Defense Minister Ehud Barak spoke by telephone to his Egyptian counterpart Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Friday morning, according to Arabic-language news agency Al-Hayat.
According to the report, al-Sisi affirmed Egypt's commitment to maintaining the 1979 Camp David peace treaty with Israel in the phone call, ahead of a meeting with Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy.
The report comes over speculation that relations with Egypt could break down over an Egyptian military build-up for counter-terror operations in Sinai, and Morsy's plan to attend the Non-Aligned Movement's conference taking place in Tehran at the end of the month. The conference marks the first visit to Iran by an Egyptian president since Egypts recognition of Israel.
On Sinai issue, Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said this week that Israel must ensure that "every letter of the peace treaty is enforced," referring to Camp David's provision that Egyptian forces stay out of Sinai. Former Israeli Military Intelligence Chief Amos Yadlin, however, commented that there is no need to latch on to every letter of the agreement.
What the Egyptians are doing in Sinai today is a more significant effort than in the past to deal with terrorism, Yadlin said. So long as the operation is widespread and focused against terrorism, I think we need to look at this realistically.
Al-Sisi, Hussain Tantawi's replacement, is also reported to have confirmed the understanding between Cairo and Tel Aviv regarding military operations to combat terrorism in Sinai.
The movement of military hardware into Sinai comes after a deadly attack earlier this month on Egyptian border guards that left 16 dead. Part of the assault included an attempt to breach the border with Israel. Israel reportedly had warned Egypt about the attack before it happened.

Under the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, Israel agreed to withdraw its troops and citizens from Sinai and return it to Egypt in return for normalized relations and a restriction on the number of Egyptian troops allowed to enter Sinai, particularly near the border with Israel. Israel has called on Egypt to control the terrorists in Sinai.
As if the Muslim would tell the truth!
Come a little closer, said the spider to the fly.
All the tanks we’re moving into the Sinai, of course, are nothing to worry about. Only an idiot, like Obama, would take this statement at its word.
This is merely Egypt’s way of saying “nice doggie” while looking for a rock. After a half-assed pretense of going after its terrorist allies, Egypt will have hundreds of its tanks permanently stationed on the border with Israel.
And Hitler was committed to the 1938 Munich Agreement.
Aren’t these the same people (MB) who said they wouldn’t run a candidate prior to ‘Arab Spring’ and now they’re in control of Egypt?
And the Democrats were committed to cutting spending in exchange for Papa Bush breaking his “Read my Lips” pledge.
And the Democrats were committed to securing the borders in exchange for Reagan’s amnesty for illegal alien invaders.
Correct me if I am wrong - IIRC, Egypt was actually pretending to be talking peacefully with Israel just before launching an all out attack decades ago.
I wouldn’t bet on this treaty holding.
How'd some dude with a last name of "al-Sisi" ever get to be a general? He must have learned to fight by getting picked on all the time or something.
Actually, “Fattah al-Sisi” all together is even worse :). Must have been tough growing up.
RE: How’d some dude with a last name of “al-Sisi” ever get to be a general?
I see a lot of people in the USA with the name of “Kiki”, both male and female. If you have a friend from the Philippines, you might want to ask him/her what the word means.
“Hey, he didn’t ask me, ‘do you plan to abrogate the treaty?’ If he’d asked me, I’d have told him.”
