though you seem to see it. I seem to have offended your sense of “PS SPEEK” by using “Retard” and “drugged nutter”. Are you arare the Constitution really does not protect you if you want to feel “offended”?

As for the misfortune of those whom potluck in the meiotic dance was less than desired, I am the observer, not the source.

Nothing in your apparently angry responses directly addresses the issuer I raised - why was a “person with mental challenges” on pharmaceuticals as well - WHY was that person allowed on a nuclear sub?

Citizens who will pay the $400,000,000 bill for that act of political correctness want to know.
