Frederic Chopin wrote an impromptu in 1842 that is one of his most enjoyable pieces, a perfect mix of the sunny and the contemplative.

Chopin: Impromptu #3 in G-flat, Op. 51

That’s a very nice old ‘56, glad to see it so well loved. Old wagons didn’t have that many fans other than woodies until the past decade or so, but I’ve always loved them. My folks kept Country Squires of various vintages in the garage right up to my high school years.

Not sure if there’s a musical theme tonight, but I encountered a YouTube from Nelly Furtado that was striking, accoustic performance, very different from the “official” version that got a fair amount of airplay. Sort of dark, the lyrics, but beautiful. The lighting and stage reinforce that.

In 1842 Frederic Chopin wrote his last ballade, which has just a taste of Schumann in it. It starts sweetly, but that’s just a facade. It turns dark, but thoughtful, and then Chopin writes a passage that sounds like a question being asked. The sun comes out in the middle, and the piece dances, repeating the opening passage in a different key. The darkness returns, while the piano sings operatically around the theme. It ends wildly as the chords of night fall.

Chopin: Ballade #4 in F minor, Op. 52

In 1842 Frederic Chopin wrote one of his best known pieces, turned into a popular song in 1944 titled “Til the End of Time”. The middle section contains some of his most difficult writing. Those repetitive octave combinations, intended to portray war drums, are hell on the wrist.

Chopin: Polonaise in A-flat, Op. 53 (“Heroic”)
