TAMPA (CBS Tampa/AP) Tampas mayor warns that the Republican National Convention could be canceled if Tropical Storm Isaac heads for the city.
Mayor Bob Buckhorn told CNN that he is more concerned about the safety of his people than holding the convention.
Absolutely were prepared to call it off, Buckhorn explained to CNN. I mean, human safety and human life trumps politics. I think the RNC recognizes that.
Buckhorn also added that the city has contingency plans ready in case of an emergency.
I dont think its going to be a factor in this particular convention, Buckhorn told CNN. But we are prepared in the event that it is.
Isaac could threaten Florida as early as next week.

Mayor is a Democrat and a graduate of Penn State.
Only the GOP would schedule their once in four years convention in FL in high hurricane season.
The police and other city workers are his responsibility.
No point risking lives if an evacuation is necessary.
I'm sure the GOP would have the necessary ingenuity to reorganize the convention after the dems. have theirs.
With Willard as the nominee, might as well roll it into the Democrat Convention.
The Republicans have been lucky -both of Nixon’s were in August in Miami Beach, and have also held conventions in Houston and New Orleans in August.
Democrats did one in Miami Beach in 1972 but have generally avoided coastal southern cities.
This could be the last time a major party holds a convention in hurricane country in hurricane season.
NOAA is predicting that this storm will go over a lot of land before getting near Tampa: Puerto Rico, Cuba the long way, and South Florida.
You know your convention history!
Tropical systems can intensify with incredible rapidity in the Gulf of Mexico (even after crossing Cuba, etc.) so the unfortunate reality is that you would have to begin evacuations for a tropical storm, considering the danger that it is a hurricane or even major hurricane by landfall.
Problem is, evacuation routes for people trying to get out.
No loss, conventions are a waste of time in this day and age.
Let’s hold it in Detroit.Let the entire nation discover what so many in Michigan have known for years....when Rats and labor unions march in lock step,Detroit is what you get.
It isn’t the winds that make a hurricane so dangerous for Tampa. It’s the shape and shallow slope of the bay and all the low lying areas .
A hurricane coming up the west coat of Florida with the eye just off shore would pour massive amounts of water right into the bay (strongest winds are always on the northwest side of the storm ).
Worst case scenario for the Tampa Bay area is a northbound storm whose eye stays just offshore .A storm on that kind of path would cause massive amounts of flooding.
It’s still way to early to tell just what path this thing is likely to take .
Mayor of Tampa is a lib that would like nothing better than to cancel the convention tho ... the guy has even set up all kinds of goodies for the occupy protesters he expects to show up .
I doubt if a hurricane is bearing down, anyone is going to argue with him. He can order evacuations, can't he? If so, then he can cancel the convention. I doubt he could do it without an overwhelming safety concern. But a hurricane satisfies that.
Are you trying to get Republicans killed?
Only the GOP would schedule their once in four years convention in FL in high hurricane season.”
Why does this not surprise most of us. I do believe several on FR mentioned this very fact when the announcement was first made. IMO, the entire Gulf area should never have been considered for this very reason.
Hold it electronically. And prove that Congress could meet electronically, so there is no need for congressmen to send their representatives into the cesspool of D.C. corruption.
Yep. Was my immediate thought (and maybe FR post) as well.
