Carmel stands by Eastwood after speech
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | August 31, 2012 | Benny Evangelista and Kevin Fagan

When "Dirty Harry" interviewed "Invisible Obama" at the Republican convention Thursday night, Clint Eastwood gained a new kind of fame, as the butt of jokes all over the Twitter-verse.

"Idea for a cable drama: Clint Eastwood is a hard-boiled cop that sees his dead partner in every empty chair. It's called 'La-Z Boys in Blue,'"read one tweet.

"Give Clint Eastwood a break. ...The RNC asked him to speak about ObamaCare and he thought they said ObamaChair," read another.

The actor's mock interview of an empty chair purportedly representing President Obama turned into one of the most-talked-about events of the entire convention. Probably not in the way Eastwood or the GOP intended.

It had convention delegates and other Republicans alternately guffawing and scratching their heads. And it gave Democrats new ammunition heading into their own convention next week.

"Condescending talk down and ridicule of POTUS by white man makes Eastwood a great tea party icon," read another tweet.

Yet in the real world - Carmel-by-the-Sea, where the 82-year-old actor and former mayor is regarded more as a friendly neighbor than a big-shot movie star, the reaction was akin to a shrug.

"Hey, he's a nice guy who walks around town and talks to all the locals," said resident Ann Oggerino, 48, who works at a downtown gas station. "Nobody's going to hold anything against him."

The guy's a hit

On a night Republicans hoped the country would focus on presidential nominee Mitt Romney, San Francisco's Twitter said Eastwood came close to stealing the online show.

The third-biggest spike in Twitter traffic during the entire convention, behind speeches by Romney and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, was the 7,044 tweets per minute posted after Eastwood had his imaginary, sometimes funny, sometimes halting, on-stage conversation with an invisible Obama, represented by that empty chair.

>>ridicule of POTUS by white man...

Same old, same old, except even more illiterate than usual. I guess that Alinsky tactic of ridicule is starting to leave a mark. We need more of that, but without the malice of Alinsky; just like Clint laid it on.

I’m shocked a person as stupid as whoever wrote that knows how to read and write

Eastwood looked terrible and rambling. But no matter. Everyone talking about how he made Obama into an “empty chair” and that speaks volumes. There are moments in an election that are memorable. “Where’s the beef.” was one. “It’s the economy stupid.” another. “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” another. Eastwood’s Obama empty chair will be one of those moments and the left knows it.

Mike Savage was correct. Clint Eastwood's convention speech will go down in history as one of the greatest convention speeches of all time.

The pathetic attempts at humor and attempts to make him the butt of jokes fails to impress me. More than that, the fast and furious response to his speech illustrate how effective he was.

The immediate and intense response made his day, just as Clint Eastwood asked "Go ahead, make my Day!"

If you have not listened or read Clint Eastwood's speech, please do before you read the hysterical and shallow attacks and attempts at humor by the leftists. You might find them somewhat amusing. The Democrat playbook is a small book with only one chapter.

Clint Eastwood sounded like every bit of his 83 years., but his message wasn’t lost.

He is old and he did ramble, but his message was solid.

Clint is coming to the end days, and he wants to leave America with a solid future.

With Obama there is no future.

Clint Eastwood’s empty chair skit hit home, and penetrated the target deeply: Undecided Voters.

Thats why the Dems are so busy scrambling around trying for some kind of damage control, ALL of which has failed.

Obama indeed is an empty chair. He has been a pResident of no compromise with Congress, even when the DEMS controlled both houses for 2 years.Hell, Obama could not compromise with HIMSELF let alone a bunch of Republican Congress Critters.Obama is an ideologue, and therefore he HAS ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING.

Clint Eastwood skillfully pointed all of this out.
And the secret is out. “When they do not do their job, you just gotta let ‘em go,” a simple line that none of the MSM showed in their carefully edited clips of Eastwood’s speech.

I thought it was funny and it was refreshing to see ANYONE dare ridicule Obama. Late night comedians and comedy shows treat him with such careful respect (careful not to be called racist which is this generation’s equivalent of ‘Communist’ in the 1950s).

Dems are in a tailspin over it mostly mocking Clint for being old — ageism is one of the ‘isms’ apparently okay by them. (And we thought they cared about Grandma!).

At 83, I think Clint could still beat down about 99.99% of all Democrats. In fact, I think he did so at the convention

From another thread....

And would like to see people all across the country stick an empty chair in their front yard - a la Wag the Dog and the shoes bit. That would really get under Obama’s skin!

Lets see empty chairs in front gardens across the nation...

Ha...take another look...Clint is as sharp as a tack....that was all part of the performance from a great actor/director.

You think the hair wasn't like that by design....

..and the rambling was just perfect.

If you’ve ever seen Clint on a talk show, you would know that this was Clint himself....a rambling realist, sarcastic and impish....

And by making it an issue and poking fun at it, they're driving people to see it.

Other movie quotes Eastwood could have used for Obama:
“He’s a legend in his own mind.”
“A man’s got to know his limitations.”
“I know what you’re thinking...should he get 8 years or only 4? You have got to ask yourself one question...are F-ING NUTS?”
