Obama campaign has an arena fallback plan in case of rain
By BYRON TAU | 9/3/12 8:35 AM EDT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — President Obama's campaign said Monday they would move his primetime address to the Democratic convention inside the Time Warner Cable Arena in downtown Charlotte in the event of rain.

"We're still hopeful that we can speak in the stadium," deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said on MSNBC's Daily Rundown.

"We always knew that this could be part of the plan," Cutter said. "We'll make a call sometime in the near future about whether to move it indoors."

I thought earlier reports said that the event would be in the stadium, rain or shine, and would be moved inside only in the case of severe weather.

I wonder if their confidence is shaken.

What is the seating capacity of the respective two venues, again?

Looks like they're playing it both ways:

On the upside, moving the speech indoors to the Time Warner arena solves the Obama campaign's problem of trying to fill a stadium with more than 70,000 seats.

UPDATE: DNC officials said at a Monday press conference that the event will go forward rain or shine, unless severe weather raises safety concerns.

Well then, let us pray for rain.

Let me ask a couple of common sense question. You mean they did not secure the proper venue "in case of rain"? And they are going to expect an entire set to be moved "in case of rain"? Tear down is a b!tch. Tearing down and moving it and then setting it up again will be a downright b!tch.

It don't matter nothin', Obama knows "the people" will do anything to help him move forward.

why do i think there is going to be a real mess....and no where near the crowd expected. I think there were 20,000 media people at the 2008 convention.

He's using Bubba as a pawn...but it might not work....People are just plain sick and tired of Obama, gays, losing money, no jobs, supporting bums, supporting union wages....etc, etc...

Time Warner Cable Arena offers the ultimate in flexible seating; from a 4,000 - 7,000 theater set up to more than 20,000 people for a collegiate basketball tournament. Maximum seating capacities are listed below: Sporting Events
•NBA Basketball: 19,026
•College Basketball: 20,200 (maximum)
•Hockey: 14,100

Concerts
•End stage 180 degrees: 13,736
•End stage 270 degrees: 15,236
•End stage 360 degrees: 18,249
•Center stage: 18,504
•Theatre: 4,000 – 7,000

BOA stadium is at least 70K.

If the DNC moves it to Time Warner, that is 50K +/- less RATS they have to come up with.

Who cares about Tuesday though. The entire convention will be inside at Time Warner arena. Only Obama is speaking outside on Thursday at BANK OF AMERICA stadium. It’s an outdoor stadium.

Awe, I was hoping to see 72,000+ running 10+ or so blocks to get in to the 10,000+ area as it is configured for the convention. It would make the running of the bulls look like a romp through the daisies.

Yeah, I remember reading that too, "No matter what, we'll be in the stadium."

Lucky for them, thunderstorms are forecast for Thurs night. So now they can say, "Always concerned about the attendees safety, we're moving the event to an inside location," conveniently forgetting to mention how much smaller and easy to fill the inside location will be.

And what of nobama's statue built from the finest sand Myrtle Beach, SC has to offer? Will it be left to melt in the downpour?

"Obama campaign has an arena fallback plan in case of rain"

They've booked the phone booth across the street from the stadium.

If the alternate is smaller, they’re hoping for rain.

If they find they aren't going to have enough zombies to fill the stadium, they will cancel for "rain" - even if it is only one hour out and the sky is perfectly clear.

No way are they going to play to a half empty stadium - which is what they are going to have. Look for the final Worship Service to be held at the Time Warner Arena. In fact, bet big money on it.
