BURKE COUNTY, N.C.
When a robber pulled a 10-inch knife on a store clerk, the clerk pulled a gun and chased him from the store.
Sheriffs deputies spent much of Monday afternoon watching the video and trying to identify the robber.
Deputies said the suspect put the knife to the throat of the 63-year-old clerk.

At the end of the video, reporter recounts Sheriff’s admonition..
“Yes, you have right to protect yourself, home and business” “but somebody else COULD have been hurt out in that parking lot.”
WHO? The knife-wielding wannabe murderer? We don’t need cowards like this “protecting and serving” us.
Gas Stops and Convenience stores should take a cue from Gunshops. Most of the ones in my area have ALL employees wearing holstered weapons in full view.....no robberies, at least in the daytime when they are there....
The sheriff is an idiot.
ok i saw the video- how did the clerk “fight back”
the guy puts a knife to his throat, then almost immediately take it away and walks out of the store
I would have been still wondering what was going on- the whole thing lasted 3 seconds...
Then he shoots at him while he is running away? Not a good move once the threat is gone... not that I am complaining (except that he missed)
what made the robber immediately take the knife away? it looks like he saw something out the window that made him want to leave
I am complaining about the “fought back” angle to this story- not about the potential removal of scum from the earth
The sheriff is right but did not give the right reason.
Shooting a retreating robber in the back in NC will get you at the very least a very expensive trial and lots of big bills from your lawyer, a civil suit from the bad guy and more than likely some jail time. The BG doesn't even have to run. If he simply turns his back and stands there, under NC law he is no longer a threat and you can not shoot if he is no longer a threat.
The sherrif is just cya. Doesn’t want to work harder by making up a homicide report. It is all too common in the workplace. Problems don’t get solved. Just take the first hit and then call a lawyer. The resolution is then drawn out over time. Everybody is safe and the victim just has to get over it. Stand your ground.
I suspect that the criminal was not committed and did not expect any resistance. When things did not go as planned, he panicked and ran.
Pretty common. Most criminals today are not desperate. They just want an easy score.
When someone is there that's the only time a robbery can occur.
ha ha......
Fought back may be a misnomer, but consider what that label represents. Instead of an anti-second amendment diatribe the news suggested it was self-defense. This is a tidal change in news coverage (at local level).
I’ll take the misnomer for the new attitude.
I have only one thing to say. The store clerk needs a bit more range time.
Something is very wrong here. I do not think it was a robbery. Instead I think the guy with the knife was giving the clerk “a message”.
Look at the video closely. The guy with the knife uses a technique. Somewhat like some types of soldiers (Asian) would use a knife to silence an enemy soldier. (Also note his shoes. They look odd.) He is as calm as a cucumber.
It would be a very good idea for the Sheriff to follow this one up.
This is my favorite - watch the 5 armed thugs scrambled over one another to get out the door - after granny comes after ‘em -
ahahaha
Don’t mess with granny (they’ll never live that down)
