Rep. Yvette Clarke: The Dutch owned slaves in Brooklyn as recently as 1898 [VIDEO]

A Democratic congresswoman from Brooklyn appears to believe that slavery existed in her district until 1898.

Against the advice of her party’s leadership, Rep. Yvette Clarke appeared on “The Colbert Report” on Tuesday for one of host Stephen Colbert’s occasional “Better Know a District” segments. After getting in a few digs at Brooklyn, Colbert asked Clarke, who is currently serving her third term in the House, what she would say to her district if she could go back to 1898 in a time machine.

“Set me free!” Clarke said.

“From?” Colbert asked.

“Slavery.”

Trying to hold back his laughter, Colbert said he didn’t realize there was slavery in Brooklyn in 1898. “I believe there was,” Clarke responded.

It had been my thought that pockets of slavery probably did last beyond the Civil War. I thought that she might be addressing some issue that had slid in under the radar.

This is true. The Emancipation Proclamation did nothing to address the legal status of slaves in the northern states, of whom there were still remnants at the time of the civil war. Many of the northern states took a gradual approach to abolition, for example barring the sale or importation of slaves, but allowing existing slaves to be "grandfathered in," as it were. I do not know that any such existed as late as 1898, however.

Most people do not know that most of the states in the Northeast were slave states at one time. The only exception of which I am certain is Pennsylvania. Notable civil rights pioneer Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in the Hudson river valley of New York.

Hey, I’m human. If someone wants to write me off because I made a mistake, they’ll have plenty of excuses to over time.

I don’t mind owning up to them. I try not to goof up, but hey, it’s going to happen once in a while. When you do, you admit it, apologize, and move on.

Looks like we’re in good company, you and I. Thanks for the note.

Do you suppose the Dutch ever tipped over Guam?

Give the Dutch a break. Due to language barriers they probably didn't hear about the Civil War or Emancipation Proclamation until the early 1900’s.

So kind of like the Japanese soldiers holding out until the 1970’s on remote Philippians islands; the Dutch may have been holding slaves.

"Do you suppose the Dutch ever tipped over Guam?"

That's a question of ettiquette. I believe it's proper for everybody to tip a little when you go dutch.

I appreciate the note. It touched on some issues I hadn’t given thought to before. The ‘grandfathered in issue’ was one.

After reading your comments, I tried to Google ‘last known slave in the United States’. I ran into this article.

It’s an interesting article, if you’re going to believe all of it. I certainly can’t vouch for the veracity.

One interesting aspect, was the possible inception of ‘backsliding’, a religious term meant to reference a Christian who had slid back into sin. This article puts a new slant on that.

I had thought that grandfathered in people might easily live until the 1900s, only 35 years after new laws shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation.

At any rate, check this out. You may find it interesting.

The joy of gerrymandered districts by race. We get ignorant and historically illiterate unRepresentatives in rotten boroughs full of non-citizens.
The Dutch lost control of NY in July 1673. Slavery in NY State was slowly phased out in from the 1780s onwards, with slavery by birth ending in 1799. NY became a free state on July 4, 1827. I doubt anyone born a slave in NY was alive in 1898.
No wonder she voted for a healthcare bill no one read. Clarke hasn’t read anything.

“Some old lady turned to the woman next to her and, you could read her lips, asked “What’s outsourced mean?” And they get to vote.”

Actually, it’s a reasonable question. (Although the context might have made the meaning clearer.) “Outsourcing” refers to any contracting out of work — whether to foreign or domestic companies. Although, in context, the speaker probably was referring to outsourcing to foreign companies (I’m guessing). In that case, the more precise term would be “off-shoring”

Given that it was an “energy” guy, speaking (I assume) at the DNC convention, he could have been prevaricating. He could promise not to “outsource” — yet still “off-shore” the work to a foreign subsidiary. Maybe the old lady suspected energy guy of parsing words, and just wanted to nail down his promises.

Dem Dutchies are blue eyed devils. African American studies are a hoot if you’re a racist kook.

A woman named Christine Sommers wrote a book called “Not out of Africa” in which she examined nutty African American studies claims.

This Clown, Rep. Yvette Clarke wouldn't happen to be a surviving former slave, would she?
That would make her 145 years old.
Let's cut her some slack.

Expat1000, I think you’re right. I read about one of the other supposed leaders, and the guy is supposed to have brought 150,000 blacks with him to the area.

Oberon, be advised that it appears this was a bogus site. Disregard my link.

Thanks Expat1000.

You’re welcome. I had to look over much of the site and even followed a book ad to Amazon before I could be sure. Like I said, someone put really a lot of work into this - site, books, etc., and a lot of it is quite subtle, but there is simply too much that is over the top.

I suspect every religion has one nut job out there that has declared jihad on it. There’s one that has targeted my church, and the guy is obsessed with making sure everyone knows..., if you catch my drift. What folks wind up knowing is that this guy is way too fixated on the matter.

If you don’t like a church, move on. Quit altogether or find another one you like. Nobody is forcing you to stay and love it.

I try to be careful, but this one did slip in under the radar.

Thanks again for your help.

Little known piece of history: John Adams, second President of the US and firmly anti-slavery, was himself briefly a slave owner. He was given the “gift” of a young black woman. He “owned” her for only the length of time required to draw up her manumission papers.
