Ken Timmerman asks: Why does Van Hollen Refuse to Support Israel?
Timmerman for Congress ^ | Sept 7, 2012 | Ken Timmerman

Kensington, MD- September 7, 2012 – Rep. Chris Van Hollen, Jr. has refused to join a bi-partisan letter to the Israeli ambassador in Washington, aimed at reaffirming strong bi-partisan support for Israel in the wake of the confusion generated by the conflicting statements at the Democratic National Convention. Republican candidate Ken Timmerman released the following statement on Mr. Van Hollen’s refusal.

“As the Republican candidate for Maryland’s Eighth Congressional District, I am saddened and concerned that my opponent, Democrat Chris Van Hollen, Jr., has not joined me in reaffirming the U.S.-Israel security relationship.

“In a letter sent Wednesday (September 5) to Mr. Van Hollen, I invited him to co-sign a letter to Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, stating that we set aside partisan differences when it comes to America’s commitment to a strong Israel, our commitment to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and our commitment to maintain the designation of Hamas as a terrorist group until it renounces terrorism and recognizes Israel’s right to exist.

“My staff has been in touch with Mr. Van Hollen’s staff several times on this subject, and we asked for his input should he want to make changes to the joint letter. I regret that Mr. Van Hollen has refused to join me in this initiative.

“On Wednesday, Mr. Van Hollen’s Democratic Party performed an about-face regarding Israel. As an embarrassing afterthought, the DNC hurriedly changed its platform to reinsert language previously deleted to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. But the platform still makes no mention of Hamas or of Hezbollah. Indeed, the weak language eventually reinserted and these fatal omissions in the DNC platform lend themselves to dangerous misinterpretation by America’s enemies and Israel’s foes.

“I reached out to Mr. Van Hollen so that together we could do our part to ensure that our enemies make no mistake about America’s resolve to stand by Israel, united. I regret that he declined to join me in this initiative.”

Full Text of Letter to Ambassador Michael Oren

5 September, 2012

Ambassador Michael Oren

Embassy of Israel

Washington, DC

Dear Mr. Ambassador,

We write to you in unusual circumstances, as rumors fly of partisan divisions in Washington and of an endangered U.S.-Israel relationship, to give you our assurance that even political rivals can agree on their support for Israel and her capital, Jerusalem.

We would like to reaffirm to you our joint commitment, across party lines, to Israel’s security and to the U.S.-Israel security relationship.

We affirm our belief that Jerusalem is and must remain the undivided capital of Israel, and that the United States government must move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as required by U.S. law.

We affirm our support of robust U.S.-Israel defense cooperation to guarantee that Israel maintains its qualitative military edge over its neighbors. This includes our commitment to fully fund the Iron Dome missile defense system to protect Israeli citizens from the threat of terrorist rocket strikes.

We also write to affirm that we recognize Hamas as a terrorist entity, and that the United States with Europe should continue “to isolate Hamas until it renounces terrorism, recognizes Israel’s right to exist, and abides by past agreements,” as stated in the Democratic National Committee platform of 2008.

These statements are contained in the platforms of our respective parties, and form the basis for a strong U.S.-Israel strategic relationship.

We assure you, Mr. Ambassador, of our steadfast support for these principles.

Sincerely,

Chris Van Hollen, U.S. Representative

Ken Timmerman, Republican candidate

Maryland’s 8th Congressional District

End of Letter

Timmerman for Congress

Ken Timmerman is a nationally recognized investigative reporter who was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize
in 2006 along with John Bolton for the work he has done to expose Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

Ambassador Bolton and a team of our nation’s most senior national security officials have endorsed Ken in
Maryland’s new 8th District in his race to defeat the top Democrat spender in Congress, Rep. Chris Van Hollen.
Ken is also a witness to the persecuted church, and has written a book about the Christians of Iraq based on
recent trips to Mosul and Amman, Jordan.

For the past seven years, Ken has been the lead investigator for families of 9/11 victims in a civil lawsuit against Iran. Based on Ken’s evidence, a federal district judge ruled just before Christmas that Iran “shared responsibility” for the 9/11 terrorist attacks with al Qaeda, and had provided “direct, material support” for the attacks.

As former president of the Maryland Taxpayers Association,  Ken has been a strong advocate for Maryland citizens. He urged the adoption -- back in 2000 -- of a Return-the-Surplus- Amendment. Ken was also at the forefront of the Divest Terror movement along with Delegate Don George, to prevent Maryland pension funds from being invested in companies doing business with terrorists.

Actually, Timmerman has a better chance than one would think because the redistricting has brought in more Republicans—50.7% registered Democrats and 49.3% registered Republicans and Independents.

Also, Van Hollen’s support of J Street may also hurt him.

Thanks for filling me in on Ken Timmerman as a congressional candidate, of which I was not aware. I remember him as a writer, and IIRC, I once bought one of his books from the Conservative Book Club.
