Wapakoneta, Ohio, his hometown, is about 40 miles from here. He was my childhood hero.

“Will Obama order the flags to Half staff?”

***

Maybe. But I’m sure Obama will crash the funeral. Never one to miss an opportunity to campaign.

Rest in peace, Commander Armstrong. Thank you for one of the most wonderful events of my life.

I look back to July 21 1969 and sometimes think I saw the apex of the USA. Terrible to contemplate that perhaps at the age of 14 I saw my nation at its zenith and we have been slowly slipping downhill since.

Armstrong and his hot ride circa 1962, the North American Aviation X-15. The experimental program produced flights up to an altitude of 67 miles and velocity of 4,519 mph.

We seem to be a nation that now reaches toward mediocrity if it even bothers to reach at all!

We exist totally off the accomplishments of the past!

I’m much younger than you, and agree. I was born a couple generations after you and used to say I was born 40 years too late.

As I said on the other thread now locked that moment back in 1969 was the greatest human achievement event of my lifetime. While I am much younger I suddenly feel my mortality a bit more. RIP Mr. Armstrong and thanks for the memories.

I met Neil Armstrong when he was first chosen as an astronaut. The astronaut's secretary lived in my apt. complex and they would come by to pick up or leave stuff with her when they flew in and out of town.

The day he came over we had moved from the pool to her living room. She introduced everybody and told us after he left that he was going to be the first man to step on the moon. It was 6 years later that he did. It always amazed me that NASA had planned that far a head.

Once my next door neighbor almost ran over Scott Carpenter pulling into the parking lot.

No. We haven’t hit our zenith yet and probably won’t anytime soon.

I don’t think he flew the X-15. He was a civilian. Didn’t Chuck Yeager fly the X-15?

I was just a little kid in 1969, 8 years old, but my dad and I watched every minute of the TV coverage. For me and for my dad, a WWII vet, this was the pinnacle of American ingenuity and bravery.

Godspeed Neil. The Eagle has landed.

Apollo 11:"The Eagle has landed."

I will always remember those grainy B&W tv pics that hot summer eve...

Sad that he died.

Sadder still that two whole generations of Americans have came since then and NEVER SAW AN AMERICAN WALK ON THE MOON!

RIP, Mr. Armstrong

I still remember watching the moon landing on TV. Heck I remember they used to quarantine the astronauts for 30 days or so after they landed. Yeah I am old some days...LOL

Rest In Peace Mr Armstrong.
