Girl’s violent death stuns P.G. neighbors
The Washington Times ^ | August 23, 2012 | Andrea Noble

A 17-year-old Prince George’s County honor student who aspired to attend Harvard University was killed in her bedroom after a gunman burst into her house, police said Thursday — a crime considered unthinkable to residents who remembered the girl for her ambition and intellect.

The shooting occurred at about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday inside a split-level home on a quiet street of single-family houses in the Kettering neighborhood. Detectives are investigating a report that the gunman came through the front door, made his way into the house in the 100 block of Chartsey Street and shot Amber Deanna Stanley.

Other family members were inside during the ordeal, but police said they fled at some point. Officials on Thursday had no suspect description and did not speculate about a motive.

Amber was a senior at Charles H. Flowers High School, where officials described her as well-liked and scholarly and said she planned to become a doctor.

“She had the grades, SAT scores and the attitude to attend any college in this country and succeed,” Flowers High School Principal Gorman Brown said.

Amber was among 500 students enrolled in an advanced science and technology magnet program. Her death took an especially hard toll on the 100 or so seniors in the program with whom she attended classes for the past three years, Mr. Brown said. Grief counselors were on hand Thursday, just the fourth day of the school year, to talk with students and staff.

I lived in Hyattsville in the late 1970’s, on Longfellow so we could walk to the church just up the hill. I went back there a couple of years ago and felt as if I’d walked onto the set of “Back ToThe Future” where Biff was in charge.

Beirut used to be beautiful, too, and look whats’s been made of it!

I muse that the those that lived closer to DC on Baltimore Avenue all got gubmint jobs and moved outward to “more affordable”, higher-end housing and were not able to help help themselves in trashing the place with their habits learned in their childhood.

Many sad!

I lived near near Oxon Hill, during the ‘60s. Yes, the place has changed.

“Easy odds is more bl on bl violence and murder here.”

Oh, absolutely. This was something personal, or at least directed at someone in the house for a specific reason. There is nowhere near six degrees of separation between her and her killer.

And just as surely it wasn’t anything worth the life of a 17-year-old girl, or the life sentence the killer(s) will get when (not if) they get caught.

Beautiful girl. She worked hard to have a good future. So very sad at the complete disregard for life.

Just curious, when was your Dad at Leavenworth?

I passed that way a few times.

All the talk early on was about what a scholar she was, great student, etc., but she sure was pretty, too. Unfortunately in her case a deadly combo.

“Other family members were inside during the ordeal, but police said they fled at some point”

Too bad dad (or mom) didn’t have a loaded handgun handy. Perhaps then they wouldn’t have had to “fled”. Maybe even saved their Harvard aspired daughter from assassination.

And just about every county in VA has a statue to honor the confederate dead in front of the county courthouse....it’s history, not hate!
Also, Mosby’s grave as well as those of other raiders are in the Wincester area...great historic finds.
Enjoy!

Thurmont is where Camp David is...
No wonder the Poseur and his family don’t go there often.

Possession of firearms by the law-abiding is not encouraged in Maryland.

You like MoCo? Really? Why?

I moved here more than thirty years ago. It was really lovely back then. Not anymore. Crime, gangs, drugs, congestion, over-regulation, over-taxation, nasty cops everywhere, the school system a burning wreck, illegals everywhere, Muslims out of control, farmland vanishing beneath the blade of the earthmover, decent families moving out...it’s very unpleasant now, despite the great visual beauty.

Lately I’ve been working in Howard County. Much more relaxed. Oh, it’s still Maryland and there are still a lot of leftists and liberals, but they’re more concentrated in Columbia. Many nice people around, and more conservatives.

...they aren’t the stock still, half hour long parking sessions that are typical of Chicago at rush hour.

Hah! Just you wait. At least people in Chicago know how to drive in snow. Here, everyone acts like they've never seen the stuff. In many cases, they really never have seen it before. You will have a horrible time driving with idiots up and down all the hills on I-70 and 270 between Hagerstown and Germantown when it's slick and icy, and most of the other drivers are from Mumbai or somewhere.

the snow here really is not like Chicago's. We have a warmer average temperature in the winter, and much of the time it's right at the freezing point, so there's a lot of freezing rain. Lots of accidents on the ice. I didn't believe it when I moved here after living in the midwest, the north, and the far west, but it's true.

I really hope the money comes through for you so you can rent a place in Mount Airy, Damascus, or points north.

I’m guessing that since they were in the house, they saw his scary mug, but fearing retribution as usual, declined to describe him.

Newbies from Bombay (Mumbai) will certainly be a problem.

I’m hoping to get the locale issue straightened out before the freezes come.

In the meantime, to try to keep the budget going till I do get paid next, there really is a charming little private motel, the Castle Motel, with $28 rooms, up in Greencastle PA. Mildred, the proprietrix, is very charming. She’s also hard of hearing, though she apparently has a phone device that helps her hear OK on the phone. I tried to tell her face to face (I soon could tell she was lip reading) that I was inquiring about when a room would open (Monday? Tuesday? Wednesday?) with cash in hand now, and she just kept telling me I should call. Well then if she says she has it, I can’t put down the dough to hold the room (no charge cards), so I’m between a rock and a hard place.

These kids act like they can just step out of their life if they want, like changing the channel on a TV. And so life’s inevitable annoyances are addressed with tactics that are better suited to out and out war... consequences? what consequences?
