New Poll Finds Most Americans Are Pro-Life
Townhall.com ^ | August 25, 2012 | Daniel Doherty

A brand new CNN survey shows a supermajority of Americans want abortions proscribed in all or most circumstances (via LifeNews):

The survey asked: “Do you think abortion should be legal under any circumstances, legal under only certain circumstances, or illegal in all circumstances?” Some 62 percent want abortions illegal in all cases or legal only in certain instances while just 35% want abortions legal for any reason.

Breaking down the question further, CNN asked, “Do you think abortion should be legal in most circumstances or only a few circumstances?”

Here, 52 percent took a pro-life view saying abortion should be illegal in all (15%) or most circumstances (37%) while just 44 percent took a pro-abortion view saying abortions should be legal in all (35%) or most (9%) circumstances.

Looking more closely at when abortions should be legal, CNN asked about if they should be allowed when the woman’s life is endangered. Americans agreed with that on a 88-9 percentage point margin. In cases of rape and incest, Americans supported legal abortions on a 83-14 percentage point margin. And when the woman’s health is supposedly in danger from the pregnancy, Americans were alright with abortion on a 83-12 percentage point margin.

That makes it clear Americans only support abortion in the most rare instances and clear oppose abortions in the 99 percent of cases when abortion is chosen for convenience, social or birth control reasons.

As Katie and Guy have noted, President Obama’s views on abortion (as demonstrated by his voting record as a State Senator) fall well outside mainstream public opinion. His opposition to the Born Alive Infant Protection Act (BAIPA) -- a bill, I think, almost all Americans can support -- should raise serious eyebrows. Still, Democrats persistently and falsely accuse Republicans of waging a “war on women.” This is simply infuriating, especially when one takes a few minutes to read the Republican Party’s 2012 platform on abortion -- a practice that has ended the lives of millions of innocent unborn girls since Roe vs. Wade. Here’s an excerpt:

THE SANCTITY AND DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFE Faithful to the "self-evident" truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or fund organizations which perform or advocate it and will not fund or subsidize health care which includes abortion coverage. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life. We oppose the non-consensual withholding or withdrawal of care or treatment, including food and water, from people with disabilities, including newborns, as well as the elderly and infirm, just as we oppose active and passive euthanasia and assisted suicide.

In other words, I personally find it difficult to argue Republicans are waging a “war on women” when the Republican Party itself unequivocally opposes, for example, sex selective abortions (unlike most House Democrats) and upholds the sanctity and dignity of every human life. At any rate, I’ll leave you with this: Florida Senator Marco Rubio making the case -- earlier this year -- that the United States can never live up to its founding principles until it deals openly and honestly with the issue of abortion. It is, indeed, an eloquent and remarkable speech -- and worth watching in its entirety:

Sen. Marco Rubio Defends Life at Susan B. Anthony List Gala, 2-1-12 (Part 1)

Sen. Marco Rubio Defends Life at SBA List Gala, 2-1-12 (Part 2)

Sen. Marco Rubio Defends Life at SBA List Gala, 2-1-12 (Part 3)

This poll is not really a surprise. A majority of Americans have always been pro-life. The media pretend otherwise, but despite all their efforts most people find the killing of babies to be unpleasant, at best.

One way that McCain could have won the last election was to use the debates to expose Obama as an abortion extremist of the worst kind. But he avoided the subject almost completely.

Similarly, instead of wringing their hands at Akin’s minor flub, if the Republicans and conservatives had counterattacked by exposing the obvious love of baby-killing that clearly lies behind the media attacks, they would have won the battle and a lot of votes, and turned a negative campaign into a positive one.

Yes. It’s always been true that most Americans don’t want to countenance abortion policy that is as liberal as the reality that was loosed by Roe v. Wade. And yet America isn’t quite ready for fetus personhood, either. Abortion bans prior to Roe occupied a shadowy region short of personhood but more than humane regulations.

