WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's campaign offered Mitt Romney a deal: If he releases a total of five years of tax returns, Obama's team won't criticize him for not releasing any more. Romney's campaign quickly rejected the offer.

Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina made the offer in a letter Friday to Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades.

He does not have a job like most of us so the tax percentage he pays will be on investments which is taxed lower than regular income I believe. Just like Warren Buffet. There is no wealth tax yet otherwise he would have paid alot more. I really could care less how much he paid in taxes.

No, not a good idea. Obama will then release forged copies of his college transcripts, like he did his birth certificate, and then Romney will be obliged to turn over 5 years of tax returns. That would be a trap for Romney.

I’ll tack on a 2nd bad idea... I’d rather Romney did release the taxes, looked right into the cameras, and said, “As with ALL Americans this country provided me with opportunity. Not a hand-out, but an opportunity to prosper if I sought out to earn it. I worked hard, took risks, maybe even got lucky here and there.. and I made a buttload of money. LOTS of it. I’m rich as hell! I damn sure didn’t want to pay a lot of taxes on it, who in their right mind would? When only 1/2 of American’s pay ANYTHING and when so much of Federal spending goes to such stupid, wasteful things it would be equally wise to just toss my earnings down the toilet. Tell me all about the GSA blowing money on a lavish party and I’ll tell you there’s Americans that will pay taxes their entire lifetime and still not put much of a dent into the cost of that party. Tell me about billions going to American hating HAMAS, of millions to fund abortions in CHINA, or tell me about failed stimulus programs... and then come crying to me about not having enough of my hard earned dollars. Screw you!”

But very fortunately for Mr. Romney... my career choice doesn’t involve writing speaches or public policy statements.

Mitt should call a press conference, and with a solemn face say...”It’s true. I’m here to admit that Harry Reid is right. I did not pay ant taxes for 10 years.......from 1947 to 1957. Now shut up.”

Donald J. Trump ‏@realDonaldTrump

.@MittRomney shouldn't give additional tax returns until @BarackObama gives his passport records, college records & applications...

The chances that Zero will release documents that show that he denied that he was an American citizen are nil. So there is no chance of this "trade" ever happening.

If Romney releases them at all, it should be as PDF files, exhibiting the same kind of layering and evidence of tampering that Obama's BC does. The sections that have been tampered with should have information that agrees with what is on the physical documents. If questioned Romney should admit they were tampered with, and then offer to produce the physical documents for comparison - provided Obama does the same for his records.

All Romney needs to say is this: "Over the last three years, this President has shown no compunction whatsoever about using the IRS and the Department of Justice as his personal town sheriff; endlessly harassing his opponents while letting guilty people go free, all the while stonewalling and hiding any evidence of their crimes.

"If there was the slightest evidence of impropriety, I would have been on their target list. I paid the entirety of my legal obligations to the Federal taxing authorities, and there is not one American alive -- including the President -- who pays one dime more than the law requires."

Romney ran for President in 2008, and having lost the nomination set his sights on 2012. Do you think he is stupid enough to to have tax problems when he has been preparing to run for president since at least 2004?

I’m sure Obama already has access to Romney’s tax records—the IRS is part of the executive branch—and knows if there is something in there which can be used in political attacks. The problem is how to leak it to the press without creating an uproar over how the information got leaked. Maybe that will happen nearer the election—then Holder can appoint a reliable Obama supporter to investigate the leak.

You nailed it. Exactly what Romney should say since he can’t bring himself to pin down Obama on his college transcripts and where he got his money to pay for college and Rezko’s house.

What? Does anyone think that the ‘Progressives’ will object to a leak? There really doesn’t have to be anything big in Romney’s tax return, but if the opposition can plant the seeds of something evil, that’s all that’s necessary. Alinsky would be proud.
Such a study of propaganda, surely they studied at the Reichpropagandaleitung.

But the MSM would completely ignore these items and any other release that hurts their Man. Ultimately, any deal with the 0bama camp is a losing proposition. Romney cannot win on this issue and he needs to RIGHT NOW stop talking about it. These are taunts, and the best way to fight a taunting enemy is to ignore him.

I can just see the Obama campaign now. They’ll run a commercial with “It’s true. I’m here to admit that Harry Reid Reid is right,. I did not pay any taxes for 10 years.” Period. The “from 1947 to 1957” will never make the cut.

I don’t know why Romney issued the 13% statement.

I don't know how that's possible. Harry Reid said someone told him Mittens hasn't paid taxes in 10 years.

There had to be some reason but it did seem to come out of no where.

This so obviously a trap. Obama's campaign itself might "drop" the issue but you can bet his party and the "independent" PACs will not.

Paul Ryan's 2010 & 2011 returns were released to the Milwaukee newspaper. He and his wife paid over 20% in 2011 and around 15% in 2010.
