Does this often happen in late August, or are the AGW types going to go into contortions to explain how greenhouse-gas induced global warming is causing unseasonable cold spells in Oregon?

When I was growing up, August was the hottest, most humid month of the year.

Here in upstate New York, our heating system has kicked on in the wee hours of the morning the past two nights. I expect it to do so later this morning as well.

Please drift north to Seattle!

Three straight weeks of above average temps and/or ultra high humidity.

Enough!

I’m ready for some football and autumn leaves!

To: Jack Hydrazine; All

I just bought some oak firewood from Bahara’s in Sunnyvale, CA. The guy who sold me the wood says the woodsmen in the Sierra foothills are predicting a cold and wet winter. They say the ground squirrels are burrowing far up the river banks (getting ready for a flood next spring) and the deer are coming down much lower from the mountains much earlier this year. He says these guys know their stuff. Definite nip in the morning air in the SF Bay Area the last week or so and the Chinese Pistache trees are starting to turn already! My Sedum Autumn Joy is just turning red, too.

This is a ridiculous error of some sort.

First, Chemult and the others are in southwest OR, not southeast.

The actual forecast low temperature for Friday morning, apart from this silly derelict freeze watch, is 43-45 degrees F.

Now after doing some add'l research I'm not so sure. The forecast lows for pretty much the entire NW have just been dramatically lowered. Here in SE Washington the forecast low Friday night is now 48. The is an arid desert area, elevation below 500 asl and up until a couple hours ago the forecast HIGH for Saturday-Sunday was 100-102 (which would be typical for this area in August, just a few degrees above normal) and the forecast low had been about 62. Now the forecast HIGH has been lowered to 86 and the low as I say to 48. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS IS MY ALMOST 60 YEARS HERE! What are they expecting -- Yellowstone Caldera to erupt tomorrow or something????

I am planning a trip to the Oregon mountains tomorrow night and until this came up was worried about being uncomfortable in the previously expected high daytime temps of low 90s. Now it looks like I have to take WINTER SUPPLIES. BIZARRE beyond anything I have ever seen weatherwise!

The surface map shows a cold front coming through (understatement) with the jet stream dipping to suit. But the magnitude of the summer temperature change is unparalleled in my lengthy experience here. I do remember snow in Spokane in early June as a kid, but of course it hadn’t warmed up yet and certainly not into the triple digits.

I live in NE Oregon, in the high desert, and anything below the high 90’s would be welcome, although we do see a +40 degree temp swing overnight, and no humidity.

From another forum about this freeze watch.

“I see! That is why the Canadian Geese have been flocking early in Sonoma County, California.
For the past 2-3 weeks I have seen large crowds of the geese feeding in several fields. They are about 2 months early this year, but this may explain why they are here so early. Normally, the geese land in short grass fields, but the farmers have not cut the grass for some time. It’s strange to see just the heads of the guards that keep watch while the rest feed.
Looks like we may be in for some nasty weather this winter.”

Ping to some bizarre weather in a distant part of the country (for you). I always follow your hurricane threads, but this is truly “unexpected” and the magnitude and speed of the temperature drop is unparalleled up here. I note that the all-time recorded low for the date is 34-36 for most of these places, now expecting 28 (down from about 48 a couple nights previous).
