Did You Know That Winston Churchill Had Greater Claim To American Citizenship Than Obama?

Posted on 08/30/2012 9:23:53 AM PDT by pinochet

In all the debate about Obama returning Winston Churchill's bust to the British Embassy, nobody mentioned the one important fact about Churchill. Churchill was a dual citizen of both Britain and the United States. This may shock the American admirers of Churchill, who do not like to read history books.

Churchill's mother, Jeanette Jerome, was an American woman who was born in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn in 1854. Her father, Leonard Jerome, was born in the town of Pompey near Syracuse, New York. Here is the Wiki entry on Churchill's Mother: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Randolph_Churchill

In addition, President Kennedy honored Churchill by making him the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States, which gave Churchill all the rights of an American citizen. This made Churchill fully eligible to run for President of the United States in 1964, a year before his death in 1965. A special passport type document was given to Churchill in 1963, giving him his American citizenship: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Randolph_Churchill

America has as much right as Britain, to claim Churchill as one of their own. When Obama returned Churchill's bust to the British Embassy, it was not just an insult to Britain, it was an insult to America. Obama insulted one of the greatest citizens that America has ever produced. If Obama had been an actual citizen of America, he would never have treated his fellow American in such a manner. This may be the punishment that America deserves, for electing a foreigner as President in 2008.

NO, it did NOT. Honorary Citizenship in no way meets the Constitutional Requirement of being Natural Born. Despite the citizenship changes in the 14th Amendment, the Presidential qualification was not altered nor did the Amendment change (or even define) the term.

Churchill’s Bust was probably staring at The Usurper saying something to the effect of “Get out of my chair!”

Not sure I agree with this. Both Churchill and Obama had undeniably American mothers, but Churchill never claimed to have been born in America or to have been a natural born US Citizen as Obama has.

Also, if you are going to claim Churchill on the grounds of his American heritage, can we claim a truckload of great Americans as well? Seeing as most of them were of British descent...

I read a biography of W. Churchill, and though I was aware of his undeniable stature as a politician and statesman, etc., my esteem for him was even further increased.

He certainly was a great and remarkable person.

Actually, it’s hardly fair to compare “O” to Churchill....it’s sort of like comparing the contents of Fort Knox to a Monopoly token!

I wanted to make the point that Churchill was more qualified to run for President than Obama. Churchill had an American mother, just like Obama. His citizenship claims were further strengthened by the Honorary Citizenship in 1963. In any case, it would have been impossible for the 90 year old Churchill to run for President, even if he had been ruled as eligible to run. Of course, Churchill’s primary loyalties were to Britain, not America. But he was more loyal to America than Obama, as we saw in his partnership with FDR in World War Two.

It’s difficult to even properly laud Churchill. He spoke his mind admirably.

Winston Churchill was always proud of his American ancestry. Less known, though, is that Churchill descended from an ancestor who came to America on the Mayflower as an indentured servant. It was through English-born Pilgrim John Howland that Winston Churchill obtained his American roots. And through John Howland, Winston Churchill was related to Presidents Roosevelt, Nixon, Ford, Bush41 and Bush 43 - and to Always A Marine and probably millions other Americans.

Pinochet was a much misunderstood and very capable leader. At least Maggie Thatcher understood his greatness when she gave him a silver plate after his sucessful defeat of a Communist frame up of him in Britain.

Sometimes I think America is in such a bad state that we need a Pinochet type leader here.

I believe that under US law of the time, when Jeanette Jerome married Lord Randolph Churchill, she lost her US citizenship. Therefore Winston Churchill's statement when he spoke to a joint session of Congress soon after Pearl Harbor

"By the way, I cannot help reflecting that if my father had been American and my mother British, instead of the other way round, I might have got here on my own."

It was good that the Communist Allende was overthrown, too.
