WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government's only facility for handling, processing and storing weapons-grade uranium was temporarily shut this week after anti-nuclear activists, including an 82-year-old nun, breached security fences, government officials said on Thursday.

WSI Oak Ridge, the contractor responsible for protecting the facility at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is owned by the international security firm G4S, which was at the center of a dispute over security at the London Olympic Games.

Officials said that the facility was shut down on Wednesday at least until next week after three activists cut through perimeter fences to reach the outer wall of a building where highly-enriched uranium, a key nuclear bomb component, is stored.

The activists painted slogans and threw what they said was human blood on the wall of the facility, one of numerous buildings in the facility known by the code name Y-12 that it was given during World War II, officials said.

While moving between the perimeter fences, the activists triggered sensors which alerted security personnel. However, officials conceded that the intruders still were able to reach the building's walls before security personnel got to them.

Well I feel safe and secure!!!!
This is just stupid. We have the finest military personnel in the world. This base should be under control and protected by the US Military not some outside private security guard agency!

  1. Why do we only have 1 such facility?
  2. Why is an "International" security firm in charge of it?!!!!?
  3. How could a handful of protestors breach the fence?
  4. Why hasn't the "International security firm been fired yet?

they should be guarded by the TSA...

yeah, they'd still be able to breach security, but they'd be humiliated, felt up and robbed before they did.

I believe in reasoned protest. but entering this facility’s security parameter should garner some very stiff penalties.

Levy some big dollar fines and put these jackasses in prison for a year. Then let them know that if they do it again, it will be five years, then ten.

The First Amendment does not give these folks the right to breach any government facility, and doing this sort of thing can aid our enemies.

Bad idea.

Too many muslims are employed by the TSA.

Shoot the sons of b!tches on sight! Then hang their bodies on the fence near the gates as a warning to others! Like we used to do coyotes before the faint hearts started crying.

What makes you think it wasn't Holder's peeps that were given the sweetheart contract?

I would be looking at the entire crews on duty that day.

...like that's gonna happen!

Kind of hilarious that a British corporation is holding all our atomic bomb fuel.
What makes you think it wasn't Holder's peeps that were given the sweetheart contract?
Maybe the fact that Wackenhut (WSI) has held the contract since 1999? This obviously has Bill Clinton's fingerprints all over it. The nun was from Nevada - the same state as Harry Reid. Think about it...
