Great video interview of football great Burgess Owens by Steve Malzberg.
Some quotes from the interview:

I viewed part of the interview, today. My goodness...this guy “gets it”!!!
How long before he’s labeled an Uncle Tom, or that they say he’s not black enough, or not authentically black like they did with Herman Cain.
What an obvious and elegant analysis. Brilliant.

People like this give me hope. It’s not about race. It’s about the real stuff of life.
I was reading about Dick Parsons and it was so refreshing to read his comments downplaying race. His pursuits have to do with his interests and loves, not with race. That’s so reflective of Martin Luther King Jr’s dream - that race wouldn’t matter. It’s just so rare to see a Black leader who doesn’t much care that he’s Black. He’s a person first - and that makes him appealing to others who identify first as persons.
That kind of thinking and living can unite the races under the banner of simply being persons. I am so hungry for that. That was what we had on 9-11; for a brief time we were all just persons again, and that was what mattered. I want that so much I can taste it.
And people like these guys bring me to tears of joy. Kudos to them!

It’s such a stupidly divisive thing. There are PEOPLE people much more than there are black people or white people or red people or yellow people. It happens that due to an accident of history, white people lucked into the wisest, most durable form of civilization known, but that has nothing to do with their whiteness. Absolutely nothing. And the sooner that people of all colors realize that acting wise doesn’t mean somehow being untrue to something as ephemeral as skin, the sooner they will live in relative peace.

When i was young and growing up in Virginia the black famlies were tight and strong and the black community was full of thriving small businesses. And we all went to school togather. Then came LBJ. The last time I went back there, there was no black community.
