Beginning next month, Californians for the first time will be able to use the Internet to register to vote, giving them about six weeks of online access to register in time to participate in the Nov. 6 presidential election.
In an advisory sent late Wednesday, the office of Secretary of State Debra Bowen informed the state's 58 county elections officers that the California Online Voter Registration System is in its final stages of testing and will become operational in early September. Software upgrades are scheduled to be electronically transmitted to the counties Friday, with online training for local officials to be conducted next week.
"It's really huge," said Secretary of State Debra Bowen. "I think it will be extremely popular and am very hopeful it will increase voter registration."
For about the last year, the state has offered a web-based registration process — but the last step is cumbersome. The voter must print, sign and mail the registration form that he or she filled out.
The new system will be what Bowen called "a one-click process."
"That's fantastic news for Californians," said Kim Alexander, president and founder of the nonprofit California Voter Foundation. "I think this will be very popular among eligible voters. I think it will facilitate potentially hundreds of thousands of users."
Gov. Jerry Brown last fall signed a law authorizing the development of the system, which involves the secretary of state and the Department of Motor Vehicles coordinating their databases in a way that will allow elections officials to authenticate a new registrant's identity and obtain a digitized copy of his or her signature.
The law gave Bowen as much time as necessary to perfect the system, and she said her office has made its development a top priority...

I think that, similar to other state online voter registration systems, you will need a California driver’s license or a California state identification card in order to register.

It’s easy. Just get a CA driver’s license. We just received our registration from IL, we have our absentee for CA and another state just sent us one. They don’t seem to care if you have a license in those states..so vote early and vote often.
Illegal aliens are being given California driver’s licenses under 0bama’s amnesty plan.
Easy = fill out a voter registration card and lie about your address. It's a felony, and that's something you can do on a printed-out form just as easy (actually, easier) than you can online.
In a way, I think this system is better than we have now.
Because one election cycle, I voted a straight Republican ticket, then during the next election cycle, I was “magically” purged from the registration rolls, even though I hadn’t moved or had done anything to give the government reason to purge my registration. I voted provisionally and had to fight to make it count, even though it didn’t make a difference in the election.
With electronic registration, I can at least make sure I am always registered without going through a government bureaucrat who can chuck my registration card in the bin.
You laugh, but the quicker we can register 200 million people to vote in a state with 30 million residents, the quicker we can totally expose this folly.
And approximately 50 states have given legal immigrants driver's licenses for decades. A driver's license isn't proof of citizenship, but it is proof of identity. And the online voter registration system requires proof of identity, which the old paper form does not require. This is a step in the right direction, imho.

Online voting registration isn’t a cure all, but it’s the next step in the right direction. Over time, it will eat away at all the paper registration forms. Also, it’s easier to read and be sure of the information in online registration, as opposed to the handwriting on many of the paper forms. So over time, it will tighten up the voting rolls and make it more cumbersome to try to attempt voter fraud.
I don’t want it to be hard to register or vote, but some states, including California, go too far to make it too easy.
I remember Jeff Greenfield, a now-retired, quite liberal commentator for ABC News, speaking on-air against California’s (or some other state’s) “Motor Voter” law, whereby someone getting a driver’s license or renewal was AUTOMATICALLY registered to vote unless s/he opted out manually. Greenfield’s point was that it’s already very easy to register, in that anyone can get a postage-paid form for free either at a post office, library, government building or even by mail (by calling a toll-free number). Isn’t that already easy enough?, he asked. Do we really WANT the marginal, added votes of folks who, in this easy-register system, STILL aren’t registered? How motivated could such folks be, to make good voting decisions? And agree.
This latest step just makes it worse, of course.
What next? Mandatory voting, like in Australia? (A step that resulted in a still center-right nation routinely electing left-Labour governments.)
In Kalifornicate: the candidate or measure with the most votes wins even when there are enough votes that are verified as illegitimate thus proving a loss. And invariably, no one ever goes to jail for vote fraud in Kalifornicate. This e registration does one thing, it broadens the allowance for vote fraud to be legal and on a larger scale.
If you're against this, I'm not sure what exactly it is that you support -- banning all voter registration?
Ah....the Californian RATS finally get their wish.....illegals can now vote online.
It’s already possible to do more things with a abentee ballot than a monkey does with a peanut.
Imageine the voter fraud possiblilties with ‘on line’ ballots.
