Tensions between Japan and China close to boiling point after Japanese activists scramble
DM ^

* The dramatic assault by a dozen Japanese nationalists infuriated China, which issued an official protest to Tokyo

* It sparked a number of anti-Japanese rallies across China

Tensions between Japan and China threatened to boil over yesterday in a row over a group of disputed islands.

Around ten right-wing Japanese activists swam ashore the main island in the Senkaku archipelago and raised the national flag. They carried out the stunt to call on China to give up its claim to the islands, which are under Japanese control.

Infuriated, Beijing issued an immediate rebuke as thousands of Chinese took to the streets in cities across the country in protest at the stunt. The uninhabited islands, which the Chinese call Diaoyu and Taiwan also lays a claim to, are hotly disputed because they lie close to rich gas fields and are situated in a vital shipping lane in the East China Sea.

The activists, who belong to a group whose name translates as ‘Hang in there, Japan’, travelled to the islands with 150 other people in a flotilla, which had ostensibly set out to commemorate Japanese citizens who died nearby in World War II.

The pro-Japan activists arrived in the island chain at dawn today on a flotilla of boats carrying a total of 150 people.

If Japan were smart, they would use this hyper-nationalism promoted by the Chinese Communists against them. The Chinese Gov’t may allow, once, public demonstrations against Japan, but they are extremely wary of such demonstrations getting out of control.

Perhaps a few more minor irritations such as landing a few people on the Diaoyutais might encourage Chinese citizens to go out on the street and protest.

See how quickly the Chinese Gov’t clamps down....

The nationalist "sound truck" people got themselves a boat and sailed to Senkaku Jima.

Four Seasons - Let’s hang on!
[ Album: Sing For You ]

There ain’t no good in our goodbye-in’
True love takes a lot of tryin’
Oh im cryin’

Let’s hang on to what we’ve got
Don’t let go, girl; we’ve got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
Hang on, hang on, hang on to what we got
Dooh doo, dooh doo, dooh doo

You say you’re gonna go and call it quits
Gonna chuck it all and break our love to bits
I wish you’d never said it, just breakin’ up, forget it
Oh no, we’lll both regret it, just breakin’ up, and you’ll regret it

That little chip of diamond on your hand
Ain’t a fortune, baby, but you know it stands
A love to tie and bind ya, just for your love, the love babe
We just can’t leave behind us, only the love, just for the love babe
Baby, don’t you go
Baby, oh no no
Think it over and stay-ay

Let’s hang on to what we’ve got
Don’t let go, girl; we’ve got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
Hang on, hang on, hang on, to what we’ve got
Dooh doo, dooh doo, dooh doo

There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do
I’d pay the price to get in good with you
Give me a second turnin’
Then patch it up, come get it
Don’t cool off when Im burnin’
Then patch it up, you won’t regret it

You’ve got me cryin’, dyin’ at your door
Don’t shut me out, ooh let me in once more
Your arms I need to hold you
Then open up and mend it
Your heart, oh girl I love you
Just open up, then you will mend it
Baby, don’t you go
Baby, oh no no

Let’s hang on to what we’ve got
Don’t let go, girl; we’ve got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
Hang on, hang on, hang on, to what we’ve got
Dooh doo, dooh doo, dooh doo

Hangin’ on to what we got
(let’s hang on)
Let’s hang on to what we got
(we’re hangin’ on)
Hangin’ on to what we got
(let’s hang on)
Let’s hang on to what we got
(we’re hangin’ on)
Hangin’ on to what we got
Let’s hang on-on-on

Let’s hang on to what we’ve got
Don’t let go, girl; we’ve got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
Hang on, hang on, hang on, to what we’ve got
Dooh doo, dooh doo, dooh doo

The Japanese can barely fend off the “Rainbow Warrior”.I don’t give them much chance against the “People’s Navy”.

Let's don't get mis-led here, we have watched a kinky change in “rules of engagement” for our forces, if Japan and China go to it you will see unrestricted conflict at it's ugliest. They are not going to be jumping around in tutus and patting each other on the butt.

Commenter from DM:

Fools! These Islands are clearly the property of Argentina! They are hereby named The Malvinas II. Whilst we won’t take any sort of military action you can bet your bottom dollar we won’t stop complaining about it until both sides get terrifically bored and hand them over.

It’s about the undersea oil fields, and nothing else. Thanks traumer.

Oh, for Pete’s sake, this has nothing to do with trade with China and everything to do with the fact that Obama is sitting on his hands while the world falls apart.

There is an article in the WSJ that explains what is going on with all the islands in the South China Sea. The Chinese are claiming them all, even the ones that have long been considered possessions of other countries, like Japan or Vietnam.

China has recently sold oil leases around islands that are in the economic sphere of Vietnam. China established what they call a prefecture for all the islands, sent in 45 people to act as the legislature and a garrison of soldiers to back them up. There aren’t very many people on these islands, mostly uninhabited, but the treasure is in under sea minerals and the control of trade routes.

Obama does nothing.

No, I give credit where it’s due. First to our labor unions, for “sticking it to THE MAN” and making it next to impossible to manufacture here. In close second are the lawmakers that both enable the unions (by allowing them to exist), and then use regulations (particularly environmental, by also the tort system) to keep their feet on the throats of companies that do figure out a way to stay alive.

If that garbage were cleaned up, Walmart, Target, and the rest would find US good MUCH MORE competitive.

It’s amazing that a few protestors can get Nations’ panties into a war twist these days. We live in interesting times.

Chinese expansionism is becoming increasingly egregious; can it be very much longer before they start military actions along their borders targeted at India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, or Japan?

This would be like, a dozen Tea Partiers raise a US flag in Mexico, and the whole country of Mexico gets bent out of shape.

Touchy, touchy, touchy.

Yes I am aware - I follow the SE Asia events.
Still - the US $$$ helped China to build the military monster.
