RUN HIDE FIGHT Surviving an Active Shooter

DHS-funded video gives tips to survive a shooter. http://www.federalnewsradio.com/473/2966001/DHS-funded-video-gives-tips-to-su... After last week's shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., the city of Houston has released a how-to video on surviving a shooter event. The video was created with funds from the Homeland Security Department.

"I can't imagine the horror and grief. If it is at all possible for any good to come out of it, perhaps it can be letting people know the options to consider if it happens again," said Mayor Annise Parker in a statement.

Entitled "Run, Hide, Fight," the video depicts a fictional shooting incident at an office building.

"It may feel like just another day at the office, but occasionally life feels more like an action movie than reality," says a narrator.

The City of Houston's website offers these tips:

Run if a safe path is available. Always try and escape or evacuate even if others insist on staying. Encourage others to leave with you but don't let the indecision of others slow down your own effort to escape. Once you are out of the line of fire, try to prevent others from walking into the danger zone and call 9-1-1. If you can't get out safely, find a place to hide. When hiding, turn out lights, remember to lock doors and silence your ringer and vibration mode on your cell phone As a last resort, working together or alone, act with aggression, use improvised weapons and fight. Houston's Public Safety Office said it had started working on the video before the theater shooting, reports the ABC station in Houston.

hope someone in your group is armed. Or your survival chances are slim if the madman is seeking you out.

I think I’ll close in on the enemy in an extremely rapid and violent manner instead. For all you know, your exits could be blocked or booby trapped.

do we need a video to handle highjackers like Todd Beamer and those on Flight 93?

Stupid DHS. Should be titled “Run, Hide, Shoot.”

There is actually some good logical stuff here, although, "Always try and escape or evacuate even if others insist on staying. Encourage others to leave with you but don't let the indecision of others slow down your own effort to escape." is a recipe for panic and trampling to death. Oh, and by all means call 911. In the seconds that the gunfire occurs, the police will be there within minutes.

Of course, it doesn't mention anything about citizens having weapons that could actually shoot back at a nutcase. When will these rabbits stop wanting to run and trampling other rabbits and defend themselves? Is everyone in a movie theater, mall, sport event, or other mass gathering simply going to let the bad guys just shoot at random?

And the anti-gun crowd think if they outlawed ALL guns tomorrow, there would be no more guns tomorrow? Really? How could that even happen? There are millions of weapons and billions of ammo and if the USA said no more tomorrow, they would still exist for decades (guns/ammo have long shelf life), not to mention foreign imports. These people have NO common sense.

Arm everybody, including me. I'm, going to start carrying if my SO and I go to a mass gathering. So arrest me and take the gun and I pay the fine. Better that that some nutcase start opening fire on the crowd. Yes, the prick sent smoke bombs into the theater, but I still believe if one person had been armed he may have found a bead of the shooter.

Better to try than not. \

Well, this is decent, but I would amend it slightly:

SHOOT Run Hide Fight

1: Shoot: If you have a firearm with you, a clear line-of-fire, and reasonable expectation that there are no other people behind the assailant, carefully (but quickly) aim and fire your weapon until you are out of ammunition. Aim for the center of mass, unless you suspect or observe the assailant is wearing body armor. In that case, take more careful aim, and deliver your firepower to the head of the assailant.

The instructions should read:

1. un-holster your weapon
2. wait for a clear shot
3. shoot the M F
4. until he’s dead
5. if he moves after that, go back to step 3 and repeat
6. call your attorney and tell him your situation
7. be polite to the police when they arrive
8. provide your identity upon request
9. withhold a statement until your attorney is present

Run? Hide? Fight back with something you’ve found around you?

Good grief! Al Gore, is that you?

Several shots center of mass regardless. If he’s wearing body armor it’ll still hurt and disorient him for a few seconds. Then go for the head if he’s still standing.

Want a bottom line? Carry and practice; carry and pull it out and shoot: don't carry and become a target. It's really that simple.

If you can get a CCW permit, great. But if you can't, carry anyway. The crazies are getting worse. Would you rather face a weapons charge or watch your loved one or other innocents die?

Personally, I am going to buy a calif legal small arm and now start carrying everywhere. Don't like it ATF? Too bad. I will protect my family. I'm not going to take my wife to a theater, church, mall, and hope that the police finally show up while the scumbag is shooting everyone. I WILL shoot back even with an illegal weapon. Deal with it.

I STILL say “front sight”...

Read Ayoob. I think the actual sequence, IIRC, is 1)COVER, 2)Concealment, 3) then engage. Clear your mind of everything except front sight. Ayoob wrote that when they studied quite a number of LEO shootings many of the skilled shooters had struck the assailant’s weapon or weapon hand. After interviews they realized that THAT was what the guy was looking at. Like you say, Laz, center mass, front sight.

I had read the story but I hadn’t seen the video until last night. I recommend it.

Unless you have a workplace like mine that is a victim zone. No weapons on premises and they will throw you off staff if you violate policy. Once a doc is thrown off staff at one hospital it is virtually impossible to ever get privileges at another hospital. So we are a victim only zone......and all the potential bad guys know it.

Unfortunately for a lot of us, there are multiple other places people work that have the same policies, including schools and government buildings. All you can do is tell your next of kin to sue the place of employment if something happens to you because of that policy. If I owned a business I would encourage employees to carry.

The shooter at the Aurora theater, at least the one they caught (there were two gas masks found), appeared to the layman to be wearing body armor, but it was just a tactical vest - 0 ballistic value.

Shoot center mass, but head shots are always acceptable, even with a helmet. Even with good body armor, the impact will set the shooter down for your kill shot.

I am also working in a disarmament zone. While there are armed guards, there is still the chance that a rogue worker can bring his or her own weapon in order to commit atrocities, and I cannot respond in kind to take them out, since I will be unarmed. We workers can hope for a response from the guards, but that takes time, courage on the part of the respondants, and a little luck.

I am left with few good options. But hey, I'm fatalistic: If God wants me that bad, He can have me!

How about, “1. Seek cover. 2. Draw your weapon and fire from concealment.”

We are dealing here with demon possed persons. What is now called “mental illnesses” today is really demonic possesion/oppression.

use improvised weapons and fight

A rational policy toward CC (non-existent in virtually all big corporations) would go a long way toward eliminating workplace shootings. I don't understand the thought processes that go on in the heads of corporate executives. It must be something like this:

"I'm worried about some employee bringing a gun to work and going postal killing a bunch of people. How do I take stepts to prevent this? I KNOW! I'll forbid the legitimate carrying of firearms in the office. Then when someone who is determined to murder a bunch of people, they'll look at the corporate policy and think - gosh I could get fired if I carry a gun to work. I can't kill all those people because of a corporate policy."
That's all I can come up with as to what goes through the minds of the morons who set these policies.

It's impossible to give the correct tactics for every situation. Sometime the best tactic would be to immediately attack with whatever weapon is handy even if it's just those weapons you were born with. Sometimes it's best to seek concealment or better yet cover. Sometimes running away as quickly as possible is the best plan.

Good trainers try to teach the appropriate skills to achieve all of these tactical objectives and then try to teach you when each should be used. Stating that everyones strategy should be to "run, then hide, then fight" is ultimately going to get people killed. On the other hand, having some plan, even if it's tactically unsound, is better than milling around like an idiot sheep waiting to be slaughtered.
