The Shelby County Commission has filed a subpoena in federal court asking for the identities of all online commenters in The Commercial Appeal's stories about suburban plans to create their own school districts. (snip) On June 26, the County Commission attorneys filed a federal court motion to block the Aug. 2 referendums to start school districts in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland and Millington. They argued that the people who arranged the referendums are trying to discriminate against African-Americans by carving out majority white suburban districts from the new unified school district. (snip) But, Levy said, "Let's hypothesize that people see racist things on a newspaper website. There's nothing illegal about saying racist things, so what's the point?" Or, he said, "Are they trying to intimidate a person by threatening to out them? Or maybe it allows them to shut up people whose speech they don't like." (snip) "It would be one thing if a private company were being trash-talked on the web anonymously. But this is our County Commission. What legitimate reason would a government body have for attempting to unmask commenters on these news stories?"

For the record, I support the communities that want nothing to do with the county-wide system. My guess is that Memphis is looking to others to pay the tax money needed to support its failing schools. The only way to do this is to tax those outside the Memphis system, and the purpose of the county-wide school system is to make those communities, through no choice of their own, part of the overall greater Memphis school system.
L. Brooks Patterson (MI), call Memphis!
“County Commission attorney Imad Abdullah” all I needed to read. Best argument I’ve ever read for home schooling and private (Prep) schools.
If I lived in Bartlett or Germantown I wouldn’t send my kid to school in inner city mempfrica in an M1 tank
I might make this assumption....that the commentary is starting to make marginal supporters of the city system to ask questions. The city board guys really can’t answer in a positive way, when these questions are thrown at them. So, yeah....they need to find a method to bully the media guys and the public from making charged-up statements.
Now, I will also make this comment...a fair number of people who go and make commentary off the newspaper’s site....aren’t locals. So intimidation won’t really work. But these idiots will take the data and just turn around to say that it’s outside influences here at work.

Better yet, how about calling out all those blacks who didn't want to live next door to whitey, whaaaaa! Memphis should mandate housing sells by one white house, then a black's house, next door to that an hispanic's house, then whatever other race, followed by a white's house, black's house, and on down the block so that no one is left out.
I mean racism is the only reason why a parent would want their children not exposed to the ghetto life...
Personally, they are wasting their time...
The school system is broken and even drawing out your own district is an short term answer...but homeschooling is the only way...
