5 Reasons why choosing Paul Ryan was a great decision
Catholic Vote ^ | August 10, 2012 | Joshua Mercer

Posted on 08/11/2012 1:35:39 PM PDT by NYer

Minutes ago in Norfolk, Virginia, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan was introduced as Mitt Romney’s running mate. It turns out all that talk about Romney being risk averse was a bigger head fake that those bogus rumors of considering Condi Rice.

There are five reasons why Mitt Romney’s bold pick of Paul Ryan is great for America.

1. Picking a Catholic running mate means that the Vice Presidential debate will feature two people who profess the Catholic faith but who are on opposite sides of life, marriage and religious liberty. The contrast couldn’t be greater. Paul Ryan has been outspoken on life and marriage. Joe Biden has supported abortion and pushed the White House to support same-sex ‘marriage.’ As CatholicVote noted yesterday, Paul Ryan has denounced the mandate: “This is much, much bigger than about contraception. This is about religious freedom, First Amendment rights, and how this progressive philosophy of fungible rights of a living breathing constitution really clashes and collides with these core rights that we built our society and country around.”

2. For the first time since Roe v. Wade, the Republican party will have a pro-life Catholic on the national ticket. The Republican Party has only nominated a Catholic once on the national ticket, when Barry Goldwater tapped New York Rep. William Miller on the 1964 ticket. And thankfully, Republican primary voters have, in the past, said no to pro-abortion Republican candidates like Rudy Guiliani. Paul Ryan has been a strong and consistent pro-life vote in Congress.

3. The Church, as well as the country, can have a conversation about government spending within its means. It’s one of the most important economic challenges facing us right now. Social Security and Medicare are set to go supernova in the budget as a title wave of Baby Boomers retire. Making the decision to slow down the rate of growth in these programs (not even actual cuts) would bring our fiscal house in order. But we’ll have to get beyond the hot air and vicious attacks.

4. And now we’ll have that national conversation on subsidiarity, too. The Obama campaign has said that they modeled their health care plan after Mitt Romney. But even if that’s true, it forgets the principle of federalism — the notion that the federal government should be limited to a few functions, allowing states and local communities (and civic organizations) the opportunity to tackle the problems in ways that work best for them. A one-size-fits-all solution has to work for the military, but why should we only have one health care plan across 3,000 miles?

5. Paul Ryan comes from a Midwestern blue collar district, critical to the GOP’s 2012 effort. For many years it was held by Lee Aspin, a Democrat who became Clinton’s Defense Secretary. In fact, President Clinton bested Bob Dole in this district by about 12 points. If Republicans want to win the White House, they’ll need to win the hearts and minds of people like those who live in Wisconsin’s First District. Paul Ryan speaks their language and understands their concerns and is a natural person to make the case in industrial Catholic cities like Dubuque, Saginaw, and Toledo.

Mitt Romney went bold and picked Paul Ryan as his running mate. We’re now going to have an election based on ideas. We’ll have that much needed debate on Medicare spending. But we’re also not walking away from a debate on the HHS mandate and life and marriage, too.

Game on.

Obama has been assembling a select subset of Catholic allies, cultivating heretical pseudo-Catholic doctrine, and recruiting and grooming a counter-Magisterium literally since he was a young Marxist 20-something.

In 1986, Obama, then a community organizer in Chicago, attended training offered by the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) --- Alinsky's group --- with funds provided by the Archdiocese of Chicago. The story is in Schlafly's new book, "No Higher Power" (Link).

So he has a longstanding "special relationship" of a perverse sort, with Catholics: that is, for the purpose of splitting and wrecking the one institution he knows he has to take down.

He'll set up Darth Sebelius as the de-facto administrator of all formerly-Catholic hospitals and charities in the United States. As for the resisters, some will end up financially ruined, some in prison, some framed and disgraced, some dead.

Care to join us?

The best reasons I can think of are

1. Recent Tea Party success and pressure forced Romney to select Paul Ryan, the champion of fiscal sanity!

2. Obama thought he got away with bich-slapping Ryan around at that retreat and again at a public meeting on Obamacare, where he rudely berated Paul and his ideas.

Mrs. Don-o Plugs Biden , Stretch Pelosi, and Horseface Kerry, are not Catholics. At best they might be cafeteria catholics, or Catholics in name only.

I think you’re right. Obama and Biden will refuse to debate.

Also, the media will cover for them and make it all Romney’s fault

My libtard friends and acquaintances on Facebook are awfully quiet today. I expect a deluge of posts Tuesday morning after Jon Stewart tells them how they should ‘feel’ about Paul Ryan.

Wait a minute...I've been told HUNDREDS...even possibly THOUSANDS of times...that Mitt's Mormonism is irrelevant to the POTUS office...

I disagree with you most of the time, but that is a pretty fair point.

Romney's Mormonism doesn't matter and isn't worth talking about, but suddenly Ryan's Catholicism not only matters but is being heralded as a great asset.

It's just politics is all. The truth is that partisan political folks (which is most of us on political forums like this) will generally vote for whomever represents our policy positions best no matter what. We have our team and half the battle is defeating the other team. We will make excuses for our guy/girl even if all we have to care about is just defeating the opposition. Human nature and politics aren't going to change.

I don't personally care that Romney is a Mormon, and I don't care that Ryan is a Catholic. Romney/anyone represents my views better than Obama/Biden. Romney/anyone is the only ticket that has a chance of removing Obama/Biden from office. That is reason enough to vote for Romney/anyone. I think Ryan is a good choice because it may focus the election more on debt and spending. That is a debate the country needs. If I found out Ryan was a nutter who really believed in the great cockroach God I'd still vote for him so long as he lobbied and/or voted for my policy positions (and kept his cockroach worship secret so as not to become a liability). Silly examples, but you get the point (even if you don't agree).

Plus I can’t wait to see the debates between Ryan and plugs.

Ryan better be prepared to respond to Biden when he makes stuff up as usual. “There you go again Joe making stuff up”.

Since love is married to truth — and love rejoices in it (1 Cor. 13:6) — I have to ask you: Why would anybody want to enable falsehood?

Tuesday? ;-) Expect some feedback on Monday, once they have listened to the Sunday Morning News Programs. NBC has already announced that tomorrow morning's program, "Meet the (De)Press(ed)" will focus on "Who is Paul Ryan?" I'll be tuning into Rush Limbaugh on Monday to get his take on the announcement. Regardless of what all the 'talking heads' have to say, I am very happy with Romney's choice and look forward to the debates. Game on!

(All I'm addressing there is consistency; I'm glad you see my point at least on this question)

You make a good point concerning the revelance of Romney's religious beliefs verses Ryan's. But that's where it ends. IMO, What matters most are person's convictions; not so much their religion affiliations.

I know Mormons who are very pro life, unlike Romney. And there are Catholics, Nancy Pelosi for one, who don't seem to have a problem with aborting the unborn, unlike Ryan.

With his pick, Romney will pull more true conservative votes. We who screamed, shouted, and stomped our feet over Romney becoming the GOP candidate, surely played a role in that selection process.

There is a scripture, though I don't recall its location in the Bible, commanding us to hold whatever moral ground we can until the Lord arrives to judge the nation. Maybe with Ryan on the team, we will now be able to do at least that.
