G.O.P. Trying to Oust Akin From Race for Rape Remarks
The New York Times ^ | August 20, 2012 | JONATHAN WEISMAN and JOHN ELIGON

WASHINGTON — Fearing that a seat crucial to winning a Senate majority could slip away, the national Republican establishment on Monday unleashed a furious campaign to drive Representative Todd Akin, the party’s newly selected nominee, out of the race against Missouri’s Democratic senator.

Amid an uproar over provocative comments on rape and abortion that Mr. Akin made in an interview broadcast on Sunday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee declared that it would withdraw financial and organizational support for Mr. Akin, including $5 million in advertising already reserved for the fall. ...

Crossroads GPS, a Republican advocacy group that had already spent more than $5 million to weaken Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri, considered the Senate’s most endangered incumbent, announced that it was withdrawing from the state. ...

But Senator John Cornyn of Texas, chairman of the Senate campaign committee, personally asked Mr. Akin to step aside, a senior Republican Senate campaign aide said.

“Over the next 24 hours, Congressman Akin should carefully consider what is best for him, his family, the Republican Party and the values that he cares about and has fought for throughout his career in public service,” Mr. Cornyn said in a statement. ...

Will he do the RIGHT thing on Tuesday or put his ego first and become an boat anchor around the GOP's neck?

I try so hard to think about my words before I utter them.

But unfettered the utterances do sometimes leak out.

All I can say is we need to keep the pressure on this fool.

I will also say I thought that article was pretty fair, all things considered.

Thanks for posting it.

Sounds like the “Akin Drop Out” people are the same as “Don’t bring up Obama Birth Certificate” people

In the long run, the GOP and the conservative movement will pay for liberal stupidity

Akin still has the lead in the polls....instead of PhonyCons trying to run him out...time for Real Conservatives to back him

Can he win now? Who knows. Everyone knows that he put his foot in his mouth bigTIME. Having said that however, Repubs need this Senate seat. McPelosiCaskill must be removed from office. So, if Akin goes away, who can step up and PLAY?

Considering what the GOP did to Tom DeLay, this guy doesn’t stand a chance.

yeah, because we all really really want to talk about "legitimate rape" and abortion for the next 2 1/2 months. That's sure to help us take the senate.

When the RAT buffoon Biden goes on a tear you won’t hear the RAT party demanding he drop out. Only works one way.

Akin is toast, even if what he said WAS TRUE....

He forgot that most people are idiots, and don’t have the knowledge on the subject that he has. He assumed his audience knew what HE already knows to be true, and you can’t do that.

The result is an inconvenient soundbite being played OVER,and OVER, and OVER by a biased, enemy media, intent on wrecking any Republican. CBS evening News spent EIGHT FULL MINUTES on this tonight, establishing the meme, and drilling it home to the sheeple.

Yet these are the SAME media idiots who SUPPORTED Whoopi’s “Well, it’s not RAPE rape” comments regarding Roman Polanski, just a two short years ago.

I agree 100%!

He needs to stay in and tell these republican elites to cram it up their cram hole. What the hell is wrong with the Republican party? With friends like that who needs enemies. And just what does the Republican party think this "high road" charade is going to get them? The guy just used some bad phrasing. Not one person with two brain cells thinks he was saying rape was a legitimate act or that women that were raped never get pregnant. Do people not understand the English language anymore? Good grief the populace has been dumbed down!

I say it's nation wide Akin support day, Chic-Fil-A style!

We can't let the media and the spineless repubics destroy our candidates !

I can’t remember the last time I so emphatically agreed with a noobian princeling.

Missourians who would vote for Akins even if he had (Biden-like) mentioned a “’Morning-After’ Pill for men” will definitely vote for him.
Those inclined to vote for Akin will know what he meant and go ahead and vote for him.
Those who can’t/won’t figure out what he really meant are either yellow dog Democrats, GOP-e or won’t vote at all.

The GOP-e doesn’t give `Show Me’ state residents any credit, but that’s how they treat most of flyover country so feck `em.
So, I’m voting Romney but it’s amusing to see all the GOP-e faithful toadies here s***ing bricks over this conservative acting human ... when Obama makes a gaffe a week and Joe entertains us every other day.
The MSM is pushing your buttons: Get over yourselves.

Go Akins: The GOP-e long and the short and the tall—feck `em all—and when you win I’m sure you will vote with conservatives, not necessarily the Republicrats or Demoblicans.

“when Obama makes a gaffe a week and Joe entertains us every other day.”

Those gaffes don’t get EIGHT FULL MINUTES on the CBS Evening News, Like Akin did tonight.

Or on E!, The Daily Show, Saturday Night Live, Colbert Report, CNN, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, NPR, Pacifica, The Washington Post, or the New York Times.

In fact, they rarely get mentioned by them, at all.

He who controls the media, controls THE MEME. We forget that, at our own peril.

Akin is a goner--especially once GOP headquarters pulled their financial and political support for him. The New York Times actually got to reporting this story a tad late....