I agree that the GOP needs to be more aggressive in pointing out how the Democrats are in truth much more extreme in their support of abortion on demand, imposed by the Courts, and at tax payer’s expense if necessary. The media is clearly not going to be fair, so the GOP must do a better job.

But it would have been easier to do this and support Akin if he didn’t hold the the no abortion at all position, that this poll clearly shows to be unpopular.

AP in their Obama story today tried to claim that Obama was the mainstream (infanticide, gay marriage) on social issues while the pro life, traditional marriage movement (using Akin as a hammer) were extremists. It’s amazing the disconnect they have from the country they live in.

Senator Akin has shown us the baby killers in our own party. Allowing faux “rape’ as justifying the murder of a child. What hypocrites they are!! Romney wants to kill a baby because mommy says daddy didn’t have consent?? I did not know that! Did you?

You clearly didn't read the article. 83% of Americans (including, obviously, many Republicans) support abortion rights for the victims of rape.

And what's this "mommy says daddy didn’t have consent" BS? Are you trolling this forum, trying to make the stupidest posts of the day?

There's a lot of that going on here lately.

Truth stings the soul doesn’t it? It hurts you very bad because it is the killing of a human being based on a nebulous concept of rationalization and it will wake up in the middle of the night with stomach pains. It is murder.

This is in agreement with what the Wall St. Journal refers to as the “Roe effect.” The idea is that most people tend to adopt the same political views as their parents, and that liberals have a higher abortion rate than conservatives. As a teacher of biological evolution migbt say - liberals are literally aborting themselves out of existence.

A ban to stop aborted babies from being shelved to die would be burdensome to their mothers. She alone should decide whether her baby lives or dies. Before voting “no” for a 2nd time in the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 5, 2002,

Obama stated:

What we are doing here is to create one more burden on women, and I can’t support that.

In the Illinois legislature, he opposed the “Born-Alive Infants Protection Act” three times.

He opposed a partial-birth abortion bill in Illinois, even as the federal version passed the House with 282 votes and the Senate with 64 votes and was signed into law by President Bush in 2003.

In 2007, he told the Planned Parenthood Action Fund that his first act as president would be signing the Freedom of Choice Act. The act would enshrine in federal law a right to abortion more far-reaching than in Roe v. Wade and eliminate basically all federal and state-level restrictions on abortion. This isn’t a point its supporters contest; it’s one they brag about. The National Organization for Women says it would “sweep away hundreds of anti-abortion laws [and] policies.”

"abortion rights for the victims of rape."

I take it you see the child in utero as having no rights and not even a victim?
How is it that this position (83% or not) can be considered conservative?

I guess if I had to pick one to "die on" that'd be the one...

What exactly would be the one you'd pick?

The baby's heart begins beating at 3 weeks and one day after conception. It is not a blob of flesh that may not be a human if you left it alone, it is a human being.

I love Rubio's speech where he says the pro abortion lobby says "well it cannot live on its own, so the mothers rights trumps life." Except a new born cannot live on its own, a two year old may not live on its own. Lost argument.

I tell all young people I meet that a woman's choice is choosing to have sex. That is your choice and once THAT choice is made, you take responsibility for the consequences of your choice.

Come to the 2013 Prolife march in DC it will be the 40th anniversary of Roe v Wade, 40 million dead babies and counting.

The no abortion at all position is unpopular until you get the explanation out. Unfortunately, you have to make your voice heard above the roar of a million liberal politicans, media prostitutes, and people who love Planned Parenthood.

Lakin did a poor job of it, but the answer is not to bash him, but to do a better job. Begin with the fact that all abortions kill a human being, and that rape is not the baby’s fault. Continue with the fact that most women who have abortions feel depressed and unhappy about it afterward. No one ever told them that. But horrible as it is to be raped, it’s worse on the woman to abort her child than it would be to give birth to it and adopt it out, if she cannot deal with keeping it.

To be pro life is, contrary to the feminazis, better for unborn babies AND their mothers.
