US White House spokesman Jay Carney refused to state the US position on the location of Israel’s capital during a press briefing, Thursday, despite several requests for clarification from a pair of reporters.

The exchange, caught on video and uploaded to YouTube, quickly made the cyberspace rounds as the latest example of world bodies’ refusal to name Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

In the video, a female reporter asks about the administration’s position on the capital of Israel, as several other reporters lightly chuckle.

“I haven’t gotten that question in a while,” Carney responds. “Our position has not changed.”

Carney tries to move on to another question but is hounded by the reporter and a man sitting next to her to expound on the position and whether the capital is Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.

“You know our position,” responds Carney.

For years our country tried to act like Taiwan was the Real China, when events had obviously overridden that assertion.
We got past that, and luckily still have Taiwan as an independent State and a friend. It might be time to figure out a way to state the obvious: Jerusalem is the seat of government for Israel. We don’t have to move the embassy there. We don’t have to like or agree with the Israeli decision on this. But it’s pretty stupid to deny the obvious just because we don’t want to offend some other nations that would be offended no matter what.

This is similar to an earlier thread on FR today. Not surprisingly, you link to an Israeli web site which picked up the story. Expect it to go viral in the Israeli media, since Obama's approval rating there is in the single digits.

Romney would be well-advised to refer to the Carney press conference incident when he arrives in Israel within the next day or two.

Mark Levin really socked it to the Administration on Carney's lack of response. I wouldn't even call it a gaffe on Carney's part. Rather, it was more likely due to Carney's realization that if he said Jerusalem is the capital, he'd be unable to tap dance around that statement to mollify Obama's Islamist friends in the Middle East.

Makes sense, actually. While Israelis understand Obama represents an existential danger, American Jews can indulge in the luxury of self-deception because of apparent safety.

Because of the Electoral College system, it really doesn't matter how NY Jews vote since the state will probably go to Zero by a fairly wide margin no matter what.

It's the Jews in Florida, and perhaps Ohio and Pennsylvania, who can swing those states away from Zero if they shift toward the GOP in significant numbers.

Romney will do much better than some past GOP candidates with the Jewish vote. He probably won't get a majority but 40% is a reasonable target.

Carney didn’t answer because it would have ended his career. To ACCURATELY say the capital is Jerusalem would have enraged the muzzies ..... to say, Tel Aviv would be fodder for the conservative media.

Either way he’s a dope in my book.

FYI, American Jews abroad in Israel are believed to have voted 3 to 1 for McCain over Obama in ‘08, just about the opposite of Jews in the US. My guess is that this year, American Jews abroad in Israel will vote even more overwhelmingly for Romney than they did for McCain.
