President Obama to Bob Woodward: 'Mistake' to Dress Down Paul Ryan to His Face in Budget Speech
ABC News ^ | Sept. 10, 2012 | RICK KLEIN

President Obama told author Bob Woodward that he didn't know Rep. Paul Ryan was going to attend at a major speech he delivered last year on spending and debt, and says in retrospect that it was "a mistake" to dress down Ryan and his budget plans to his face in that setting.

"I'll go ahead and say it – I think that I was not aware when I gave that speech that Jack Ryan was going to be sitting right there,"

-SNIP-

"I do think that they felt like we were trying to embarrass him," Obama continued. "We made a mistake."

(Jack Ryan is the name of a famous Tom Clancy character,

Last April, shortly after Paul Ryan released his budget proposal, "The Path to Prosperity," Obama chose to get more specific about his budget goals in a speech at George Washington University in Washington.

But as Ryan and two GOP House colleagues settled into their seats, barely 25 feet from the president, they were in for a shock. The president lit into the Ryan budget plan, saying it was "less about reducing the deficit than it is about changing the basic social compact in America."

Woodward writes that the "spotlights in his eyes" prevented the president from immediately noticing that Ryan was in the audience, though he was seated in the front row.

Ryan thought it was a planned attack, and he was incensed. Ryan rushed out of the room even as Gene Sperling, a top Obama economic aide, tried to stop him to explain that the speech "wasn't a setup," Woodward writes.

"I can't believe you poisoned the well like that," Ryan told him.

spotlight. right.

Bush’s fault.

/snark

I’m actually quite surprised that he used the word “mistake” in the same sentence with “I.” This must have gone over badly with a focus group or something, necessitating the quasi-apology.

And if “Seven of Nine” Jeri Ryan had been a little more “liberal”, they might have had to use other means to perpetrate the greatest hoax ever on America.

FUBO, as always!

Ryan should have cold-cocked that snot-nosed wimp, Sperling. These people should NEVER be given power. They only abuse it.

Forces friendly to Obama accessed his supposed-to-be-sealed divorce records .....

David Axelrod dug them out by squeezing/greasing a courthouse employee and sent them over to the Chicago newspapers, which splattered them all over the gutter.

The office at stake was the U.S. Senator seat eventually contested by former ambassador Alan Keyes.

He didn’t even know who Paul Ryan was. But what do you want to bet that he knows the name/face of every NBA player who averages at least 10 pts/game? We all have our priorities.

I don’t know. Probably. It sure makes Obama look like a stupid bully, and not a very effective one at that.

Right! I wonder if “O” is still signing things with the 2008 date.

Totally clueless!

... they might have had to use other means to perpetrate the greatest hoax ever on America.

Actually, recent threads on FR (still current) are persuading me that Obama was coming anyway -- he was a "project" of the Democratic Party, a hothouse candidate groomed for years since Vernon Jordan ran him around Clintonista dinner-parties in 2001 and 2002.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., was one of the perps; Dick Durbin was another; and Tom Daschle, yet another. Many hands handed him along to the nomination, and prepared the ground for his illegitimate candidacy by tweaking U.S. law "as if" to make a pretended cure of his constitutional ineligibility: it's claimed that the Democratic leadership were the ones behind McCain's eligibility "cure" back in 2006-7 because they were actually preparing the ground for Obama.

Obama is a liar, a damn fool, arrogant beyond belief.

He doesn’t realize that winning a second term will be the biggest mistake in his life. His power will do him in.

And I think a Russian “firm” was hired to make the paper trail and see it all work, and thus their lightspeed “expulsion” from America before any of whichever good guys are left here could figure out what happened.

I think it was good ol’ fashion Chicago thug politics. He and his minions forced out a long-time serving woman in the IL State Senate. Then Øbama portrayed it as an ‘opportunity to serve’

Hmmm Lets see Jack Ryan (if memory serves) Becomes Vice President then when there is a State of the Union Speech a Japaneese Business man flies his plane into the Capitol Building wiping out Congress the President the Supreme Court and the Cabinet (Ryan survives because he wasn't in the room when the plane hit.)

He then becomes President and sets about to replace the Government with normal people instead of worthless politicians by appealing to the public to appoint and vote for people worthy for the job instead of party hacks.

Hmmmm... interesting.... very interesting...

Obama is a complete, stinking moron! He has been propped up by every left-wing sycophant out there! The man can’t give a speech without a teleprompter, and I have no doubt he doesn’t care about anyone or anything except barry. I cannot believe that so many Americans were fooled and still are fooled by this stupid marxist clown!

O’Bastard decided that rather than flip future VP Ryan off, he would diss him by intentionally getting his name wrong.

What Barack means is that he was unprepared to have his lies blow up in his face as PAUL Ryan “dressed HIM down, for misrepresenting the facts.

By the way, Obama is the one who INVITED Ryan!

My favorite part of that book is how Ryan talks a “Wall Street Fat Cat” (who doesn’t want the job) into taking over Treasury, and the two of them make re-writing the tax code their domestic priority. And it works.

Not exactly the sort of thing you find in your typical spy novel.

BTW, I worked in the WTC and as soon as I read that book (which came out 3 years after the first WTC attack), I wondered when the Islamonihilists would get around to trying the “Planes Operation.” I remember sitting with friends at the outdoor bar at the World Financial Center in August 2001 and discussing whether the buildings were tall enough to fall on us at that location WHEN they finally got knocked down. All of us thought there was an SAM battery somewhere in the neighborhood with that scenario in mind.
