Y-12 fallout: winners, losers and lots and lots of blame

No shortage of blame after July break-in

OAK RIDGE — For decades, protesters have gathered at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant on the Aug. 6 anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, to call for a halt to production of nuclear weapons at the Oak Ridge plant.

A few days before this year's event, they got their wish. At least temporarily.

On Aug. 1, the National Nuclear Security Administration and its Y-12 contractor announced that all nuclear operations at the Oak Ridge plant, which enriched the uranium for the "Little Boy" bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II and has since played a role in the manufacture of every nuclear weapon in the U.S. arsenal, were being shut down.

The security stand-down was an extraordinary step, the first of many, precipitated by an extraordinary event.

Intruders hid in the tall grass

In the pre-dawn darkness of Saturday, July 28, three peace-seeking protesters — including Sister Megan Rice, an 82-year-old Catholic nun — slipped into the nuclear installation without being detected. They crossed a boundary fence, ignoring the U.S. Department of Energy's warning signs, and scaled the heavily wooded Pine Ridge on Y-12's north side. Upon descending the ridge, they presumably could see much of the sprawling government plant, including their ultimate destination: the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility, which stands out at night like a white fortress with bright lights shining on it.

The intruders, who called themselves the Transform Now Plowshares, were wearing dark clothes and backpacks. In an interview, Rice said the three — the other faith-based pacifists were Michael Walli, 63, and Greg Boertje-Obed, 57, both military veterans — hid in tall grass as they watched a security patrol vehicle pass on two, maybe three, occasions before they crossed...

The Japanese have a reputation of being copy-cats.

Back in my misspent youth I had an assignment of reverse engineering memory chips, I was given samples from 6 manufacturers; 3 Japanese, and 3 domestic.

The memory cells of the 3 American chips were virtually identical.

The 3 Japanese chips each had a unique design.

Who’s a copy-cat?

It’s called the neutron bomb. The inventor was Sam Cohen.

From the article:

“What if the middle-of-the-night intruders in late July had been a group of armed-and-trained terrorists instead of a trio of pacifists bearing candles, flowers and the Holy Bible?”

Only Christians are enemies of the Feds, correct?

Absolutely!

We will probably see it in demonstration when Israel gets topped up with the muslim crap and lets it fly.

Someone already created the neutron bomb, demonstrating that there will still be radiation... but the largest concern is how do you have a maximum effect device without a nuclear blast and its resulting radiation?

A green bomb is consistent with modern warfare and technology. All wars have been fought over ideas and land. (And women) Who needs all that nasty, dirty, telltale residual radiation all over their new acquisition?

If anyone could think it up, it would be the jew. You have to remember, the Jews thought it up for Hitler, and finished it for America. AND that was near 70 years ago.
How many technology/knowledge cycles have occurred since then? If anyone can think it up its those with the most powerful brains, the jew.

AND the Iranians think they are clever for being in the nuclear club by buying 70 year old jewish technology. Any fool can buy technology.... old out dated technology.

While unlikely I would not rule out the possibility in entirety. I guess it would depend on the amount of U235 available, if there was lots and lots then maybe if you were really clever and brought lots of C4 and a few molds then maybe a low yeild explosion might be within reach. Hiroshima like yield? I seriously doubt that would be possible. But a kiloton or two can do a lot of damage too considering all the fallout such a blast would make.

I’m afraid we are going to have to credit the Germans for the discovery of fission, German chemists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann in 1938 to be more precise. And let not forget the great Italian Femmi for laying all the ground work or the French for madame Curie for her ground breaking work either.

Really? So knowledge in Mathematics doubles every six months? Solar technology is halving the cost every six months?

And then you toss in a ridiculous comment about Jews. You're clearly a freaking moron. Glad you put it on display for everyone to see.

Note that there is no information about punishment of any of the many DOE and Nuclear Security employees we pay, who are responsible for oversight of security at the Y-12 facility.

Whaddya think I am?

I believe you will be happier without an answer to that question which would be based on your comments to this particular thread.

The head Honcho in charge of security was replaced and at least one likely several guards fired as well. The security is a contractor which is a huge mistake in itself. They need to put the processing plants under the DOD and have a true federal guard force with powers specifically limited to their facility.

Every year the protesters show up and every year they get more and more courage up to go another step. The security teams need to go to back to a use of deadly force posture when as in this case four security perimeter fences were cut to gain access. BTW one of the clowns arrested was wearing a UN Blue helmet.

I'm about 15 miles or so as the crow flies from the plants. Security was somewhat tightened after 9/11 but there was no excuse for this laxness. BTW funding for security had been cut to the facility and there were/possibly still are plans for more security force reductions.

Go check your facts about the consumer electronic market and electronics technologies. Also, if you look back I believe I couched my words on the jews by saying per capita; they are the brainiest.

Go check the Nobel prizes they have obtained for the hard sciences.... for such a small percentage of the total global population. Then if you like, compare them to the number of muslims who have taken Nobel’s home. NO comparison. None. While we are comparing, Look at the Muslims ability to generate modern inventions useful to modern man. Ha! No comparison!

I’ll bet the jews ancestors were eating with golden cutlery while yours and mine were still eating with their hands!

PS...I’ll bet that total knowledge MORE than doubles every 6 months!

Man o man, a person can get into many issues with a general comment. The jews are not the only ones with brain utility nor license to use them.... but on a per capita basis, they are a brainy lot!

I agree, most of the greatest discoveries for the foundations of chemistry, physics and maths were by others.... mainly westerners. Actually, modern man is the terrain of western man with the common thread of Christianity.
