Connecticut's Linda McMahon has Democrats nervous about losing another blue-state Senate seat.
Connecticut might be the last place you'd expect Republicans to pick up a U.S. Senate seat this November, but it may happen. In the race for retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman's seat, Linda McMahon, the co-founder of the highly profitable World Wrestling Entertainment, leads Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy by three points, according to the latest Quinnipiac poll.
Those numbers terrify Democrats, so much so that at the party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., this week they frantically shuttled Mr. Murphy around town to meet deep-pocket Democratic donors.
Connecticut hasn't had a Republican senator in modern times—with the exception of Lowell Weicker, who was so liberal that the Democratic Mr. Lieberman unseated him in 1988 by running to his right. Barack Obama carried the state by 23 points in 2008.
But Nutmeg State voters today are cranky, and even Mr. Obama is up only seven points on Mitt Romney in the latest Quinnipiac poll. One reason for their angst is tax-happy Gov. Dannel Malloy, who has raised income, sales and 70 other taxes and fees while insisting that taxpayers would be glad to pay the higher charges. They haven't been—in part because the budget remains steeped in red ink and the unemployment rate remains persistently above the national average. Barron's recently rated Connecticut the worst-run state in the country.
This is where Linda McMahon enters the arena, for a second time. The 64-year-old grandmother, who revived professional wrestling as a cultural phenomenon in the 1990s, ran for the Senate in 2010. She spent $50 million of her own money but got blitzed by well known state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.

Connecticut (the insurance capital of the nation) voting for Obama (who all but promises to put the health insurance industry out of business) is good stuff. Future historians will have to sift through the rubble and wonder what was in the drinking water.

Well, that’s exactly what she’s trying to do a second time.
But this time she may win, because Chris Murphy is a poor candidate. If she -does- win, it won’t be by any large margin (see next paragraph).
In any case I don’t expect Romney to win here (and I’ve been a CT resident for 62 years). He may generate a modestly respectable showing, but Obama will win here, probably with 53-54% of the vote, at least.
I would enjoy being proven wrong, but that’s how I see it.
Connecticut is mostly the dividend-collecting and hedge fund capital. About 9% of the households have an income over $500K.
Central MA is strongly Republican. Not one Obama sign to be found anywhere.
And yet, there are those who would not care if Brown lost because he is not pure. Disgusting.
I was quite impressed with Linda McMahon when she ran in 2010. I don’t agree with her on everything, but she comes across as a smart, capable individual to me. I’d love to see her win in CT.
Mrs. McMahon has an office next to ours. I’ve met her and a couple of her staff frequently in the hallways. FWIW, they come across as good people. Husband seemed OK the one time I ran into him, too.
I know this isn’t 1980 demographically speaking, but nobody except maybe the Gipper himself thought the Gipper was going to carry Massachusetts in 1980.
Another example was Bob Smith running for Senate in NH in 1996. Dan Blather and other main stream media Democrat running dogs called the race early on election night for his opponent, Democrat Dick Swett (yes, that is his real name). Smith won the race by 15,000 votes due to heavy turnout in small very Republican northern NH towns. Could Romney “steal” Connecticut? I agree it is highly unlikely—but Obama also carried Indiana in ‘08.

Insane of them to vote Democrats. Nothing is more demented than rich limousine liberals. Other folks have an excuse for falling prey to the lies of the Democrats. What’s their excuse? Guilt?!?

There's an undercurrent that the polls aren't reflecting. The "rank and file" aren't pleased with the status quo.
In the northeast, I'm usually happy with anyone other than a rat. Collins and Snowe were the exceptions. I won't miss Snowe. The Tea Party did very well in Maine in 2010. We'll see how Angus King does as an independent in November.
