Brigadier General Becomes First Openly Gay Flag Officer in U.S. Military

(Arlington, VA) Army Brigadier General Tammy Smith has become the first openly gay flag officer to come out while currently serving in the U.S. military. She was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in a private ceremony which took place today at the Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. BG Smith received her stars from her wife, Tracey Hepner.

“For years, gay and lesbian generals and admirals were forced to hide their families in order to protect their careers. It is a great day for our military and for our nation when this courageous leader is finally able to recognize her wife for her support and sacrifice in the same way that all military families should be recognized for their service to our country,” said Sue Fulton, a 1980 West Point graduate and member of the OutServe Board of Directors.

Very soon, straight white males will have no chance of being promoted.

But of course they're not mating. Mating would imply at least a tenuous understanding of the potential consequences of the act and the lifetime of commitment and sacrifice it entails if done properly.

No, what they are doing shouldn't be dignified by use of the term mating. What they are doing is satisfying one of the basest and least contemplative biological functions, akin to taking a crap, popping a zit, or farting.

Masturbation would be a step up, as it at least retains some dignity in privacy and does not carry the malfeasant aspect of encouraging someone else's sin.

It was that way in the US Department of Energy when Hazel O’Leary was Secretary. She caused all sorts of chaos at Los Alamos.

"I will not lie, cheat, or steal. Nor will I tolerate those who do." — I think this is part of the Officer’s Honor Code.

The Cadet Honor Code at West Point and other military academies such as New Mexico Military Insititute.

Both the United States Military Academy and the United States Air Force Academy have adopted a Cadet Honor Code as a formalized statement of the minimum standard of ethics expected of cadets. Other military schools have similar codes with their own methods of administration. The United States Naval Academy has a related standard, known as the Honor Concept. Also Virginia Military Institute, Texas A&M University, The Citadel, United States Merchant Marine Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy and many others. The OCS HONOR CODE says: An Officer Candidate will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do. John 3:2o Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. Ephesians 5:11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.(NIV1984)

Thank you for your service!

Just retired, myself.

When I was commissioned, it was against a court-martial offense (not to mention the sodomy, dishonoring the uniform, and false official statements part).

When I was in, it became more and more acceptable.

Glad I retired before it became a prerequisite...

No way would I counsel (much less encourage) someone to join now, at least not without full disclosure on what they will very likely run into.

This forced moral decay will be the ruination of one of the mainstays of our Country (and one of the top several professions with a favorable view in the eyes of the Citizens). With no sense of morality or concept of a higher purpose outside one’s own immediate sexual or sensual gratification, there is no basis for a sense of loyalty to the Constitution as opposed to the current occupier of the position of the Commander-in-Chief.

Nor will there be any compunction at higher levels against turning the military against the Constitution they are sworn to protect, and the Citizens from whom they obtain the authorization to do so.

As Jefferson noted (IIRC), “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.”

This must be turned around! We must, as a People, regain our sense of morality, and become worthy of the blessings of our form of government. Otherwise, we will truly have the sort of government we deserve...

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!

How on earth she would be able to discipline any lower-ranking soldier for lying is beyond me.

If you can’t trust the soldier’s word, the whole thing falls apart. Life-and-death decisions must be made on the basis of truth, and that can only come when one’s word is impeachable.

She made damn certain she was going to be promoted to BG before she told the military that she was a dyke.

Going by her picture, I don't think it was a secret.

She got promoted then said she was a dyke, then started parading her “wife” around.

That's the weird part, and her statement about "hiding families." Just keep it in the closet like the old days, please.

The only way to fix this now is to give a Dishonorable Discharge to everyone who took advantage of the policy and participated in the mischief. They have to know that misconduct will have consequences, even if it had political support.

Otherwise, the policy could be shifted back and forth depending on who is President.
