Anti-Bullying Campaign Airs Its First Ad, Targets Parents

WASHINGTON — Parents are urged to teach their kids to speak up if they witness school bullying in new ads that target an issue that top Obama administration officials vow to make a national priority.

long-term campaign featuring television, print and web ads was unveiled Monday and will start running in October. The campaign is a joint effort by the Ad Council, a nonprofit that distributes public service announcements, and the Free to Be Foundation, a group that includes entertainers Marlo Thomas, Alan Alda and Mel Brooks.

one television ad, two girls are seen bullying a schoolmate, mocking her appearance and telling her that nobody likes her. A fourth girl looks on but doesn't intervene.

"Every day, kids witness bullying," says a narrator. "They want to help, but don't know how. Teach your kids how to be more than a bystander."

Online and print ads will warn parents that their kids regularly encounter negative messages such as "you're worthless" and "everybody hates you."

ads were unveiled Monday at an annual anti-bullying summit hosted by the Department of Education in Washington, where lawmakers, educators and government officials convened to develop a national strategy aimed at ensuring a safe, healthy learning environment for students. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius addressed the summit Monday, and Education Secretary Arne Duncan will deliver a keynote speech on Tuesday.

1) What **rational** parent would even consider sending their children into an institution where they would " **regularly**encounter negative messages such as "you're worthless" and "everybody hates you."? Hopefully, these ads will result in a massive withdraw of children from the government schools this August.

2) While I do not condone ignoring abuse, the very fact that government schools are run by government functionaries may teach the children to be comfortable being government snitches on the family and neighbors. In a private school reporting to government workers wouldn't be an issue.

3) As you drive by your local government owned and run socialist-entitlement schools, as yourself, "Does that building look like a prison? In what ways are the children ( who are there under police threat) treated like prisoners."? If children are treated like prisoners we shouldn't be surprised to see bullying and cliques since both are manifestations of prison social pathology.

Sounds like Obama’s message to people who own small businesses.

Another Reason to Homeschool
Ping to a few friends and others who have pinged me in the last day or two.

Two more things:

Bullying is harmful not only to the child being bullied but also to those witnessing it. Many children live in fear that they may be the next target.

When we lived on the East Coast our family went to the ocean beach often. I never recall seeing bullying on the beach. I think there are many reasons for this.

—There is adequate adult supervision, ( being on the edge of the ocean) by parents who are emotionally invested in their children.

—The children can leave an activity at any time.

—There is opportunity to rest when tired and eat when hungry.

—I found it very interesting to watch the older children teaching the younger children good “beach manners”.

—It was fascinating to watch children, who supposedly have short attention spans, work intensely on the same project for and entire day and ( sometimes) for several days.

—In one particular incident, I was very impressed to watch an older girl ( about 11) spend an entire afternoon teaching a younger child ( about 7) how to do somersaults.

Maybe if schools were more like beaches we would see more learning, and genuinely healthy socialization. But..Hey! That's what homeschooling is!

This is ridiculous. None of the kids I bullied in school turned out to be psycho killers.

Guess what, idiot - I had the same things said to me in Catholic school back in the 60s and 70s...........

I am so sick and tired of your freaking bullying - and that is EXACTLY what your idiocy is. My 14 year old has long known what you are and she is the one that called you a bully - and did so more than 2 years ago.

Do not ever again include me in one of your spam pings. I have never hit ‘abuse’ on you in the past, but you are pushing your luck with the limits of my tolerance to your intolerance.

I will save you the keystrokes - yes I personally attacked you and called you an idiot - because you are. For years you have called me an unfit parent and I finally realized you are the one with the problem - not me. live with it.

I always taught my kids not to bully other kids, but if someone bullied them to kick the crap out of them.

I just spoke with the President... what can we do about this right-wing bullying?

We'll work up... a Number 6 on 'em!

Fantastic! I cannot wait.. to tell the President about this!

You know, Hedley, if you only had to play golf and go to fundraiser... this won't be a bad gig--

The first message needs to go to school administrators.

Just like the owner of a business has a responsibility to make sure the workplace is free of harassment, so too do school administrators have the responsibility to make sure the school is free of bully harassment.

Once again the message is directed to the wrong place.

