Standing ovation for hijab-wearing Saudi woman athlete as she finishes Olympic 800m heat
Daily Mail ^ | 9th August 2012 | Adam Shergold

'They say in the Olympics it's not the winning that counts, but the taking part.

And that was certainly the case this morning as Sarah Attar, the first female track athlete to compete for Saudi Arabia in the Olympics, was cheered every step of the way in her 800m heat.

In the end, she completed the two laps of the track nearly 45 seconds behind the winner, but her participation alone represented an historic moment.

Attar completed the two laps of the 800m in a time of two minutes 44.95 seconds, nearly 45 seconds behind the leader

Dressed in a long-sleeved green training top, long jogging bottoms and a white hijab, she certainly stood out on the start line in sweltering heat in the Olympic Stadium.

And it was quickly obvious that Attar wasn't going to be able to keep pace with the rest of the field as she fell a long way behind.

But whatever the sport, Olympic crowds love a plucky trier and Attar was given a standing ovation as she crossed the finish line, almost a full lap behind the others.'

The hijab might have been worth a few seconds but not 45.

I’m surprised this woman was allowed to compete at all. I have family that used to live in Kuwait and the stories they told about life for women in Saudi was heartbreaking.

She was 45 seconds behind. Islam is 14 centuries behind. Who wants to cheer that?

There was a time when such an obviously stupid stunt in track would have been laughed out of the stadium.

There was a time when womwn wanted to compete and to establish new records in their sport.

Now they stand and cheer a uniform of female slavery and oppression and congratulate themselves on their support of “diversity”.

Mmmm...after further reading, this chick is from California, with duel citizenship in the USA and SA.

So, she lives in the outdoor fun and sun state and has access to all kinds of training facilities and that is the best she could do?

I think I can run faster then that.

The over-the-top PC reaction to this is maddening but predictable. ‘All about taking part, not medals’ etc.

But they refuse to see what is going on here. The IOC have capitulated to the Saudis and their backward-looking idiocy. Plenty of Muslim women compete and wear appropriate, standard athletics clothing (e.g. the Turks).

‘But this woman was born in America, has dual citizenship, etc.’ Fine. Why is she opting for the 7th Century instead of the 21st?

If an Amish woman arrived to compete in her gray dress, bonnet and black leather shoes, you would find precious few praising her and far more mocking her and, of course, her faith.

The number of people praising this as a ‘step forward’ is staggering and dismaying. If she shows up in a burqa that will that represent a giant leap?

How exactly does she qualify for the Olympic Games in the first place?

Can’t have a moment of silence for the murdered Israeli athletes because it might offend the Muslims. But we can have this display of a handicapped woman? And people cheered this farce?

It is because of one word: POLITICS.

The olympics movement has been “dripping” for years with politics.

"...she completed the two laps of the track nearly 45 seconds behind the winner..."

If Moe had wanted women to be able to run, he wouldn't have condemned them to the burqa.

What a joke. I hope they put her through a full body scan before they allowed her near any of the real athletes.

To be fair, it wasn’t her fault, it was her brother holding her back. Had he been faster, or if she had been allowed to go out without a blood relative, she could have done much better.

Oh gee, this is like watching the Indy 500 but one team is bringing in a Stanley Steamer.

Its like a science fair competition and one contestant brings a box of rocks.

What will Islam be like 200 years from now when man will be traveling across the galaxy? Or in just the near future?

Still doing the same ole thing. Nothing, because its anal, obsolete, a dead end culture.

That outfit didn’t slow her down that much, she wasn’t at all fast to begin with. But what the heck it gave her a chance to go to the Olympics. No way could she have made the US team, or any other team for that matter. She was a joke.
