Democrats Move to Include Gay Marriage in Party Platform
New York Times ^ | 7/30/12 | Jeremy W. Peters and Michael D. Shear

Democrats moved to make same-sex marriage a part of their party platform, placing language that would declare a right for gay men and lesbians to marry on track for approval by the party’s leadership.

Party officials met over the weekend in Minneapolis and approved the first step in the platform-amending process. In two weeks, the entire platform committee will vote on the matter at a meeting scheduled in Detroit. Then, if approved as expected, it would move on to convention delegates in Charlotte, N.C., for final approval in September.

According to Democrats who were briefed on the vote in Minneapolis, there was no objection when the issue came up. Though the language that was voted on still could be revised, party officials do not anticipate any major obstacles going forward.

The platform language approved over the weekend also included a condemnation of the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing legal same-sex marriages.

When your opponent insists on doing something really, really, really, really stupid... get out of his way.

Keep in mind the Democrats aren't tailoring their platform to win over Free Republic posters. It's only "really, really, really stupid" if that is what they are trying to do, which they are not.

Nope.

How would you like to be a moderate (D) down ticket in a conservative southern district having to defend that platform?

It is sign of desperation when you have to shore up your eroding base. Young voters are not going to turn out because he's already screwed them in the job market, they have already lost some of the black vote and he needs it ALL to have a chance, and this issue has been a consistent problem for them in all but the bluest of blue state.

This is an absolute loser for them and I hope they are stupid enough to do it.

Oh I think Obama is going to lose in November, and even if this platform plank helps a little bit, it won’t be enough to overcome everything else.

Bingo, no one else is this thread got this point. There was no reason to do this right now. This is some desperate political calculus by the Dems. they are running out of constituency groups. they have lost the lower middle class white vote..gone, was gone in 2010. This is a ploy to get better voter turnout in the Upper Middle Class suburbs like Faifax,Va and Jupiter, Florida. You know the demographic that just loves those stupid snarky network sitcoms and feels good about shopping Trader Joes and paying 6 bucks for an avocado. You know the ccouple which the husband long ago gave his testicles to his wife for safe keeping and they never really noticed the signs that little Brenden was way to into his Sister's Barbie dolls. Going to be epic watching Obama in the freezing rain at Grant Park in Chicago as Mochella and his spawn blubber as Obama gives his concession speech.

This is cool. The Democratic Party can officially be the gay party for the first gay president, not counting Hillary’s co presidency.

This should disenfranchise what’s left of Christian Dems. Everywhere its been put to a vote, it has lost. This should peel off some Catholics, blacks and hispanics from Dem ranks. It was ingenious of the gays to propose this. No one in Dem leadership has the guts to publicly oppose it, even if they personally are against it. Just when we need a miracle, the gays come through for us. I love it!

I don’t think we’ll get to see that Grant Park debacle as much as we’d all love it.

I think this is going to be such a margin they’ll know he’s doomed in time to avoid that.

No self-respecting narcissist allows themselves to be put in that position if they can avoid it.

So, if you hear before election day that their “celebration” will be low key, he’s toast.

Gay marriage, abortion, appeasement, pay more for worse medical care, higher taxes, strangulation of middle class job creators, phony baloney green subsidies, power blackouts, gays in the military, on an on...

Wow, all this and the worst economy in eighty years. And polls show that a majority of voters want four more years of it.

Suicidal insanity is now spelled U-S-A.

Fine. Let them run on a Sandusky-NAMBLA platform. We’ll stick to traditional marriage and family values.

They probably looked at the % the amendments passed by, how conservative or liberal the state is, and when they passed. Yes, they have a wonderful success rate. But what will it be in 10 years? In 20? In 30? I mean 30 years ago the issue of ‘gay marriage’ wasn’t even on the radar. Folks would have thought you were absolutely nutso if you said in 1982 only 61% of the voters of 2012 NC would think traditional state recognition of marriage was the way to go. Liberal Hawaii actually passed its amendment by 69% in ‘98, beating fairly conservative North Carolina by 8% with a 14 year gap.

I see your point and it does seem discouraging, but remember the Big Gay organizations have sold gay marriage as an equality thing, and gays have always been portrayed as victims. I think that pe5rception is beginning to change, despite the media. In a way it’s a compliment to Americansw because they want to be compassionate and help victims, they want to be fair.

Media can no longer cover up the bullying and hate that Big Gay is pouring out, or their strong drive to dominate and rob the treasury for themselves, their destruction of the Episcopal church, their demands for more and more privileges and the institution of homosexual sex ed. There may be a backlash happening here around CFA and gays in the military, especially the San Diego fiasco. Maybe.

This helps Obama, it doesn't hurt him. He announced support for gay marriage earlier this year and saw a huge surge in the intensity of his support and popularity among his core, and no drop in general polling numbers. The Party Platform of a sitting President mirrors his policy commitments, and failing to include this provision would have weakened that benefit of intensity.

It has been clear for many years that Democratic voters have zero problem splitting their tickets, voting against gay marriage as an isolated question while voting in favor of politicians who support gay marriage covertly or overtly, including to the extent of disregarding or overturning ballot questions about it. The people who would care enough not to vote Democrat over this one issue haven't been voting Democrat anyway.

This is a winner for the Dems. Harry Reid should call for an immediate vote in the Senate to repeal DOMA.\s
