Obama Camp Wants Petition Signatures to Get Romney to Release Tax Returns

Bridget Johnson

The Obama campaign is asking supporters to sign a letter to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney release “just five years of tax returns.”

In an email to the BarackObama.com list, campaign manager Jim Messina noted the letter he sent Friday morning to Romney’s campaign manager, vowing to get off Romney’s back about the returns if the documents were produced. The Romney camp brushed off Messina’s move.

Now Messina has converted his letter into an online petition of sorts.

“According to the one full year of returns he has released, Romney paid 13.9% in taxes on his income. Thursday, he said he went back and looked, and has never paid less than 13% over the last ten years. Now we’re asking him to put his money where his mouth is,” Messina wrote.

“It is absolutely relevant for us to ask how much a presidential candidate paid in taxes, if he sheltered his money or tried to get out of paying taxes at all, why he started — and continues to own — a corporation offshore in Bermuda, why he keeps his finances offshore in the Cayman Islands, and why he opened a Swiss bank account,” he continued.

In addition to being invited to sign the petition, supporters were reminded in a P.S. to open their wallets: “Election Day is closer than you think — make a donation to fund this campaign in the time we have left.”

I want Obummer’s college application.

I’m betting he applied as a foreign exchange student from Indonesia.

Purely a morale play at this point, keeping the base busy doing paperwork so they won’t notice they’re losing — badly.

Call Obama’s bluff. Tell him to release all his collage transcripts along with every Justice Dept Fast & Furious document.

And, let’s have a national discussion about intel leaks.

"I agree with you but I have one concern. Obama certainly knows exactly what’s in Romney’s returns. Since they’re private by law he can’t even leak what’s in them, but he knows, and believes it’s win.win. If Romney releases them, Axelrod & co bash Romney with the contents. if Romney doen’t release them, then Axelrod with the Media bash Romney for a coverup. Right now this is his only play."

They don't really care what's in there. They probably show a nominal multi-millionaire's return. Romney is probably correct when he says he paid 13%.

What Bobo wants to do, with the aid of the MSM, is flood the zone for weeks with something that has nothing to do about the election, in order to take attention away from 44 STATES RISING UNEMPLOYMENT AND A PENDING DOUBLE_DIP RECESSION...

I can see the headlines now: Romney found to be rich. Paid his taxes legally and on time. Rich guy diversified his money across industries, trusts, and currencies.

Film at 11.

Mitt's problem is that these tax returns are going to be given to CNN, MSNBC, and PBS three hours before the first debate.

That's a certainty.

How best to proceed is debatable, the fact that Obama has the returns and plans to disclose them is not.

I post on a liberal site a lot more than I do here. There are two posters there that, no matter what the subject of the thread, post that they want to see Romney’s tax records and try to sabotage the thread.

“Mitt’s problem is that these tax returns are going to be given to CNN, MSNBC, and PBS three hours before the first debate.”

I suspect that you are correct and that’s why Messina changed his demand to only five years - and specified 2007-2010, in addition to the 2010-2011 Romney has agreed to show. My guess is that in 2006 (the 2007 return), Romney made a small donation to an organization such as Planned Parenthood. Once he started running for President in 2007, he realized how badly that would be taken by conservatives and he hasn’t done anything like that since.

Obama clearly already has the info from the returns but he can’t figure out a way to leak it without getting into trouble. As the election draws closer, he will get more desperate. I think you are correct that the info will hit some time in early October - the question is will it destroy Romney or will he play it to his advantage by portraying the President as the pathetic loser that he is?

Let’s see, a petition signed by people who no way in Hell would ever vote for Romney. Means nothing.

Same as the USAPtooey/Gallup poll that oversampled Democrats and never bothered to pose similar questions about Obama’s suppressed paperwork.

The peanut gallery is peeing in their pants.

Ok, so how long will it take to get a petition going for the Obummer to release his Social Security records, passport records, college records, etc.???

You'll be called a "birfer".

Meanwhile, the "taxers" continue their smear campaign without media challenge.

I want Holder - or someone else in Congress - to investigate Harry Reid and his little imaginary friends.
