Barack Obama, All In

"First shot, straight through, that's how you perform under pressure," Barack Obama said in 2008. They played the quote with a video clip of Obama making a basket at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday.

Obama knew how to make it look easy, even though it wasn't. When he spoke at the past two Democratic conventions, he was a challenger. "I'm no longer just a candidate," Obama declared. "I'm the president."

On the political front, Obama has some impressive victories. "Four years ago, I promised to end the war in Iraq. We did," Obama said. "I promised to refocus the war on the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11. We have. We've blunted the Taliban's momentum in Afghanistan, and in 2014, our longest war will be over."

Those are popular accomplishments. What impressed me Thursday night was that he didn't run away from his unpopular decisions.

I do not suggest that this speech proposed anything specific in terms of reforming the federal government or tax code -- the heavy lifting that lies ahead. The president gave lip service to deficit reduction but nothing more. His heart isn't into it.

Obama operatives frequently boast that the president is the guy who makes "tough choices." The campaign had hinted that the president would deliver a substantive speech with lots of specifics. Instead, the president offered up "goals" -- doubling U.S. exports over two years, halving oil imports by 2020, curbing the growth of college tuition -- that have as much force as a New Year's resolution.

And though the president argues that he wants more tax fairness, he doesn't sell his belief that raising taxes on high-income earners actually would spur the economic growth America needs.

But Obama truly did stick out his neck in defending his Affordable Care Act and social issues. He rightly said, "If the critics are right that I've made all my decisions based on polls, then I must not be very good at reading them."

The president stuck out his neck on gay rights. Some 30 states have banned same-sex marriage in their constitutions. Every time states have put a referendum on same-sex marriage on the ballot, voters have affirmed heterosexual marriage.

The people of the Tar Heel State voted against same-sex marriage by a 61-39 percent vote this year. North Carolina is one of 11 swing states. Obama won by 14,000 precious votes four years ago. Undaunted, the day after the state's same-sex marriage vote, Obama endorsed same-sex marriage.

On Thursday night, a young man named Jason Crow introduced himself to the Time Warner Cable Arena as "an Eagle Scout" who "was raised by ... two moms, Jackie and Terry."

Barack Obama is not backing down. He is not moving to the center. He is not going to reach across the aisle. He is not going to try to unite the country.

This convention was on fire because the Democratic base knows: One way or another, he's all in.

Obama's "Toughest Choice" so far has been whether or not to use the TOTUS on any given speaking engagement. Seconded by whether to use the number 2 or number 3 wood at the golf course.

Competent Presidents don't fight wars to end them, they fight wars to win them.

That war was already won before you usurped office, Skidplate.

Wrong, and lies.

Withdrawing from Iraq doesn't mean the war is over, just like withdrawal from Vietnam and Korea didn't end the war. And in case anyone didn't already know, the absurd ROEs imposed by democrats on our troops in AFG are getting more of our troops killed... and WE ARE LOSING. Obama has killed more soldiers, and bringing them home early doesn't mean THAT war is over, either.

And though the president argues that he wants more tax fairness, he doesn't sell his belief that raising taxes on high-income earners actually would spur the economic growth America needs.

This point should not be lost on everyone. We keep hearing from everyone on the left that the Romney/Ryan plan is to give tax breaks to millionaires. Obama, on the other hand, promises to raise taxes on people making over $250k.

At the debates, Romney should challenge Obama to explain how raising taxes on the top 1% will result in a better economy "for the middle class". Obama will have three choices.

1) He can tell the truth and say it won't; or

2) He can say the [supposed] increased tax receipts will allow the government to invest in education and infrastructure which would spur economic growth. This option wreaks of stimulus II which will lose him the election; or

3) He can say that as a result of the [supposed) increase in tax receipts, he could reduce the debt which will benefit the economy. If he admits that reducing the debt was an asset in spurring economic development, then he will have to admit that his entire presidency has been economic suppression because of the trillions in debt he has run up.

Pick your poison Mr. president. Please enlighten us with your economic wisdom. humminna, humminna, humminna...

“.....and Barack is toast on election day.....”

There’s a good chance for that. But please, folks, don’t sit back complacently and then wake up with regrets on Nov 7. We need to give it our all. Our lives and our futures depend on it. Our Founding Fathers pledged “our lives, our fortunes ans our sacred honor”. It will take nothing less today to restore our country.
Give what you can. Do what you can.

Exactly, what you said. If you thought The Won ("I won.") was arrogant in 2008, imagine what he will be like this November 7th, and for four more years. We can't let this megalomaniac win by default.

Uh, how many takes did they need to get a clip of 0bama sinking a basket.

If he were so confident of making one shot count, he would have sunk a shot live at the convention.

A trivial point, I know. But typical of Zippy, nonetheless.
