Explains why the Dems first answered the “are you better off”’ with either “no” or dodged the question. They don’t want to appear out of touch.
They realized this looked horrible so word went out to say “yes we are better off” and a list of talking points why. But now they are subject to a long list of stats being tossed in their faces to show otherwise. They’ve now claimed ownership of the economy (first time!) and opened themselves out to be playing golf and saying things are great while millions suffer - exactly what Axelrod mentions here.
In substance...here...and here only....Axelrod is actually correct.
He merely says that GHW Bush couldn’t talk about being out of the recession “...from the 9th hole or from the cigar boat.”
Which is true. From the “optics” viewpoint, that is bad political juju.
Obama play more golf, but he never “talks about jobs” or whatever from the golf cart. That’d be political malpractice. For any president.

Given that President Obama plays so much golf and takes so many vacations, maybe that explains the empty chair.
