Students may be catching a break if they misbehave in school. The rules surrounding suspensions in New York City schools are changing.
The changes to the discipline code should result in far fewer suspensions, CBS 2’s Vanessa Murdock reported Wednesday.
“Our goal is to make sure the schools are providing a safe environment for our students, but also we just don’t push students out of the classroom where they’re not learning as well,” Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said.
What will be different? Well, for starters Walcott said cutting class and cursing will no longer be grounds for suspension.

School discipline is a tricky question in troubled areas. It seems odd to lock a kid out of a classroom for failing to go to that classroom. It also seems odd to keep bad, disruptive kids in a classroom with decent kids who are trying. I’d like to see separate schools or a school-within-a-school system, where the troublemakers are removed from the environment of the decent kids. How many chances, if any, to give is open for debate, but in any case habitual problem children should not be in the same room with kids who are trying to make it despite the neighborhood’s challenges.
As long as the left wingers are in charge of the schools, it doesn’t matter.

Does this mean the zero tolerance (zero common sense) laws will at least be relaxed? Does it mean that the kid that gets bullied won’t be expelled for defending him/herself?

This actually comes out of something that Bambi launched not long ago, when he said that black students were being punished disproportionately (to their numbers, not to their misbehavior).
Assaulting a teacher will now result in the cutting in half of the offender’s condom rations for a full week.
TRANSLATION: “In the interest of equal-outcome, we are no longer going to discipline Eric Holder’s people. Discipline of non-Eric Holder’s people will be accelerated to compensate for past disparate impact.”

Yeah, a lot of cities used to have those 'bad boy' schools back before the 60s. The teachers probably got some things accomplished.
My idea is to fence in a several hundred square mile block in some desolate area and dump their asses in. Drop some food, water, seeds, tools, and instructions on how to farm how to build shelters. No phones, radios, music, or any entertainment other than good books. Tell them to send us a letter when they are ready to act civilized. They come out and screw up, send them back.
I lived through this nonsense in my teaching career, especially during my one year at a public school, aka, my year in hell.
Short of punching a teacher in the mouth, there were almost no infractions that would result in a student’s suspension. There was an alternative school available, but, apparently, the district considered every suspension a mark against the school.
Consequently, the 10% of the student body that did not want to be in school to begin with succeeded in preventing the other 90% from getting a decent education.
Agreed. I have often said that there should be 2 schools. One would serve the students who want to be there and who conduct themselves in a respectful fashion, and it would include students of all abilities. The other school would be for the little punks who don’t want to be there and whose antics prevent the other kids from learning.
I never had issues with pictures of guns - now, the kid who actually brought the gun? Him, I had issues with.
