Tampa Bay Times ^

"Throughout his life, Mitt Romney has made great decisions, and choosing Paul Ryan as his running mate is a truly inspired choice. ... Paul Ryan is a courageous reformer who understands our nation's challenges, has proposed bold policy solutions to solve them, and has shown the courage to stand up to President Obama and other Washington politicians trying to tear him down.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

Me pouting? Who’s whining that Ryan is now under Romney’s thumb?

Let’s give the guy a couple days to get out there on the stump before we all conclude that he’s been muzzled by the “GOPe” and will just be “another RINO”, or, worse yet, a “CINO”.

Great choice. Romney has made many choices in the past that would lead any clear thinking person to conclude that he is not conservative. He has been talking a good game for some time but his choice for VP is an “action” that he could take that would demonstrate to skeptics that perhaps he means what he now says.

And the Ryan choice was bold and not without risk precisely because of Ryan’s “hard core” conservative economic positions. Obama now has a huge opening to demagogue Ryan’s budget. The question for me will be how far will the media go in attempting to prevent Romney/Ryan from gaining equal access to get the truth out? I think RR can win the debate if they can get their message out.

I pretty much agree with W. James Antle, III's assessment.

Still a Paul Ryan Skeptic

I'm an admirer of Paul Ryan's but even if the rumors are true I stick by my original assesments. I think wonkish conservatives are overstating Ryan's appeal to rank-and-file center-right voters. I think the vice presidency is a poor use for Ryan's skills.

I'm not convinced it makes the enactment of Ryan-like entitlement reforms any more likely than any other set of circumstances if Romney was already committed to those policy goals. If he isn't, he's just brought the man who could be his most credible Republican critic inside the tent.

And if the ticket loses, it will push the Republican Party in a bad direction on entitlements and occasion some really annoying David Frum op-eds.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong on any of those points.

Not sold yet. While I like the guy, Paul Ryan, I have heard a lot of people Like Virgil Goode say his budget plans do not go far enough and are not the best plan they would do. And I recall someone commenting in 2009 about how Ryan wasn’t that conservative during the Bush presidency. But I wanted Ryan to run for president. We’ll See as they say. Some mixed messages on his record. Overall, I like him, but need to know more. And Romney is still Romney.

My concern now is that their is no turning back now. So there is no way to dump Romney off the ticket as the republican nominee.

“I was out at that rally (front row, too!).”

Oh..wow...lucky you! And to meet them? What a fantastic opportunity!

After Carville made that stupid remark, while sitting in an air conditioned room, I looked at the weather report in Norfolk....84 degrees, 72% humidity.

I thought Ryan and Romney both gave excellent speeches. What was the atmosphere on the ground? It is sometimes hard to get a real feel watching events on Tv.

Will all the reporters now descend like buzzards on Janesville, Wisconsin, looking to dig up dirt on Ryan?

The scuttlebutt I'm hearing is Ryan picked his nose when he was 5 years old. Only a matter of time before the New York Times leads on the story!

Bedecked in his usual comfort wear(gym shorts and Birkenstocks),Ears is smoking four cigs out of each side of his mouth, has white stuff under his nose and is throwing his ever present basketball at the FNC tuned TV.

He is also throwing F bombs(which insiders say is commonplace).
Moochie’s opening the door once in a while to hurl plates(and epithets) at him as we speak.
Booking trips to Bali, Monaco and having her aides do a New York J Crew and Barney’s run.

Plug’s cell phone has been confiscated by panicking staffers(he’s going to develop some pressing family matters or prostate cancer) and Val and the gang have Hildebeast on a charter back here to the states.
Meanwhile, Biden’s walking about asking “what’s going on?”

Der Sleek is rubbing his hands together and burning his “little black book’.

Bruce Jenner’s plastic surgeon is on his way to DC for a consult and surgery scheduling with Cankles.

Carville’s serpent’s head has just exploded.
Bill Burton’s buck teeth have just shot out of the front of his mouth while he is lying on FNC.
Holder’s in his office, busily shredding.

What else?

Come on James. Have you ever really looked in the mirror????

Ryan looked, cool, calm and collected and very relaxed, up front and honest. He lookded as he should look... excited, casual and ready to take our country back.

Works for me.

“I’m hoping he was a fun loving good guy”

Hate to bust your bubble, but Ryan drove the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile as a part-time job in college.

I can see the rats finding pictures of Ryan driving around in the weinermobile selling hot dogs to little kids. Kinda like Dukakis in the tank.

We are doomed. Doomed I tell you! Doomed. (sarc)

But I love the Ryan pick. Smart, sharp, and will pick Biden’s bones apart cleaner than a flock of vultures. Just the plugs will be left on the debate floor.

The atmosphere was electric from the start.. The first speaker was Rep Randy Forbes, followed by Lt Gov Bill Bolling, Sen. (hopefully) George Allen, then Gov. Bob McDonnell, who introduced Romney.

Romney, who emerged from the USS Wisconsin, gave a few remarks, then intro`d Ryan to the roar of approval from the crowd of about 6,000. When Ryan emerged from the Wisconsin, he was welcomed like a rock star. Ryan hit on the key points about our rights coming from God, about how the current regime has damaged us economically and fiscally. The reference to God given rights drew some huge positive response.

While the atmosphere was electric and enthusiastic, there was also an underlying sense of urgency and seriousness about the all-important need to defeat Obama.

Everyone seemed to be very favorable of Romney`s choice of Ryan. I am. I was amazed at how normal and approachable both men seemed to be. When shaking his hand, I urged Romney to get into telling his life story so voters can learn more than just about Bain and his stint as MA Governor. He slapped me on the shoulder and said, “I`ll do it!”
