Huckabee digs in behind Akin
Politico ^ | // | Alexander Burns

Todd Akin hasn't had many high-profile supporters with him in the trenches this week, but Mike Huckabee became an important and emphatic exception Thursday afternoon, sending a message to his own supporters accusing Republican elites of trying to drum a good man out of a winnable Senate race. Here's what Huckabee said in an email to his list this afternoon:

Party’s leaders have for reasons that aren't rational, left [Akin] behind on the political battlefield, wounded and bleeding, a casualty of his self-inflicted, but not intentional wound.

No, it would not require a 12 yr old to give birth. No law requires anyone to save a life at the expense of their own, not biblical or secular.

My point is that a rape exception is entirely unnecessary for a 12 year old rape victim, it’a a straw man argument used by the pro-death crowd to defame and vilify the pro-choicers as crazy people who would force barely pubescent girls to have babies.

A more honest debate would center on the need for a rape exception for adult women rather than focusing on children.

FWIW Mary was probably 12 or 13 when she carried Jesus to term.

Unlikely, since Jewish children do not have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah until 13.

“Yesterday we began reminding folks of Akin’s solidly conservative voting record and encouraging the republican talking heads to walk back the attacks before catching too much egg on their faces. Today, it seems, that has begun. I for one am grateful. I thank them for listening. The chances of Missouri replacing McCaskill are far better sticking with Akin than threading needles to get withdrawals and court orders and a well-known viable replacements. It’s just common sense.”

Let’s wait and see how the next two polling cycles go.

If we start to see Akin climbing again — even if the climb is a slow one — and if at the same time we STILL do not see McCaskill “breaking 50”, then I think that he still has a chance to win.

Granted, it seems like an uphill climb that is near-impossible at this point (if we are to believe the press and the GOP-e).

But if Akin pulls this off, there is going to be a lot of mud on a lot of peoples’ faces. And none of it on Mr. Akin....

When a Jew has a bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah they are no longer considered a child.

How dare you. I am a Christian and I have read everything I can find about this for days. I also watched all the video interviews this man gave.
He is a foolish incompetent. His pride will indeed go before his fall.
Be very careful about the way you slander people who disagree with you.

Bible Belt?

Apparently you’ve not spent much time in the St. Louis or Kansas City, MO, areas, talking to the average person. There is a reason MO is a swing state.

There won't be mud on anybody's face if Akin squeaks out a win.

He had a substantial lead, opened his stupid pie hole and gave it away. Now precious momentum has been wasted, other GOP Candidates have been put in jeopardy while having to deflect questions about Akin (the one man wrecking crew) and we have lessened our chances of regaining the Senate and getting rid of Obamacare.

All this because of one self centered Idiot who thinks he is an expert on Women and Rape. I hope he wins because McCaskill has to go, but he doesn't deserve to win after the chaos he has brought down on Conservatives, the Pro Life Movement and the Republican Party.

Losing focus this close to an Election because of this Circus is unforgivable.

Akins has done more to damage the pro life cause than anyone in recent memory.

I suppose you think that children conceived in rape should be killed.

Akins has stood up for the pro-life movement his whole life. I haven't seen much of you on the pro-life threads on Free Republic. Are you on the pro-life ping list? How many pro-life threads have you started or participated in?

Well, I’d say an equal reason why conservatism is in trouble is because so many of our “spokesmen” and representatives make their arguments so poorly compared to their liberal opposition. This especially in races below the Presidential level. We have so few Gingrich’s, Wests, and Reagans...

Yes, the Dems have their Bidens, Ted Kennedys and so on, and they are protected by the MSM, but, I listened to Akin’s interviews on Hannity, who (Hannity) was really quite gentle with him (Akin). Afterward, I recall thinking “Oh my goodness, I hope not many moderates were listening to that...”

Consider: How many times have any of us been listening to a debate, whether local or national, and the Dem / lib candidate leaves an opening you could drive a large truck through, and “our guy” instead trips on his own feet or runs into the guardrail?

