Poll shows Akin's slide in Missouri Senate race
St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | 08/25/12 | Kevin McDermott

Posted on 08/25/2012 5:19:39 AM PDT by TonyInOhio

U.S. Senate challenger Todd Akin's support in Missouri has plummeted since his remarks a week ago about "legitimate rape" and pregnancy, putting him 9 points behind Sen. Claire McCaskill in a race he was previously winning, according to a new Post-Dispatch/News 4 poll.

More than half of Missouri voters now view the Republican congressman unfavorably, the poll indicates, and fewer than one in five view him favorably.

Akin's fall is especially dramatic among women. They were about evenly split between Akin and McCaskill in a similar poll at the end of July, but women now oppose him by almost 20 percentage points. Even in rural areas where Akin retains the lead, his support has dropped significantly from a month ago.

"I've seen plenty of challengers nine points down come back and win, but not with this many obstacles," including loss of party support and funding nationally, said pollster J. Brad Coker of Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington, which conducted the poll for the Post-Dispatch and KMOV-TV. "It's not a rosy picture."

Kiss this seat goodbye. I'm hoping Huckleberry and his followers will enjoy their symbolic victory.

At a slow, steady pace, he can rebuild and possibly overtake her sometime in mid March.

Mid-march would be just in time for Easter. Commemorating the resurrection. I will be the first to volunteer to help in the April elections

I cannot see him winning under any stretch of the imagination. Who will pay for his campaign? Or does he just plan on going down with the ship?

Many Conservatives, including a large number of members of this site have decided that all of this is an evil conspiracy by RINOs determined to get Akin off the ticket so that they can replace him with some namby pambly Republican. They fully support his pig-headed refusal to withdraw.

Unfortunately, this is really an evil conspiracy by Claire McCaskill, his Democrat opponent, who spent over 1 million dollars helping him win the nomination. She did this because she thought that he would be the easiest to beat, even before he opened his mouth and jammed in both feet. She is so happy these days, and is leading the charge to keep him in. No one who makes his living in politics thinks he can win.

So we have all of these pro life, staunchly conservative types doing everything that they can to help Claire McCaskill, an abortion queen and big ally of Barack Obama, get reelected. Is this bizarre, or what?

As much as I hate to say it, 70 days is an eternity in politics. Missouri is in the middle of the bible belt and there has been more than a little soul searching happening up there. Played right, Akin will be an anti-establishment underdog who was wrongly attacked.
The down side is an Akin win will not necessarily carry to Romney who will be viewed as the Establishment who attacked him.
The GOP needs to understand that we must cover for our nutcases just like the other side covers for theirs.

“Or does he just plan on going down with the ship?”

His ego will take him down with the ship. He will be broke in a month, but he will refuse to give up.
He is delusional in his belief, that he alone is the only one who can speak for all the conservatives out there.
He is an egocentric fool.

The longer this issue is out there, the more bizarre his supporters become.
They won’t accept the fact that he only has a 20% favorable rating.
McCaskill has a war chest of over 12 million and he has 2 million. She has not even started her negative campaign against him. All she has to do is reenforce his negatives for a few more weeks and then slide into the finish. He will be out spent 6-7 to 1.
Akin is a dead man walking.
Its people like Huckabee who is helping to keep this fool running, and in the end it will be baby killer McCaskill back in the senate for 6 more years.
Bizarre is right!

You know, this thread just exhibits some of the real problems preventing conservatives from accomplishing anything.

The first problem is of course, cowardice. Lord knows I would prefer a ‘rat division in front of me than a gop division behind me. This race is a classic example of gop and to a lesser extent conservative cowardice in action. Thank God this is just a senate seat and not something really important like repelling a military attack or something like that.

Second is the value put on talking the talk rather than walking it. Its no surprise that willard is the presidential candidate and Todd Akin is on the ropes. When it comes down to it, it would appear that most “conservatives” prefer to be lied to by a smooth operator than support a rough around the edges candidate who has a stellar record of supporting conservatism.

Pathetic.

Sure that might be a strategy that will appeal to some, but how does he get that message out?
He will be broke in a short time, and McCaskill will out spend him 6 to 1.
No support from the national or state GOP, no money. No other Rep in the state will campaign with him.
No organizational help from the state or national GOP organizations. Try setting up a state wide campaign with those limitations.

He is being isolated from reality by his son and his wife who run his campaign.
Did you see his press conference yesterday? He limited the press to 5 questions. A sure sign of an isolated person who doesn’t want to here or see the truth.

The only glimmer of hope I took from one of the Huckabee articles I read this morning was where he said something like “if the polls show it to be an uphill battle, then maybe later Todd will need to consider dropping out”

Akin isn’t cominq back in the polls. He’s been defined and tarnished permanently. And if you read this story, it helps perhaps define one of the political strategy splits that we see on this board over the years. The difference between the rural conservatives and the suburban conservatives.

Akin is still polling at 50 percent in the rural districts (down from 60 percent) but the bottom has fallen out in the suburbs around KC and St. Louis.

For better or worse, these suburbs around the US have a lot of soccer moms in them who will vote for a smart, articulate conservative like Paul Ryan or Scott Walker. But they aren’t going to vote for a conservative that is a dope like Todd Akin.

So we can keep running people like Akin, Angle and a few other of the favorites of some on here that I won’t mention for fear of starting a riot. But we will lose because we won’t capture that suburban soccer mom vote, even though it is there for the taking with better candidates as we’ve seen in my home state of Wisconsin the past two years. .

RKBA Democrat,
I want to thank you for opening my eyes. I’ve lived in Mo all my life, and I had never realized that there was only one conservative prolife Republican in the state who could represent my views until people like you convinced me just how important this truly great this man really is.
Here is a man who can accept defeat in an important race just to set an example to me and many millions, that principle to ones own campaign is more important than actually accomplishing something that would be productive to the cause.
Never let anyone say Mr Akin is afraid to take on the establishment and express his heart felt beliefs and then to have the courage to with stand the slings and arrows of his detractors, who we all know would rather have a RINO take his place.
Yes Mr Akin is a selfless crusader who is vastly misunderstood, and people will realize this when Sen. McCaskill has to defend herself in 2018.

Oh it is going to get worse, wait until McCaskill opens up her campaign against him.

Remember all this is self inflicted, she hasn’t even started on him yet.

I live in MO, you don’t know what your talking about. McCaskill tied herself to Obama and will go down with him.