This is a personal insult. I do not contact the moderators with these insults. It is so much better for them to remain for all to see. They say so much more about the poster than they do me.

As for you request. I will try to remember it and, If I remember, I will honor it. However...You and your wishes are not on my most urgent list. If you do not want me on your ping list, then perhaps you should not ping mine. Here is your latest unsolicited ping to me. Should I accuse you of bullying me? I won't because, as a mature adult, I realize that if I step into the kitchen I should fully expect that it will be hot there.

As for the “bullying” perhaps you should be ranting at CBSnews for reporting on it.

By the way, “ gunsequalsfreedom” makes a good point in post #10. It is the government school administrators responsibility to provide for a safe and harassment free environment. They should be held to the same standard as any manager of any business. Why should **children** be made to suffer abuse that would win millions of dollars for an adult and jail time for the perp?

Its only because they haven’t found you yet! Just kidding. It used to be that kids were taught to stand up to bullies, and if there was a fight you at least won respect if nothing else. Bullies tend to move on to someone else once you stand up to them. Every kid needs to undergo a certain amount of seasoning to learn how to deal with the diseased world around them.

I agree. My child went to a Christian school and was a victim of “mean girsl” for most of her school career. I spoke with school officials and they did nothing. When I asked my daughter if she wanted to go to another private school, she declined because she was #1 in her class and wanted to be valedictorian and show those girls up. She now teaches in a public school and is very happy. She is salt and light to the teachers, parents , and students.
My son witnessed what his sister was going through, went to a public voc-tech high school and flourished! He now teaches at that same school and leads by example.
Not all public schools are evil, not all private schools are good!!!

It is malpractice for teachers not to provide a safe and harassment free environment.

If other professionals and businesses can get sued for failing to do so in their practices, offices, and workplaces, then so should teachers and principals. They should also lose their licenses just as other professionals do.

Where are the malpractice class action lawyers when we need them?

I totally disagree with you. Parents are who need to be addressed. Bullies are raised that way and that comes from the home, not the school.

I graduated HS in 1978 and had been dealing with bullies from the time I was in 1st grade - and I was never in public school. My daughter had to deal with a bully in elementary school. That child is/was a bully because it is all she knew - her mother is one.

Not all public schools are evil,
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Government schools are evil for several reasons:

1) They are godless and at their best were never more than generically lukewarm in their Protestant worldview. What does Christ do with the lukewarm? He spits them out of His mouth! The taxpayers are **forced** to pay for the establishment of a government godless worldview. And...The children who attend WILL and are FORCED to think and reason godlessly just to cooperate in the godless classroom, read the godless textbooks, and do their godless homework.

2) Government schools are a single-payer socialist entitlement. The risk of having our nation's children attend these schools is they risk learning to be comfortable with single-payer socialism and comfortable with the government forcing them to use it. Why wouldn't they? If the voting mob can give them tuition free schooling, why can't the voting mob give them lots of free goodies and compel them to use it.

3) All Prussian model schools must suppress speech, press, assembly, expression of religion, and all schools have a non-neutral religious worldview that is either godless or God-centered. When government schools suppress First Amendment Rights, the children risk learning to be comfortable with government tyranny. This is evil!

4) All schools have a worldview that is not, and never can be religiously, culturally, or political neutral. Such a state is impossible in the mind of any sentient being. Government schools are **not** and never have been neutral in content or consequences. It is evil to force taxpayers to pay for the **establishment** of a religiously NON-neutral worldview in the minds of our nation's future voters. In fact it is evil.

This is a variation of “Bullying is good for children.”

Well...If bullying soooooo good then why do adults get millions awarded to them in court, perps sent to prison, professionals lose their licenses and sued for malpractice, and business given huge fines for the same type of physical and emotional harassment?

Unbelievable!

Your children sound wonderful! Good for them and good for you!

Your kids sound like many of the teachers my daughter has had. I thank goodness or teachers such as them!

Be proud Mom! You’ve earned it.

The biggest bullies in my old school were the nuns and the priest. Public school was a much nicer place.

Too many parents move into a district without first checking out the schools and then blame everyone but themselves. If they don’t get involved with the school, then they are part of the problem.
