Romney rejected Condi as VP over abortion, marriage: report

TAMPA, August 31, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Mitt Romney vetted former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice as his vice presidential running mate, but turned her down because her pro-choice, pro-homosexual views would split the party, according to media reports.

“Condi was fully vetted to become Mitt Romney’s running mate,” an unnamed campaign source told RadarOnline.com. Romney thought Rice would add foreign policy expertise “and he knew she would help with the all important female vote and African American support.”

The problem? Condoleeza Rice describes herself as “mildly pro-choice,” favors some kind of legal recognition for homosexual unions, held a prominent post in the unpopular George W. Bush administration, backs Affirmative Action, and may have voted for Barack Obama in 2008.

“Mitt’s advisers talked him out of it, because Condi is pro-choice and she isn’t willing to change her position on the controversial issue,” the source said.

These advisers reportedly told the former Massachusetts governor “ultra conservative support” would “immediately be lost” if he chose Rice.

That proved to be good advice. After rumors surfaced that Rice had been vetted for veep, values voters sparked a rebellion.

Marjorie Dannenfelser of the Susan B. Anthony List called Rice “an unqualified candidate,” and Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council described her candidacy as “a non-starter.” Conservative activist Richard Viguerie encouraged his readers to call the Romney campaign to talk them out of offering Rice the number two spot.

Instead, Romney chose Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, a selection that left many pro-life leaders thrilled.

Rice still graced the platform at the Republican National Convention the same night as John McCain, the 2008 nominee who attempted to dilute the GOP’s pro-life plank four years ago.

The former Bush-41 adviser may still harbor political ambitions. According to the source, she is thinking seriously about running for governor of California, where Republicans often hold pro-abortion and pro-homosexual views.

I heard her on Hannity’s radio show and she said she was very happy being a professor at Stanford University. She may have been vetted for VP, but, I’m not positive. I’m glad she didn’t get the nod because a Sarah Palin she isn’t.

I for one have considered the election of Obama as historic, because of being the first non-white president. I did not vote for him or support him, but recognize the historic significance of his election just the same.

I hope Dr. Rice is in the same category, having recognized the historic nature of his election, but not having voted for him.

She supports affirmative action? Affirmative action by it’s very nature is racist.

Mitt seems to be trying to say he’ll be pro-life’s huckleberry this time around.

Those who know Mitt’s waffling history have cause to be leery about such promises, but that does not absolutely mean Mitt won’t follow through with them. It suggests that Mitt is malleable, which is something that the Marxist can’t be accused of. Most of America doesn’t want abortion policy to be as liberal as it is today. Even Mitt hears that.

How about your defending your comment and showing how you KNOW that Condi voted for Obama? Or does it just make you feel better to THINK she did and keep saying it as if you know she did?

And she lied about not being able to go to movies when she was growing up. I was born and raised in the South and blacks sat up in the balcony. I thought they had it better than I did because I wanted to throw popcorn on top of people’s heads.

“Mitt’s advisers talked him out of it, because Condi is pro-choice and she isn’t willing to change her position on the controversial issue,” the source said.

Frankly, I'd have less respect for her if she did change that to get on the ticket because I wouldn't know what else to believe about what she says (and I definitely wouldn't believe her on that subject, no matter how "nuanced".)

Very interesting. I think Condi's political career at the national level (and by this I mean an elected position) in the GOP would be hampered by two things: (1) her lifelong tenure in government and academia, and (2) her marital status.

For better or worse, these two are obstacles to any serious consideration for a position on a national Republican ticket.

How about her vote for Obama last time around?

Exactly. What is there to vet? How could either party run a VP candidate that voted four years ago to elect the person they are now trying to defeat? The fact that Romney had to be "talked out of it" is particularly troubling but not surprising.

] “Gay Rumours Eclipse Condi’s Glory Moment”, The Sunday Times (London), 2 December 2007. Quoting Anne Roifes, “It is widely believed in gay circles that Condi is a lesbian... that could be one reason she will not run [for Presidential nomination].” Also, “First Clinton, Now Condi... Murdoch Papers Go Lesbian Mad”, The First Post, 3 December 2007, mentioning reports that Rice as Provost at Stanford “was completely out as a lesbian and it was not a scandal, just a reality” and her purchase, with Randy Bean (an unmarried woman), of a house together. Ms. Bean stated that the property was an investment, not a cohabitation.

Give it up. Her blatant comments were clear. She voted for Obama because she’s a racist.

She’s also a RINO and was a pathetic Sec of State.

But how could he do that? I’m told over and over again on this website that Romney and Obama are exactly the same on the life issue. I’m sure for Obama, having a pro-death Vice President is an requirement.

I am guessing you did not read the excerpt. He was ready to go with her; his advisors talked him out of it (per the article).