“Our” candidates do not need to be moderate - nay, they should not be. But they sure as heck need to be able to persuade a few moderates. Otherwise, “our guys” are just peeing into the wind...

Yeah..if Akin loses, it is freepers fault.

if Christine Donnell loses, it is Rove’s fault.

if Sharon Angle loses, it is RNC fault.

Funny how these so called super conservatives never seem to accept their own personal responsibility.

I’m sorry that Akin messed up, but in a way I’m glad. He has brought it into focus how the GOP only gives lip service to social conservatism. This incident has forced the truth to the surface.

He has made me re-evaluate my lukewarm position on abortion in the case of rape. I have given lip service to the idea of prohibiting abortion in the case of rape, but the attack on Akin has caused me to seriously consider the issue and I am now firmly in the "no exceptions" camp on abortion.

Abortion is murder and it cannot be justified merely because the father of the child is a rapist. It is God who gives us life. Who is man to take it away from an innocent child?

Thank you Todd Akin for accidentally drawing so much attention to this issue. You may have screwed up, but God will use it for good. In my life I know he has.

Praise God.

Well up until a few days ago I would have said Akin. AND IF he is on the ballot for Senate come November, I will vote for him... I have yet to come to terms as to whether or not I can vote for Romney... After this week of total confusion I just cannot wait to see who said what next.

Check out the link in my post. It explains how some of the liberals view this conspiracy theory about McCaskill helping Akin by her ads. Simply put, she was telling what they consider to be the "truth" about Akin. Maybe she feared him the most and went after him the hardest.

Being the most conservative or as she said "Todd Akin is a true conservative, too conservative for Missouri" is not considered a compliment by liberals. Perhaps she believes, like most liberals, that social conservatives are the easiest to beat. Her ads went out to everyone conservatives and liberals alike. The fact that she put out ads on all three indicates to me that she was covering her bases for the general election. I just think it is a bit of a stretch that she had a strategy that would drive voters towards Akin because he was the most conservative. Akin received 36% of the vote and the other two 29% each. It was pretty well split between all three candidates.

I looked at the ads and didn't see too many good things being said about Akin. He was painted as a radical, right wing nut job. Some points made in the ads:

Akin wants to privatize SS risking their benefits for seniors, abolish the minimum wage and comparing federal student loans to stage 3 cancer.

He would eliminate Depts of Energy and Education AND outlaw many forms of contraception.

Now maybe we may agree with Akin on the issues, but these ads were not meant to help him either in the primary or in the general with Dems or independents. The Daily Kos summed it up this way;

The same quote, same scene and no, it doesn't promote Akin. McCaskill spent money against all three of her primary opponents, these are the ads against Todd Akin. Somehow the NYT spins this idea that by telling the truth about Todd Akin, Claire McCaskill selected her adversary in the November election."

Did McCaskill exploit Todd Akin for who he is and what he says? Why shouldn't she? She's running for U.S. Senate. Outside groups have run millions in attack ads against her since last October. Claire McCaskill told the truth and called Todd Akin for what he is a true conservative, too conservative.

Did Claire McCaskill's campaign do a Romney like cost/benefit analysis on how to best use her campaign finances? I would hope so, but I think the media is trying to scare up a story that doesn't really exist. Todd Akin is toxic. It's not like Claire McCaskill gave him a script.

Here's hoping that Missouri sends Akin home.

I don't agree with the Daily Kos on anything, but I tend to agree with their analysis that McCaskill was just telling the truth about Akin, not trying to help him in the primaries.

Have you ever heard the song by Red Rider with the lyric:

“I have wandered... through the desert... found the ocean... not the rain” ?

That lyric would seem to have multiple applications.

FWIW, your anaylsis of MO politics is spot on, so far as I can see. Who the heck do some of our Freepers think elected names like Carnahan, Gephardt, and Jay Nixon?

Slightly OT: We are still solidly in D4. You too?
