Cinemas like the one in Colorado where the shooting took place last week are closely regulated in virtually every respect but one.
Federal law requires large theaters to have wheelchair seating, ramps as well as stairs, and bathrooms that are accessible to the disabled. Fire codes limit audience size. Emergency fire exits must be illuminated.
We have a ratings system to protect children from nudity or offensive language. Indeed, on that horrific night in the theater last week, only one major element wasnt regulated: the guns and ammunition used to massacre viewers.
As a nation, we regulate fire exits, but not 100-round magazines. We shield youngsters in cinemas from violence but only if its on the screen.
Almost a week after the cinema shooting, we can also be sure what wont happen: serious gun control.

The NYT has gone from Mercedes class to Yugo class.
Does anyone actually read - and believe - these loons anymore?
I’m fat because of spoons.
The theater has sprinklers and fire extinguishers.
They couldn’t provide one lousy armed guard. So why not let patrons take care of themselves.
This is completely crap! There was gun control in place! The city of Aurora has gun control in place as well as the theater itself. No guns were allowed. Where do they find these rocks to put behind a computer and write this BS?
Are all NY city residents this provincial and ignorant, to think that the orange-haired, demon-possessed murderer would have obeyed laws not to bring guns in the theatre?
I thought all the fire exit doors had an alarm if opened.
Where is the discussion about that. Was there one, Did it work, or did he disable it?
Leftists are consumed with people’s safety when it comes to guns, but couldn’t care less about their financial safety (Taxes, Socialism), safety from homosexual predators (Boy Scouts), safety in the womb (Abortion) and National Security (gut the Military).
If only there had been a “No Guns” sign on the fire door Holmes brought his guns in through.
No sign, and 12 people paid with their lives.
Sigh.
AHHHHHHH, but they WERE regulated; the perp was shooting in a GUN FREE ZONE!
Maybe we should regulate the news industry to protect people from overzealous newscasts that incorrectly and repeatedly link a minority group to violence?
Or maybe we should regulate the news industry to protect the people from doctored audio of 911 calls that make an innocent hispanic look like a racist?
We need sayfer boolets.
The very people who would take away guns often own fire extinguishers. It’s fun to ask such folks “What are you afraid of? Why are you living in fear?”
NY Times Headline:
Govt to ban all matches, lighters, magnifying glasses and lightning.
Not true - the oft-cited city ordinances have no meaning since the state has fully occupied the firearms regulation laws to the exclusion of any previously-enacted city ordinance. This applies everywhere in CO except for Denver which has special rules as a "Home Rule" city. An example of a difference in Denver would be that open carry is allowed everywhere in CO except for Denver.
Maybe instead of saying how much you do regulate, you should pause and ask why so many things are regulated.
UNsaid is the fact that if someone, anyone! had been carrying, the evening might have been very different for the “joker”.
The column is an interesting read, for what it reveals of the gun control mindset. His proposals for changes in the law all have one thing in common: none of them would have stopped Holmes. It’s a blatant example of a liberal following the Rahm Rule: never let a crisis go to waste. Exploit the victims and their grieving families before the funeral services have even been held, in order to advance the anti-gun jihad.
And they have the nerve to call themselves “reasonable”.
It is clear the Emergency Exit were not Alarmed.
Horse muffins! Idiots like Nicholas here need to apologize to the victims who were shot because of gun regulations like fish in a barrel.
