Virgil Goode's candidacy may help Obama
roanoke.com ^ | Aug 1 2012 | By Associated Press

Most people outside Southwest Virginia have never heard of Virgil Goode, a former Franklin County congressman with a distinctive drawl who conceivably could decide the presidential election. But he is well known to President Barack Obama's team of political advisers.

Goode served six terms in Congress and is gathering signatures to appear on the ballot here as the presidential candidate from the Constitution Party.

He's already on the ballot in more than a dozen other states with an anti-immigration, pro-term limit platform he hopes makes a dent with the electorate.

It's not likely to be much of a dent, but enough in Virginia for Obama campaign officials to take close notice of his potentially helpful candidacy.

But within the Obama camp he is considered one of two who could tilt the race by pulling votes away from Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

The other is Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, a former two-term Republican governor of New Mexico whose presence on the ballot could make a difference in the presidential contest in states such as New Mexico and Colorado.

But Democrats see Goode and Johnson as this year's Ralph Nader, whom they still blame for Al Gore's loss to George W. Bush in 2000.

"If Virgil Goode gets on the ballot in Virginia that is going to make it very tough on Romney," said Democratic strategist Joe Trippi, a veteran of presidential campaigns. It's difficult to imagine Romney getting the 270 electoral votes he needs to win if he doesn't carry Virginia, Trippi said, adding that Goode "would be potentially crippling to Romney."

“Opposing Romney IS NOT supporting Obama”

It is called divide and conquer. You are insuring 4 more years of Obama. Your hate for Mitt must really run deep.

Barring something unforeseen, our next President is either going to be Romney or Obama. Any votes these guys take from Romney are fewer votes Obama needs to win. That is the mathematics of it.

Perot and Nader are the history of it.

Unless someone can show me that someone other than Romney or Obama can win in November, I'm holding my nose and voting ABO.

Well, Dem support in the form of the Green Party collecting signatures to get him on the ballot is already public knowledge.

Haven’t heard aboutr them directly funding him here though I expect that to slip out as time goes by.

I know the feeling. I watched Santorum lose several states by less than 5 points.

I know who Jum is and exactly what he stands for. You are an anonymous internet poster who could portray yourself any way you want to.

When the known quantity of JR takes a position it can be believed.

When the mystery guest spends post after post trying to convince freepers not to vote for the only person with any kind of chance to rid us of the worst, most anti-constitutional, most power-grabbing threat to our children's liberty ever to inhabit the WH I am very suspect of the motive.

JR, sorry to include you in this but SV saw fit to hide behind your coat.

” Tell Jim Robinson he is a “Romney supporter” because he opposes Romney.”

Lol.

A swing and a miss.

Telling though, at many levels.

Ask Jim to put back your pulled posts instead!

“Tell Jim Robinson he is a “Romney supporter” because he opposes Romney.”

That should read - “Tell Jim Robinson he is an “Obama supporter” because he opposes Romney.”

Jim Robinson vehemently opposes Romney, as do I. Romney should NOT be the GOP candidate. Romney is a pro-homosexual, pro-abortion, pro-gun grabber, and pro big government statism. He is NOT a conservative in any way, shape, form, or manner. Being ABO is NOT enough reason to vote for him. It is a foolish path to go down.

IMO, supporting Romney just keeps ensuring that the GOP establishment will keep backing others like Romney in the future.

Once again, regardless of what you write, opposing Romney is NOT supporting Obama. You had better stop saying or implying otherwise.

While I appreciate your zeal for Rep. Goode, even if he was ,by some miracle, to gain the Republican nomination and then, by an even greater miracle (I’m talkin’, stop the sun in its path miracle) win the Presidency, he would not be able to put the toothpaste back into the tube as concerns the same sex or abortion controversies. He would have to deal with the situations as they now exist. I don’t believe Gov. Romney is pro same sex marriage or pro abortion. I think he is just living in Realville when he speaks on those subjects. He does leave me cold on the gun thing, but two out of three isn’t bad

“JR, sorry to include you in this but SV saw fit to hide behind your coat.”

Fella, I only called on Jim Robinson because he:

(1) Owns this website.
(2) Has repeatedly expressed his “dislike” for Romney - as you just found out.
(3) Doesn’t like being told he is a “Obama Supporter” because he opposes Romney.
(4) Doesn’t like it when other conservatives, like myself, are denigrated in this manner.

Folks ALL the things that Free Republic is FOR (see Jim Robinson’s general message) are NOT qualities that Mitt Romney has. Ergo...get a clue. FR is NOT a place to be “singing the praises of Romney.” FR is the home of the resistance to the GOPe and Romney that currently represents the GOPe!

“I don’t believe Gov. Romney is pro same sex marriage or pro abortion. I think he is just living in Realville when he speaks on those subjects.”

First of all. I am NOT zealous for Goode. I am against Mitt Romney and the GOP establishment that manipulated getting him the nomination. Virgil Goode is just the most viable way to express my anger with the GOPe picking Romney.

Next...Romney’s record does NOT support what you say about him (he has a clear history of supporting homosexuals, abortion, etc.). Also, as I have told others. FR is NOT a place to be singing Romney’s praise.

Saying you are voting for Romney because you want Anyone But Obama (ABO) is one thing. However, when one actually starts saying Romney is OK....that is pushing the envelope.

Read post #29 to get the feeling of Jim Robinson’s, the website owner’s, view on Mitt Romney. He dislikes Romney more than I. Like I said, this isn’t a place to sing Romney’s praise.

You should also read post #29 by Jim Robinson. Stop posting garbage on FR that suggests that voting for Goode, or anyone other than Romney - in protest of Romney, is a vote for Obama. Not voting for Romney is NOT voting for Obama.

A vote is a vote for whomever receives it.

“Sola Verita seems unable to understand that a vote for Goode will only help obama. Goode, LITERALLY, has no chance, NADDA NADDA NADDA to win ANYTHING.”

That is irrelevant. Romney should NOT be the GOP candidate...period. A vote for Goode is a vote for him (Goode) and a slap at the GOP establishment that chose him. You should also read post #29 to see how Jim Robinson feels about pro-Romney rhetoric.

Why not kick Romney to the curb and put Virgil Goode on the ballot as our nominee. He is so much better than Romney who is basically Obama.

According to his FEC filings, as of 07/09/2012 no one’s given him any money, and he hasn’t spent any money in any state LOL!

The next quarterly report (Oct. quarterly) will be in Nov so we may not hear of the Dem’s contributions until after the election.
How convenient.

Though there may be other reports he has to make before then, I hope so.
