Say goodnight, Todd Akin
Washington Post ^

Posted on 08/19/2012 8:01:18 PM PDT by Arthurio

No wonder Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill wanted to run against Rep. Todd Akin, even investing in his GOP primary victory two weeks ago by spending $2 million on ads that described him as “too conservative.’’ Missouri Republicans saw that as a plus, just as she’d hoped. But after his Sunday comment that “legitimate rape” rarely leads to pregnancy, even some in the GOP are calling for him to step aside.

The Republican lawmaker was trying to explain why he opposes abortion in cases of rape, but instead marched straight into the tar pits, where he will hopefully serve as a warning to future candidates that the reproductive info gleaned at summer camp may not hold up that well in TV interviews half a century hence.

Rape as a result of sex by force “is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Too.Late.

The damage has already been done, he needs to go, the firestorm has already started and if this guy stays, its going to envelop a lot of other Republican candidates in this needless controversy started by this fool. What he said really can’t be explained a way, and the leftist media is unforgiving when it comes to gaffe’s by Republicans, they will never let anyone forget about this until November, if this guy drops out, the damage can be minimized and perhaps a Senate seat can be saved, but make no mistake about it, the damage has been done.

Which is why people need to call the Missouri GOP like crazy tomorrow, email, contact his campaign, let him know that its time to go. The media firestorm has just begun and will be picking up full speed ahead tomorrow. He needs to step down for the good of his party and country.

Maybe he'll try the Trent Lott apology tour...go on Oprah and talk about how some of his best friends are women...like that.

Sorry, but not that rare, about 5%. And his statement “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” is without any medical foundation whatsoever. It’s also incredibly offensive to any woman who has been raped and gotten pregnant as a result.

Unk, I agree. I think you loyal Republican should stick with Mr Akin all the way November. We all know that Sarah Steelman is just a pawn for the trial lawyers, the unions and hell, the railroads and probably Tamney Hall. Besides we all know how stupid Sarah Palin is.

Once again: I think we can safely say that the Democrats hold Missouri.

please see my tag. Thanks

Poor word choice but he is correct.

Correct about the part that if a woman is actually raped, her body will prevent her from getting pregnant?

You don’t know Missouri and you don’t know how strong his support is here. None of the bedwetters out there know either and don’t vote in Missouri.

So you are still holding a grudge because Missourians didn’t elect Sara Palin’s select candidate??? Get over it.

Another 4 years of Obama and nobody to the right of Bernie Sanders would be electable by 2016. Conservatives will be tarred and feathered so badly from Obama’s bully pulpit that the philosophy would be almost as condenmed as Communism was during the 1950s and 60s (minus about 10 or 20% of the population).

What I mean is, before this new soft on communism era, at least 90% of Americans opposed the Communist philosophy.

By 2016 (if Obama wins in 2012) the same could happen to conservatism except 70%-80% opposition.

And don't give me the “well, Obama will fail and most Americans will be without a job and with no money” I say, exactly, and that's what the left wants. BIG GOVERNMENT will be seen by most as the savior.

Stay home if you wish, but you're not helping the cause of Conservatism. You're just participating in moving “center” more to the left.

The media firestorm has just begun and will be picking up full speed ahead tomorrow.
The very term "media firestorm" should give you pause.

A "media firestorm" is liberal speak for a contrived event with social media and the mainstream media fanning the flames.

Just look up the instances where and how social "media firestorm" is used and think about what you just wrote!

Dance, baby, dance. That drum is beating a hypnotic beat.

>> “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

How is this statement “too conservative”? The characterization makes no sense.

I ask all those hyperventilating, what is illegitimate rape?

I imagine Akin meant to say, “In the case of actual rape, the female body has ways...”

It was an ignorant thing to say, like we’re all of a bunch of idiot Luddites. Anyone who has taken a first semester introductory biology course in college knows that this guy is full of it.

And the thing is....WHY? He was up by 10, he could have talked about how much he loves puppies and long walks on the beach and he could have won easily considering the caliber of candidate he’s opposing. Now he just flipped everything upside down and single-handedly revived McCaskill.

“Hopefully MO State Republicans are talking right now convincing this moron to step aside and finding a new candidate.”

Oh my goodness, yes.

Wasn’t this seat pretty locked up for the pubbies? Wasn’t McCaskill toast? (Sorry if I misspelled her name, I’m really way too tired to check right now.)

Hey, you know, the guy might even be correct in what he says. I get it. I’m pro-life. But Politics is “the art of the possible” and losing is “the art of sticking your foot in your mouth so hard you can walk on your *ssh*le”

That was just an immensely stupid thing to say.

Here in colorado we had a full fledged melt down in 2010. The (R) gubanatorial candidate was a loser. wound up missing a chance to get the governorship, and the rino’s killed ken buck’s chance to knock off a ‘rat senator.

Don’t make the same mistake missorah...

I do think Sara Palin is overrated by a lot of conservatives. Other than being good on the Second Amendment, I just don’t get it.

But she may have been right on this one. Akin has turned what should have been an easy victory into something else. I hope you (Uncle Chip) are right about his level of support, because I doubt he’ll step aside. I think it’s more likely though that he will stay in and become this year’s Sharon Angle; a Republican who loses to the most vulnerable Democrat incumbent in the Senate.

Keep sipping your Kool-Aid, all the way through another 6 years of Senator McCaskill. Both Nate Silver and Scott Rasmussen have stated that this guy pretty much screwed himself. Politically, his campaign is finished, he should step down and allow Steelman to take the reigns and actually have a shot at winning a very winnable seat.

Unfortunately, this isn't just about Missouri. This is about comments that reflect poorly on the entire Republican Party, in a campaign season where the Dems are pandering heavily to women voters. We can't afford for this guy to stick his foot in his mouth again and fire up the female Dem base.

Just like Trent Lott couldn't help himself, this guy needs to be cut loose before he does it again.

Bullshit.

To Hell with the practice of discarding Conservatives because of gaffes, off-color jokes, obscenities, misunderstandings. And to Hell with the spineless jackwagons that don’t have the courage to stand up to the popular character assassination reserved exclusively for the Right.

Real conservatives can talk truth about abortion and phony rape excuse for baby killing without messing their pants.

I'm not sure he was talking about phony rape excuses for abortion when he used the term legitimate rapes...I'm not sure what he meant. I've seen two differnet numbers on the incidence of pregnancy from rape. The CDC says about 5%. Several pro-life sources claim it is far less - between 2-400 hundred a year. Not sure what to believe.

What he said was not very smart. I doubt too many women use rape as an excuse for abortion any more no matter what he meant. He sounds like he's a committed pro-lifer, but he needs to watch his words. Using legitimate and rape in a phrase just does not make sense to most people, especially women.

Regardless, I'm not calling for him to step down.
