Your Heart

September 8, 2012

I loved Malcom’s prayer at church the other day. Only 7 years old, he stood in front of 100 other kids and prayed: “Jesus, thank You that some of us get to play football and go to church, and for safety on the ride here, and for forgiveness of our sins, and for eternal life. We love You, Jesus. Please don’t ever forget how much we love You!”

It brought tears to my eyes as he expressed his heart to God. As adults, we may tend to try to polish our prayers a little, thinking that it will sound better to God’s ears or to those around us who might hear us. But I think God must delight in hearing just what’s on His child’s heart.

Nehemiah’s heart was filled with concern for the welfare of Jerusalem, his homeland, when he heard that the people were in great distress and that the wall around the city was broken down (Neh. 1:3). Wanting to do something, he talked to God about it. He praised God for who He is (v.5), requested forgiveness for sin (v.6), reminded Him of His promise (v.9), and asked for mercy from the king (v.11). God watched over Nehemiah and His people through the whole rebuilding process.

What is on your mind? Thanks or burdens? Whatever it is, your loving God wants to hear your heart.

So lift up your heart to the heavens;
There’s a loving and kind Father there
Who offers release and comfort and peace
In the silent communion of prayer. —Anon.
The highest form of prayer comes from the depths of a humble heart.

Read: Nehemiah 1

I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. —Nehemiah 1:4

Ezekiel 15-18

This week it’s time for Frederic Chopin: The Productive Years.

Chopin and the female French novelist George Sand spent their summers at her villa in Nohant and the rest of the year in Paris. George’s recollection of Chopin’s creative process is interesting.

---

Chopin is at the piano, quite oblivious of the fact that anyone is listening. He embarks on a sort of casual improvisation, then stops.

”'Go on, go on,” exclaims [Eugene} Delacroix. “That’s not the end.”

”It’s not even a beginning. Nothing will come, nothing but reflections, shadows, shapes that won't stay fixed. I’m trying to find the right color, but I can’t even get the form.”

”You won't find the one without the other,” says Delacroix, “and both will come together.”

”'What if I find nothing but moonlight?”

”Then you will have found the reflection of a reflection.”

The idea seems to please the divine artist. He begins again, without seeming to, so uncertain is the shape. Gradually quiet colors begin to show, corresponding to the suave modulations sounding in our ears. Suddenly the note of blue sings out, and the night is all around us, azure and transparent. Light clouds take on fantastic shapes and fill the sky. They gather about the moon which casts upon them great opalescent discs, and wakes the sleeping colors. We dream of a summer night, and sit there waiting for the song of the nightingale.

---

Pretentious? Yes. That lady sure could write up a storm! But it’s a good view into the mind of the composer.

In 1841, at age 31, Fred turned out a piece that is not deep, but is sheer fun. The format is eight bars and repeat, then eight new bars, lather, rinse, repeat. Despite the mechanical format, this tarantella is fun to listen to and to play. The tarantella is an Italian dance, but this tarantella has a distinct Polish flavor to it.

Chopin: Tarantelle in A-flat, Op. 43

Doing well. I ran out of popular songwriters, so I turned to classical composers. Keeps me busy, along with my Tea Party stuff.
