Recovery will require Depression-repairing level of effort, Obama tells national convention

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — His re-election in doubt, President Barack Obama conceded only halting progress Thursday night toward solving the nation’s economic woes, but vowed in a Democratic National Convention finale, “Our problems can be solved, our challenges can be met.”

“The path we offer may be harder, but it leads to a better place,” Obama said in advance excerpts of a prime-time speech to delegates and the nation.

The president’s speech was the final act of a pair of highly scripted national political conventions in as many weeks, and the opening salvo of a two-month drive toward Election Day that pits Obama against Republican rival Mitt Romney. The contest is close for the White House in a dreary season of economic struggle for millions.

With unemployment at 8.3 percent, Obama said the task of recovering from the economic disaster of 2008 is exceeded in American history only by the challenge Franklin Delano Roosevelt faced when he took office in the Great Depression in 1933.

“It will require common effort, shared responsibility and the kind of bold persistent experimentation” that FDR employed, Obama said.

In an appeal to independent voters who might be considering a vote for Romney, he added that those who carry on Roosevelt’s legacy “should remember that not every problem can be remedied with another government program or dictate from Washington.”

His campaign said the president would ask the country to rally around a “real achievable plan that will create jobs, expand opportunity and ensure an economy built to last.”

He added, “The truth is it will take more than a few years for us to solve challenges that have built up over a decade.”

Depression-repairing level of effort?

What happened to the “recovery”?

Solve problems which have built up over a decade? Then does he take responsibility for the four of the last 10 years during which he has been president? Is that really what he is saying???

LOL...if this sap thinks he can dislodge the welfare class from their sofas to go clean up national parks and build zoos and bridges as the folks of much better character did during the Great Depression, he will be flushing even more money down the toilet. Our dependent class won’t show up to work....and he’s already said it’s fine with him.

So Obama is going to start WWIII (or IV or V, depending on how you count...), and lay waste to the rest of the world, to get us out of the doldrums? After all, that is what got us out of The Great Depression.

If anything FDR’s programs prolonged the Depression.

Just don’t ask Him or us just HOW that is to be brought
about. We don’t know, you’ll have to elect him to find
out how he plans to do it, kinda like ObamaCare, you
remember that don’t you??

Oh, how precious! The ultimate government planner, dissing government planning. But what did he propose instead??? NOTHING!!!Too busy working up plans to nationalize whatever industry might "remedy" the problem, I suppose!

If he is going to propose a laundry list, it really begs the question, as to why he has not introduced these ideas during the last four years.

Whatever happened to recovery summer?

Are we still supposed to focus on jobs saved rather than focus on the unemployment rate?

Are we still supposed to blame problems on Bush, tsunamis, snowstorms, earthquakes, etc???

If Obama is going to try and channel FDR he is getting some very bad advice....the vast majority of voters do not have a clue what the great depression was like.... Or even know who FDR is...or what he did....

Even if he peeks some interest in FDR policies they might be in for a rude awakening....like stacking the court. Years upon years of ecomonic depression...it took a war to get the country moving again

Maybe he will claim he has polio too !!!

It sounds like “the chair” was informed that the unemployment numbers to be reported tomorrow, are awful. IMO, he wouldn’t be saying this if the numbers were going to be good.

It sounded better in the original russian.

Yes, FDR purposely prolonged the depression.

The longer he could hold back the private sector, the longer he had to increase Gov't power and ensure Democratic dole-votes.

FDR is Obama's hero, and Obama is trying to do the very same thing.

Hillary- “We will take things away from you for the common good”

Hillary was a bit more concise.
