Straight out of red-state Texas and a free-market mentality, restaurateur Brad Bailey is trying to get Republicans to endorse a radical idea: Let businesses hire foreigners, even ones here illegally, if they can’t find American workers. His target is the Republican National Convention, where he is hoping to win over the most conservative of conservatives to an immigration plan that Bailey says makes sense for businesses and, ultimately, for the GOP.
Much to the surprise of many politicians, the idea won the support of the Texas Republican Party at the state convention in June. It probably helped matters that the plan also accommodated two top priorities for immigration hard-liners: anticounterfeit Social Security cards and an end to automatic citizenship for all children born to immigrants on U.S. soil. The proposal also includes the obligatory nod to border security, complete with explanation point: “The U.S. border must be secured immediately!”
Now Bailey is traversing the country attempting to secure support among Republican opinion leaders who will convene in Tampa, Fla., next month to nominate former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president. The Texan is well aware that he faces major political hurdles at a time when Republican candidates endure a public skewering for a mere whisper that undocumented immigrants should be given legal status. The mission statement of his nonprofit group, The Hard Work Clean Hands Initiative, states as one of its goals, “To sensitize conservatives about the rhetoric on immigration.”
“Privately, elected officials will tell you, ‘Hey, we understand the problem. Deporting 11 million people is impossible.’ But when they come out publicly,” Bailey said, “they are retaliated against.”

As president, Mitt Romney will make the system for bringing in temporary agricultural workers and other seasonal workers functional for both employers and immigrants. We should get rid of unnecessary requirements that delay issuance of a visa, and we should speed the processing of applications.
Does that sound like Romney wants more or less agricultural and "seasonal" (i.e., cheap) labor?
There have always been seasonal migrant ag workers. I don’t buy the bull that we need to speed them up.
As it is, migrants in Michigan are being fed and housed at taxpayer expense because the drought wiped out crops. Seems to me they should be migrating to where there is work.
If Romney hired them to perform menial campaign duties, would that qualify as “seasonal” work?
I got a better idea. “Businessmen” who knowingly employ illegals should go to prison... for a LONG time.
Chamber of Commerce Republicans are in favor of illegal immigration because of the cheap labor; Democrats want their votes.
Truly an unholy alliance.

The reality is that the “GOP” has “endorsed” hiring illegal workers for decades now.
They just cloak their intentions behind code words created for public consumption.
Thus, we got proffered such near-disasters as “comprehensive immigration reform” so that those same hidden intentions could sleazily be transformed into public policy.
Eventually they’re going to prevail, and 30-40 million illegals are going to be jammed down our throats. I trust them as far as I can throw them, and at my age, that ain’t far.
By the way, there’s been a lot of fawning over Paul Ryan the last few days. But an article in the Washington Times a few days’ back, claims he is a supporter of much of the same “immigration reform” that conservatives hate:

No. Why doesn't he lobby to end food stamps? He'll can get all the "workers" he can hire if they have to work or starve.
You and I have different memories. I started watching politics in ‘52 in Seattle area. Then college and adult life in IL. The same Republicans/ conservatives who championed right-to-work and Hayek, VonMises, Friedman, Hazlitt held the position “Let the free market decide”.
Historically, it was the Union Dems such as Cesar Chavez of the UFW who led close-the-border; don’t let them in movement.
An interesting part of the move ‘2016’ is when DeSouza quotes the Reagan staffers: We dont’ care abour your immigration status; just if you are a Reaganite.
That was true of almost all Reaganites and Goldwaterites during the 60s and 70s leading up to ‘80.
As I’ve said before, Pat Buchanan was seen as the odd-man-out, the voice in the wilderness of the prophet nobody was following...until after 911 when everything flipped.
