Say goodnight, Todd Akin
Washington Post ^

Posted on 08/19/2012 8:01:18 PM PDT by Arthurio

No wonder Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill wanted to run against Rep. Todd Akin, even investing in his GOP primary victory two weeks ago by spending $2 million on ads that described him as “too conservative.’’ Missouri Republicans saw that as a plus, just as she’d hoped. But after his Sunday comment that “legitimate rape” rarely leads to pregnancy, even some in the GOP are calling for him to step aside.

The Republican lawmaker was trying to explain why he opposes abortion in cases of rape, but instead marched straight into the tar pits, where he will hopefully serve as a warning to future candidates that the reproductive info gleaned at summer camp may not hold up that well in TV interviews half a century hence.

Rape as a result of sex by force “is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

He worked out fine as one of the most conservative congressmen in Washington for 12 years.

Yeah, Sarah endorsed Sarah Steelman who was much better than the RINO Brunner and this Akin guy, who McCaskill was rooting on to win the the primary in the three-way race.

If Paul Ryan can talk honestly about Medicare, then maybe some other Republican politicians can talk honestly about baby butchering.

Real conservatives can talk truth about abortion and phony rape excuse for baby killing without messing their pants.

I see a lacks of “non-wets” lately on this forum!

This guy was handpicked by Huckabee. Should tell you something.

On top of everything else, he’s a bigtime earmarker. “Principled conservative” my eye.

He meant “PREGNANCY” as a result of rape. IT’s really rare, and when reported, is non-existant because of the rape kit.

WTF is legitimate rape?

A legitimate rape is a rape, as opposed to consensual sex that someone afterwards claims to have been a rape. It's a poor choice of words, but it is understandable.

We’re here but its kind of pointless to interfere with the wolfpack when they’re in full frenzy.

Legitimate rape would be forcible rape not including statutory or some cases of date rape.
As a former speaker for Right to Life, I understood what he meant. Poor word choice but he is correct.

I’ve read that Missouri is a strongly pro-life state, but even so, I bet the majority in Missouri favor exceptions for abortion in cases of rape.

Still, that position could be easily put up against McCaskill’s even more extreme support of abortion on demand for any reason throughout a pregnancy, imposed by the Sup Court w/o any say from the people of Missouri.

That’s a contrast of views and positions I’d take. I would welcome that fight. But Akin has ruined that, and given an eager media a reason to make this race about rape and abortion. Akin has turned a likely GOP pickup to a likely Democrat hold. Even if Romney wins, the chance of confirming conservative judges to the Sup Court just became a lot harder thanks to Akin.

I agree with you, people should just absolutely slam the Missouri GOP’s phone-lines and email all day tomorrow, as well as calling the Akin campaign and demanding he step down, if he doesn’t, this controversy will follow him all the way to election day and you’ll wind up with McCaskill for another 6 years, guaranteed.

What he said was atrocious and indefensible, if George Allen severely crippled his election chances because of one single comment, this guy completely obliterated them.

No wonder McCaskill was funding ad’s supporting this guy, she knew the caliber of fool she was dealing with clearly.

No, this is beyond the pale. I can’t see how anyone could support this idiot after what he said. He needs to be gone, like tomorrow. Not only will be bring himself down if he stays, he’ll bring other Republicans down by association, his comments couldn’t have anymore neatly fit into the stereotype that the left has made of “white Republican males” when it comes to women and reproduction if this incompetent had tried to do so.

Guarantee at the presidential debates you’ll have at least a couple questions now about rape and pregnancy, another chance for Obama to change the subject away from the economy.

So would you rather have Steelman or McCaskill? Because with his comments, this guy just made himself unelectable...in Missouri and everywhere else.
