Rossi Gives Third-Party Test Results from Hot Cat [Cold Fusion]

Last night, Andrea Rossi read and explained the third party tests that were done in July on his hot cat technology. The results evince outputs that approach nuclear in their power density and peak output levels.

I'm presently attending the conference, so I'm not able to compose a report on this excellent E-Cat conference. That will come later. But for now, I thought you would like to see the video I shot last night.

The third party was Fabio Penon, a "nuclear engineering specialist." The entire report is available here. To start, they created an E-Cat reactor out of concentric cylinders -- basically one stainless steel can inside another, both open at one end. They put the nickel and hydrogen sources between the cans and sealed up the gap between the two cans, leaving a donut hole in the center of the smaller can. They fired up the E-Cat and used an IR camera focused on the donut hole to record the temperature.

In Rossi's talk he went into every detail of the paper, in English. Because of the multinational crowd, at short intervals we were treated to translations in both Italian (from Rossi) and German (from another translator). This made the presentation take over three hours, starting at 8 pm on Saturday night.

If you believe Rossi's results, we are at the equivalent of about 1959 in this History of Nuclear Energy. There's a military reactor in operation, and a commercial installation due before the end of the year. It's beyond a conceptual breakthrough, and on the cusp of a commercial breakthrough.

The technology is safe, reliable, fully scalable, reasonably cheap to install currently (about $1.5/installed watt), comparable to solar in operating costs (fuel costs are practically zero), and compatible with mass manufacturing. It requires no radioactive materials, generates no radioactive waste, exports no nuclear radiation, and exports EMR comparable to a microwave oven (for a 10 KW reactor).

The Stirling engine -- as well as the Tesla turbine were hot topics at the conference. Nicolas Chauvin, the entrepreneurial promoter of the LENR Car, was also at the conference, privately discussing various options for the using E-Cat in a car. The most likely option is something like a Tesla brand car, using the LENR to charge the batteries.

I'm not sure LENR and cars are quite compatible yet, but it will come. Right now, an E-Cat device runs continuously, always producing 10 KW of heat. With direct connection to a Stirling engine at 40% efficiency, this would provide less than 6 horsepower. Chevy Volt owners might be happy with this, but there aren't many of those. But continuously charging a battery at 4 KW would be very effective, and any excess power could presumably be uploaded to the grid when you're docked.

I'm concerned about the heat generation. Having a 6-10 KW continous heater in my garage in the summer in Phoenix would not be helpful, so an additional cost would be an air conditioner for the garage, presumably powered by the E-Cat output. Now it gets too complicated.

E-Cat has commercialized LENR, following a very cautious path. Since the first version only supplies hot water, they're marketing it for building heating purposes. Since industrial safety certification is far easier than certification for home use, they're only pursuing industrial applications at the present time. The next version, the Hot Cat, will productized over the next few months, opening up a larger range of industrial applications. When a lot of experience has been accumulated, they will create products for home use and pursue home-use certification.

I took a look at his report. He talks a lot about the temperatures reached, but I didn’t see anything about net energy output.

For all the Rossi "Razzle-Dazzle", all that really came out of this dog & pony show was:

• Rossi claims to have some sort of partial safety certification from SGS. No evidence of such was presented. Note that Rossi has been caught several times lying about his association with other, credible organizations (University of Bologna and National Instruments are the prime examples).
• Rossi had a researcher determine that there was no radiation coming from his device. Note that his claim about how it works requires that it produce gamma rays. Rossi is currently trying to convince his investors that the E-Cat is "safe", but he is contradicting his own claims about how it works to do so.
• Although Rossi claims that his "Megawatt E-Cat" is available for purchase, there have been several reports from people trying to buy one that Rossi isn't willing to sell them one.

It's becoming more and more clear that this is nothing but an investor scam.

Interesting that the writer of that article is Mats Lewan, the guy who has been uncritically publishing stories on Rossi for well over a year.

Rossi no longer believes that the fundamental mechanism is transmutation of nickel into copper. Although small amounts of copper have been found, Rossi now believes that that may be a side-effect of the gamma rays that are produced in the reaction. After Rossi mentioned that the process generates 150 kEV radiation, an audience member (presumably a physicist) mentioned that this was evidence of hydrogen fusion into helium. Rossi didn't confirm the hypothesis, except to say that "it made sense".

Maybe it makes sense because when they analyzed his 'ash' from a running E-cat, the elements were in the same proportions as in nature.

Rossi was bragging about having two factories manufacturing the original E-cat to be sold to home users via Home Depot I think, what happened to that? If you follow Rossi's history, he's got factories all over the place. He said he had one of his factories had been heated by an E-cat for two years, where's the factory and that E-cat?

A satisfied military customer has been running a 1-megawatt E-Cat for months, with continuous production of heat energy and no failures. The 1-megawatt E-Cat has been safety certified for industrial applications.

Is this the infamous Big Blue Box that was supposedly working and delivered last year yet when people go to his 'lab', there it sits. I wonder if it's still there.

While I think LENR or LANR is real, I don't think Rossi is.

I pinged Kevmo and WW to get their input. It is odd to see a Rossi article not posted by Kevmo.

Sterling Allan of PESN believes anything literally and is quite the kook.

Actually, even Sterling Allan has distanced himself from Rossi. After Rossi was caught telling Florida authorities that there was no E-Cat factory, and that the E-Cat didn't generate any radiation (the opposite of what he was publicly stating at the time), Allan decided that Rossi was too untrustworthy to continue supporting.

I’ve got a better electronics lab than he has and I’m just a working stiff.

Working on a supposed nuclear power source and what does he have? A cheap multimeter. They even mentioned it in the article above. I guess he couldn’t afford a true RMS meter like a Fluke 87.
